There is no universal Game of the Year cutoff. Each award sets its own release window, qualifying market, entry rules, and voting process, so the same game can qualify for one award cycle and miss another. Check the named award’s current rules—not just the game’s launch date or the ceremony date.

How does a game qualify for Game of the Year?

Eligibility is determined by the rules for a specific award and cycle. The key questions are when and where the game became publicly available, what kinds of releases count, whether someone must submit it, and which category’s rules apply. A ceremony held in 2027, for example, may consider games released in a period that began in 2025, or games released during the prior calendar year.

Release eligibility is also distinct from an entry deadline. A deadline tells publishers or developers when to submit; it does not necessarily define the release window. A nomination date or ceremony date is not a substitute for the cutoff in the rulebook.

What is the cutoff date for major Game of the Year awards?

The current cycles described below use different windows and territories. These dates are eligibility windows, not necessarily submission deadlines.

Award and cycle Release window and territory Entry and process notes
BAFTA Games Awards 2027 Released or to be released in the UK from 15 November 2025 through 19 November 2026. BAFTA 2027 rules Previously entered games generally cannot be re-entered, except in Evolving Game. BAFTA’s Games Committee is the final arbiter of category eligibility.
The Game Awards 2025 cycle Publicly available by Friday, 21 November 2025, at 9 p.m. Pacific Time. Later releases were stated to be eligible for the 2026 ceremony. The Game Awards FAQ The cited FAQ result does not establish a 2026 cutoff, so this date should not be used as the 2026 rule.
D.I.C.E. Awards, 30th annual rules Generally publicly available in North America from 1 January through 31 December 2026. D.I.C.E. 30th annual rules Publisher membership and category-specific release exceptions apply.
Game Developers Choice Awards 2026 Released and made publicly available to consumers during 2025, irrespective of platform or delivery medium. GDCA 2026 competition rules This is the completed 2026 cycle’s rule set, not proof of the detailed 2027 rules.
Game Developers Choice Awards 2027 Game of the Year is open to games released during the previous calendar year. GDCA categories The site says submissions are open to all games, with no submission fee, and lists 1 November 2026 as the submission deadline and 2 March 2027 as the ceremony date. Confirm detailed exceptions in the current rules.
Japan Game Awards: Games of the Year Released in Japan from 1 June 2025 through 31 May 2026. Works released outside the window may be considered if they became notable topics during the year. Japan Game Awards overview The cited rules allow console and PC games regardless of platform type; Japanese versions of foreign titles qualify.

Why do award cycles use different release windows?

Some awards use a calendar year, while others use a period that crosses two calendar years. BAFTA’s 2027 window spans November 2025 to November 2026; Japan Game Awards’ cited window runs from June 2025 to May 2026; D.I.C.E.’s 30th annual rules generally track the 2026 calendar year. GDCA’s 2026 rules cover games released during 2025.

The relevant territory matters as well. BAFTA’s 2027 rules specify release in the UK, Japan Game Awards specifies release in Japan, and D.I.C.E. specifies public availability in North America. A game’s first worldwide launch date alone may not establish when it met a regional release requirement.

Can a game win GOTY if it came out late in the year?

Possibly, if it is publicly available by the cutoff for the award and cycle in question. A late-year launch may fall inside one award’s window but outside another’s. The Game Awards FAQ result, for instance, gave a 21 November 2025, 9 p.m. Pacific cutoff for the 2025 ceremony and said later releases could be eligible for the 2026 ceremony. That does not establish the 2026 ceremony’s exact cutoff; consult its current rules rather than carrying the 2025 date forward.

Also check how the award defines availability. The cited rules use terms such as “released” or “publicly available,” and the exact test can be award-specific. A scheduled launch, early access release, or availability in a different market should not be assumed to meet a particular award’s requirements without checking its rules.

Do early access, DLC, remakes, and remasters qualify?

Not automatically. Awards distinguish new standalone games from expansions, ports, and updated versions, and may have separate exceptions for craft categories or particular types of remake.

