Google Discover is a personalized, query-free feed. Google says it selects recommendations using information from your device and other Google products, along with Google Account data and settings you can change. Saved activity, interactions with Discover stories, device context and location-related signals may all contribute. Your follows, likes, dislikes and hidden topics can reshape the feed, while publishers must satisfy Discover and Search policies before their pages are eligible. Google does not publish the complete ranking formula or the exact reason a particular story appeared for one person.

What Google Discover is—and what it is not

Discover is the stream of article and video recommendations that appears without a search query. You can encounter it in the Google app, on mobile Google.com and, on some devices, through a home-screen feed. Availability varies by country, language and device. Google describes the feature as a way to receive updates about interests rather than as a conventional list of search results. Its help documentation calls the process “How Google decides what to show you in Discover.”

That distinction matters. Search generally starts with words you enter; Discover starts with a prediction about what may be useful or interesting to you now. The prediction is personalized, so two people opening Discover at the same time can receive different cards. A story is not guaranteed to appear simply because it ranks well for a search query, and appearing in Discover is not a statement that Google has endorsed the story.

Google’s public explanation identifies categories of information and user controls, not a reproducible scoring recipe. The official overview is available in Google’s Discover help documentation.

Which signals Google says Discover can use

Google names broad inputs rather than assigning a public weight to each one. The presence of a signal in the documentation does not mean it is used for every person or every card. Settings, consent, regional availability and the information associated with an account all affect what can be available.

Device and other Google-product information

Google says Discover can use information from your device and from other Google products. This category can include the apps and contacts associated with a device, as well as context held by Google services. It is best understood as background that helps Google interpret your interests and circumstances, not as a guarantee that a particular app, contact or device field caused a recommendation.

Account data, history and personalization settings

Data stored in your Google Account can influence recommendations according to the settings you have enabled. Google gives examples including Search Services History, personalized recommendations and activity saved through Google services. A separate explanation of activity-based personalization says recommendations, including Discover web pages, may reflect searches you have saved, Search results or ads you clicked, and Discover content you marked as liked or disliked. The documentation is explicit about these examples but does not say how much influence any one action receives.

Google’s broader Personalized Recommendations guidance describes possible account information such as profile details, saved likes and preferences, activity on Google sites and apps, and an associated general location. That page is useful context for understanding recommendation settings; it is not a published Discover ranking equation. Language and localization can also make results differ even when personalization is similar.

Location-related information

Location can provide geographic context for recommendations. Google says Discover may use a home location, or estimate a location from another source such as an IP address when a home location is unavailable. Its documentation connects Location History to Discover when Web & App Activity is turned on. These statements describe possible inputs, not continuous, precise tracking of every card impression. Location settings and account choices determine what information is available.

Your feedback and reading behavior

Discover can learn from direct feedback: following a topic, liking a story, disliking a story, hiding a topic or hiding a source. Google also documents activity-based recommendations that use interactions with Search and Discover content. A like is therefore a useful preference signal, but it is not a promise that the same publisher or subject will dominate your next feed.

Signal category Examples Google identifies What the documentation does not establish
Device and product context Information from your device and other Google products; app and contact information associated with devices A universal list of fields used for every user or card
Account and activity Search Services History, saved searches, clicked Search results or ads, personalized recommendations The weight of a search, click or account setting in ranking
Discover feedback Stories you like or dislike; topics or sources you follow or hide How long a feedback signal remains influential
Location Home location, estimated location such as an IP address, and Location History in the stated settings The exact geographic precision or role for an individual recommendation

How a story can move from the web into your feed

Google does not publish a step-by-step ranking pipeline, so the following is a careful way to read its documentation rather than a secret formula.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Content must first be eligible. A page has to comply with applicable Search policies, spam policies and Discover-specific policies. Violations can lead to removal from Discover, regardless of a person’s interests.
  2. Google identifies potential relevance. Information associated with your account, device, prior activity, feedback and location can provide signals about subjects that may interest you.
  3. Personalization settings and feedback refine the pool. Topics you follow, stories you like and sources or subjects you hide can change which candidates are useful to you. Turning personalized recommendations off changes the role of account-based personalization, subject to the controls Google currently provides.
  4. Google presents recommendations in the available interface. The final card can differ by country, language, device and account state. Google does not disclose the complete ordering logic or a deterministic explanation for an individual impression.

This model explains why “eligible” and “shown to me” are different outcomes. Policy compliance is a gate concerning whether content may appear; personalization concerns which eligible material is more relevant to a particular person.

How to change what appears in Discover

Google documents several controls, although labels and menu locations can change and some controls are unavailable in certain languages or regions. Use the control offered next to a card or in your Discover settings, then check the result over time rather than expecting an instant, permanent reset.

