Gears of War: E-Day changes the enemy comparison by making familiar Locust feel newly frightening: it is set 14 years before the original Gears of War, during the first emergence on Sera. The Coalition’s stated aim is to show the invasion as Marcus, Dom, and the people of Sera first experience it—not as a war against foes players already know. Its official gameplay descriptions give returning enemy types distinct tactical roles, while one reviewer’s early hands-on assessment finds the smaller enemies more reactive than the biggest ones.
Why E-Day changes the point of view
In the established Gears setting, the Locust are part of a long war. E-Day rewinds to its beginning, 14 years before the original game, and centers on the first Locust emergence. Xbox Wire describes the design goal as presenting the enemy through the perspective of people encountering the threat for the first time. Creative director Matt Searcy put it this way: “Locust are the ‘monsters under the bed.’” The aim is not simply to show familiar enemies earlier in the timeline; it is to make their arrival feel like a terrifying discovery. That distinction matters when comparing the games. The available developer comments explain E-Day’s intent, but do not provide an equivalent, title-by-title account of how every previous game designed its Locust. The comparison is therefore strongest when focused on the specific changes and roles the developers describe, rather than treating all earlier enemies as interchangeable.
The Drone is being repositioned as a threat
The clearest stated contrast concerns the Drone. Art director Aryan Hanbeck says the enemy had gradually become “mere cannon fodder” as the series progressed. For E-Day, the team set out to make it fearsome, physically intimidating, and brutal. That is the developers’ description of their design intention, not an independent measurement of how Drones function in every earlier game. (Xbox Wire, June 9, 2024)

The official gameplay update describes multiple Drone varieties, including elite units with tougher tactics and loadouts that can work together in formidable squads. This suggests a deliberate effort to make Drones matter through both their individual presence and how they operate in a group, rather than relying only on their appearance. These are developer descriptions of the game’s mechanics, not independent testing. (Gears of War official site, July 31, 2026)
Returning enemies have different combat jobs
E-Day rebuilds recognizable Locust types around varied behaviors and battlefield functions. The official update describes the following roles:

- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
| Enemy | Described behavior in E-Day | What it asks of the player |
|---|---|---|
| Wretches | Armored Wretches can scream to disorient players and limit their actions. The developers also describe the opening Wretches as unarmored, unlike the version players normally encounter in Gears games. | Deal with a disruptive close-range threat, while the unarmored opening appearance helps establish the Locust as a new and unfamiliar danger. |
| Drones | They come in multiple varieties; elite units use tougher tactics and loadouts and can combine into squads. | Respond to different unit types and the pressure created by enemies working together. |
| Seeders | They launch anti-air Nemacysts and act as mini-bosses. Players must approach and draw them out to expose their weak heads. | Use positioning and timing to create an opening rather than simply firing at a concealed target. |
| Boomers | They are described as larger and more durable. A coordinated, well-timed chainsaw execution can shorten a fight when a Boomer is low on health. | Manage a durable opponent and look for the right moment to commit to a close-range execution. |
| Reavers | They can carry Drone troops or fight as walking tanks, leaping, clinging to high walls, and attacking from above. | Account for threats that can arrive with reinforcements or attack from elevated positions. |
The descriptions come from the developer’s July 2026 gameplay update; they establish intended mechanics, not independently verified performance. The update also mentions additional creatures from the Hollow without detailing their behaviors. (Gears of War official site, July 31, 2026)

First encounters and escalation shape the campaign
The opening sequence is designed to make the Locust feel like a discovery. In a June 2026 Xbox Wire interview, Searcy explains that the first Wretches are unarmored, unlike the Wretches players normally see in Gears games. He describes the progression from those first enemies to Drones and their weapons as a process of learning what the invasion is. That makes the altered Wretches part of the story’s perspective as well as a combat distinction. (Xbox Wire, June 9, 2026)

Encounters are also framed as combinations, not just isolated enemy showcases. The official gameplay update says battlefield layout, weapon choice, enemy combinations, and player skill together define a fight. The June 2026 interview describes escalation from early Wretch and Drone encounters toward Brumaks in armor and the wider invasion. In practical terms, the design aims to move from local moments of confusion and danger toward a battlefield that feels part of a larger attack. The sources establish that progression as developer intent; they do not offer a systematic comparison of encounter pacing across every earlier Gears title. What an early review says about enemy reactions
Windows Central’s review-in-progress offers an independent counterpoint to the official design goals. The reviewer praises Drones, Wretches, and other early enemies for reacting to bullets and having destructible armor, which can make exchanges feel more responsive. The same review says Reavers, Brumaks, and other large enemies react less to gunfire and can feel like bullet sponges. That is one reviewer’s assessment of a review still in progress, not a definitive verdict on the finished game or a series-wide comparison. (Windows Central, accessed October 7, 2026)

How the comparison adds up
E-Day’s clearest difference is its first-contact perspective: the Locust are meant to be terrifying strangers rather than merely familiar opponents in a continuing war. The Drone is an explicit redesign priority, while Wretches, Seeders, Boomers, and Reavers are described with distinct ways to disrupt, challenge, or reshape a fight. Early independent impressions support the value of reactive smaller enemies but point to a possible weakness in how large foes respond to damage. The evidence supports that focused comparison—not a definitive ranking of enemy design across the entire franchise.