BAFTA Games Awards

  • Early access games are generally ineligible, though an appeal may be possible; that is not blanket eligibility.
  • DLC is not treated as a new standalone game, but may be considered in specified craft or performance categories if it demonstrates the required originality.
  • Remakes cannot enter Best Game or British Game. Craft and performance categories may accept remakes when significant originality is demonstrated.
  • Remasters are ineligible unless the original game predates the first BAFTA Games Awards.

D.I.C.E. Awards

  • A remake may be eligible when it demonstrates changes to technical, gameplay, or art assets.
  • A remaster or port without significant changes to the core experience is not eligible.
  • Online Game of the Year and Fighting Game of the Year have specific release-period exceptions, so the general window is not the whole rule for those categories.

Game Developers Choice Awards

  • The 2026 rules exclude upgrades, expansions, and mission packs.
  • For 2027, check the current detailed rules before assuming that the prior cycle’s exclusions apply unchanged.

Does a publisher have to submit the game?

Entry requirements differ by award. Under the D.I.C.E. 30th annual rules, the publisher generally must be an AIAS member in good standing to submit a title; non-member companies may submit only in craft categories. The GDCA 2027 site says submissions are open to all games and there is no submission fee, with a listed deadline of 1 November 2026. These are different entry systems, so neither should be generalized to other awards.

BAFTA encourages entrants to provide voter access, including game codes or access through Steam or Epic bundles. That is an entrant-side process detail, not a separate eligibility condition for a player or a recommendation about what to buy.

Who nominates and votes for the winner?

Eligibility tells you what may be considered; the voting system determines how nominees and winners are chosen. Public participation varies, and a public-vote award or audience category is not the same as a public share of an overall GOTY result.

Award Nomination and winner selection
BAFTA Games Awards 2027 BAFTA describes roughly 1,700 experienced games professionals and industry juries. Members vote in the first round. Members determine nominees and winners for Best Game, British Game, and Evolving Game; other categories’ longlists are considered by juries of nine to twelve industry experts. Evolving Game is open to member voting in all rounds. BAFTA 2027 announcement
The Game Awards 2025 cycle The cited official FAQ result says an international jury of more than 100 media and influencer outlets chooses nominees for most categories; winners are determined by a 90% jury and 10% public-vote blend. These figures describe the 2025-cycle information and do not establish the current split. The Game Awards FAQ
D.I.C.E. Awards, 30th annual rules Peer-panel leaders and panelists narrow submissions to five Game of the Year finalists; Academy members then vote. Eligible members include active Creative/Technical, Business, and Affiliate members. Members rank up to three nominees, and an instant-runoff tally continues until a title reaches a majority. D.I.C.E. rules and D.I.C.E. voting process
Game Developers Choice Awards The 2026 rules describe nominations by the invitation-only International Choice Awards Network (ICAN), a network of game creators that also selects winners; a separate Audience Award is public. For 2027, the categories page says GOTY is nominated by ICAN. 2026 rules and 2027 categories
Japan Game Awards General-vote results are a reference for the selection committee, which decides winners. The committee evaluates design, programming, graphics, sound, scenario, and user evaluation; general votes and sales volumes may inform deliberation. Japan Game Awards overview

Why is a game eligible for one GOTY award but not another?

Because award eligibility is local to each award’s rules. Differences in release window, territory, entry conditions, category definitions, and version policy can produce different outcomes for the same title. A Japan release inside the Japan Game Awards window does not by itself prove the game met BAFTA’s UK window; a remake accepted under one award’s rules may be excluded from a particular category elsewhere.

Use this checklist when checking a specific title:

  1. Name the award and cycle year, not just “GOTY.”
  2. Check the release window and qualifying territory, including what the rules mean by public availability.
  3. Confirm whether the title is a new game, early access release, DLC, expansion, remake, remaster, port, or ongoing game, and read category-specific exceptions.
  4. Check who is allowed to submit, any membership or fee conditions, and the submission deadline separately from release eligibility.
  5. Verify who selects nominees and winners, and whether public voting applies to the category or only to a separate award.

Rules change by cycle. BAFTA says it reviews criteria annually, so remembered cutoffs or version rules should not be treated as permanent. The available Game Awards FAQ result supports a 2025 cutoff and voting description, but does not establish its 2026 cutoff or whether that voting split remains in effect. BAFTA 2027 rules