Follow or unfollow topics

Following tells Discover that a subject is of continuing interest. Unfollowing removes that explicit preference. This is useful for broad areas such as a sport, technology category or public event, but it does not guarantee that every card about the topic will appear.

Like or dislike stories

A like supplies positive feedback; a dislike supplies negative feedback. Use these controls when the subject, format or source is not a good fit. Google’s activity-personalization documentation includes liked and disliked Discover content among possible recommendation inputs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hide a topic or source

If you do not want a subject or publisher in the feed, use the corresponding hide option when it is offered. Hiding a source is narrower than hiding a topic: one suppresses a publisher, while the other addresses the subject itself. Availability and wording can differ by interface.

Manage interests and personalized recommendations

Google provides an interests-management area and a setting to turn personalized recommendations off. Turning personalization off can reduce account-based tailoring, but it does not imply that every contextual or regional difference disappears. Review the current options in Google’s Discover help page because menu paths and feature availability are updated.

Why two people can see different stories

Different feeds are an expected consequence of Discover’s design. One person may have a different Search history, different likes, a different set of followed topics or hidden sources, or different recommendation settings. Device information, language, country and general location can also differ. Google’s personalization guidance specifically notes that language and localization can change results for reasons beyond a person’s interest profile.

A shared household device does not create a single universal feed either: the signed-in account and its settings matter. Conversely, signing out or changing personalization settings does not give you a published way to predict every card, because Google has not disclosed the full candidate set, ranking weights or timing rules.

What publishers must do to be eligible

Discover applies applicable Search policies as well as feature-specific rules. Eligibility is a compliance requirement, not a traffic guarantee. Google can remove content that violates the policies, and repeated or serious violations may affect eligibility.

Policy area Google’s expectation Practical implication for a publisher
Preview accuracy Do not use preview text that misleads readers about what the page contains Make the headline, image and excerpt accurately represent the article
Advertising and paid promotion Advertising and paid promotion should not exceed the editorial content Keep commercial material from overwhelming the information a reader came to receive
Sponsorship disclosure Disclose sponsorship, including affiliate interests, clearly Label commercial relationships where readers can see the disclosure
Dates and authorship Provide clear dates and bylines Show when the piece was published or updated and identify its author
Publisher transparency Explain the author, publication and publisher, the company or network behind the site, and provide contact information Maintain an accessible About or contact path and clear ownership details
Search and spam compliance Follow overall Search policies, spam policies and Discover-specific policies Review the complete policy set, not only the headline or image rules

The complete requirements are in Google’s Discover content policies. Meeting them makes content eligible under the stated rules; it does not promise placement, a particular position or a fixed number of impressions.

What Google has not revealed

No public signal weights

Google’s help pages do not say that location outweighs Search history, that a like lasts a specified number of days, or that a followed topic receives a fixed boost. Any article claiming exact percentages or a universal hierarchy would be going beyond these official explanations unless it cites separate, credible evidence.

No guaranteed trigger for an individual card

You cannot reliably infer that one search, one visit or one location change caused a particular story to appear. The documented signals are possibilities used in combination, and Google does not expose a per-card explanation that assigns causation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No promise that policy compliance produces reach

Transparency, accurate previews and policy compliance address eligibility and removal. They do not guarantee inclusion, frequency or ranking. Editorial quality and audience interest may matter in practice, but the reviewed Google documentation does not publish a formula that converts those factors into a guaranteed Discover outcome.

A practical way to troubleshoot an unwanted feed

  1. Identify the problem precisely. Decide whether the issue is a topic, a particular source, too much repetition, or unwanted personalization.
  2. Use the narrowest feedback control. Hide a source when the publisher is the problem; hide or mark a topic as not interesting when the subject is the problem; dislike an individual story when it is a one-off mismatch.
  3. Review followed topics and interests. Unfollow subjects you no longer want and remove stale preferences where Google provides that option.
  4. Check recommendation settings. If you do not want account-based tailoring, review the Personalized recommendations control. Read the current wording because availability and paths vary.
  5. Allow for regional and interface differences. Changes may not produce an identical feed immediately, and some controls differ by language, country or device.

For privacy decisions, read the setting’s current description rather than assuming that disabling one history type disables every possible signal. Google’s documentation separates account activity, device information, recommendations and location-related settings, so each control can have a different scope.

The clearest answer to “why did I see this?”

The most accurate answer is usually: Google considered the story eligible, then used some combination of your account and activity settings, device and Google-product context, Discover feedback, language or location-related information to decide that it might interest you. You can influence those inputs, but neither readers nor publishers have a public, exact recipe for reconstructing one impression. Treat Discover as adaptive recommendations—not a transparent list with a single explainable ranking score.
