Your AI-detecting skills are strongest when you treat a detector result as a clue, not proof. Automated tools estimate whether text resembles patterns in their data; they can miss AI-written passages and flag human writing. Sound judgment means checking what a specific tool covers, then considering the writing process and other evidence before drawing a conclusion.

What an AI detector score means

A detector classifies text according to patterns its system has learned or evaluated. A result is therefore an estimate about the text, not a record of who wrote it. A high score does not establish that a person used AI, and a low score does not establish that they did not.

Scores also have product-specific meanings. Turnitin, for example, describes its report percentage as the share of qualifying text it identified as likely AI-generated or likely AI-generated and modified by an AI paraphrasing tool. It is not a percentage of sentences proven to have been written by AI. See Turnitin’s guidance on using the AI Writing Report.

Why detection is fallible

False positives occur when a tool labels human-written text as likely AI-generated; false negatives occur when AI-written text is not flagged. In 2023, OpenAI reported that its classifier identified 26% of AI-written items in its English challenge set as likely AI-written and incorrectly flagged 9% of human-written items. OpenAI discontinued that classifier on July 20, 2023, citing its low accuracy. Those figures apply to that classifier and evaluation—not to all current detectors. OpenAI’s classifier notice includes the results and limitation.

A peer-reviewed 2023 evaluation of 14 tools found false-positive probabilities from 0% for Turnitin to 50% for GPTZero under the study’s test conditions. That historical result is not a current product ranking or a universal error rate. It illustrates why accuracy claims need to be read alongside the tested text, language, models, and evaluation method. The study by Weber-Wulff and colleagues reports its methodology and findings.

What changes a detector’s usefulness

Language, genre, and length

A result is meaningful only within the tool’s supported scope. Turnitin says its model does not reliably handle non-prose such as poetry, scripts, or code, nor short or unconventional material such as bullet points, tables, and annotated bibliographies. Language and model coverage are also specific to the product’s documentation. Check the relevant Turnitin model documentation rather than assuming a tool works equally well across formats and languages.

Editing and evaluation conditions

Language, genre, length, the model that generated the text, and whether it has been edited, translated, or paraphrased can all affect results. A vendor’s documentation can clarify how its score is defined and what it claims to support; it does not independently prove real-world accuracy. Independent studies offer a separate check, but their findings remain bounded by their samples and test conditions. Tool versions and generative models also change, so older benchmark results should not be treated as a live comparison.

How to assess a detector result

  1. Identify the exact tool and report. Record the product and version, the date, and the report’s definition of its percentage or label.
  2. Check coverage. Confirm that the text’s language, format, length, and relevant model or editing conditions fall within the tool’s stated scope.
  3. Ask what the evaluation measured. Look for false-positive and false-negative rates and for details about the test population, genre, language, and editing conditions. Do not compare displayed percentages as though different products measured the same thing.
  4. Scale your response to the stakes. For low-stakes review, a result may prompt a closer look. For a consequential decision, it needs independent corroboration and must be considered under the relevant school, workplace, or publisher policy.

What to do when authorship matters

Use process evidence as context rather than as a second automatic verdict. If available, review successive drafts or version history, and ask neutral questions about the writer’s choices and process. A difference from previous work may be worth discussing, but a stylistic change by itself does not prove AI use. OpenAI’s educator guidance advises accounting for false positives and not treating detector output as definitive.

Do not ask ChatGPT to authenticate a passage. OpenAI says ChatGPT cannot reliably identify whether it generated particular text, so its answer is not independent evidence of authorship. See OpenAI’s explanation.
