Fuel can be made using carbon dioxide captured from ordinary air, but air alone cannot supply the energy or all the ingredients. The process captures CO₂, combines it with hydrogen or other reactants, and converts it through chemical steps into fuel molecules. Those steps require substantial energy, and burning the finished fuel releases its carbon back into the atmosphere. Whether the overall process reduces emissions depends on how the energy and hydrogen are made and on the rest of the fuel’s lifecycle.
What “fuel from air” means
Air contains carbon dioxide, but in a low concentration. Direct air capture, or DAC, separates some of that CO₂ from ambient air. The captured carbon can then become part of a hydrocarbon fuel, such as gasoline or jet fuel, after further chemical processing.
That carbon is only one ingredient. The process also needs energy, and many routes need hydrogen. Capturing CO₂, producing hydrogen, and converting the captured carbon into fuel all take energy. The phrase “fuel from air” describes the source of the carbon; it does not mean that fuel forms from air without additional inputs.

Both can provide carbon for fuel synthesis, but only the first begins with CO₂ drawn from ordinary air. The U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) archive includes project descriptions involving captured power-plant CO₂, so those examples should not automatically be called ambient-air fuel production.

How the conversion works
After capture, CO₂ must be chemically reduced and combined with hydrogen or other reactants. Several routes can do this, and they should not be treated as one standard process.
CO₂ to syngas, then hydrocarbons
One route converts CO₂ into synthesis gas, or syngas, a mixture principally of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The syngas can then be processed using Fischer–Tropsch chemistry to make hydrocarbons. DOE NETL project descriptions cover research into CO₂ conversion to syngas and possible downstream diesel or gasoline synthesis. These are descriptions of funded research and intended work, not proof that a commercial fuel plant resulted.

Methanol as an intermediate
Another proposed route first makes methanol from captured carbon and hydrogen, then converts the methanol into gasoline. This is a different conversion chain from syngas followed by Fischer–Tropsch synthesis, even though both ultimately aim to produce hydrocarbons.

Other catalytic or direct-conversion claims
A 2019 Chemistry World report also described a company’s claimed direct-reaction approach. Its founder, Rob McGinnis, said that “the only inputs to make the fuel are CO2 and water (both from the air) and electricity, and the only outputs are fuel and oxygen.” That is a company founder’s description reported at the time, not independently established evidence of the process’s full inputs, outputs, or lifecycle performance.

What determines the climate impact
Fuel made with atmospheric carbon is not automatically carbon-neutral. When the fuel is burned, its carbon returns to the atmosphere. A climate benefit depends on the full chain: how much energy capture and conversion consume, how that electricity and heat are generated, how the hydrogen is produced, what emissions arise during processing, and which fuel or other emissions the product displaces.
The 2021 SEC-hosted AIR RACE exhibit describes an announced process using renewable electricity, including solar, wind, wave, and hydro, and characterizes the intended result as zero net carbon. That is the exhibit’s claim about the announced process; it is not an independently verified lifecycle finding or evidence of present-day operating performance.

The sources available here do not provide a comprehensive, independently validated lifecycle comparison for current commercial products. They therefore do not support a blanket claim that fuel made from air has zero emissions. The carbon source matters, but so do the energy and hydrogen sources and the emissions along the entire production chain.
How mature are the approaches?
The evidence spans research, pilot work, engineering proposals, and company announcements. Those categories are not interchangeable: a project description or announced partnership does not establish that a facility is operating, producing fuel at scale, or meeting a stated lifecycle target.

The 2019 Chemistry World article reported McGinnis’s theoretical estimate that efficiency could reach 50–60% at maturity. It is an attributed theoretical estimate, not a measured result or an industry-wide benchmark.
These dated accounts are useful for understanding proposed routes and past development claims, but they do not establish which named facilities operate today, their present capacities, or whether fuel from air is currently available as a commercial product at scale.
What to look for when evaluating a claim
- Carbon source: Does the process capture CO₂ from ambient air, or use a concentrated industrial source?
- Conversion route: Does it use syngas and Fischer–Tropsch synthesis, a methanol intermediate, or another stated pathway?
- Energy and hydrogen: What supplies the electricity and heat, and how is any required hydrogen produced?
- Evidence level: Is the claim about laboratory research, a pilot, an engineering proposal, an announced partnership, or a verified operating facility?
- Lifecycle accounting: Does the claim account for capture, hydrogen, conversion, and combustion, rather than relying only on the fact that the carbon came from air?
Without those details, labels such as “renewable fuel,” “zero net carbon,” or “fuel from air” are not enough to determine the product’s actual climate impact.
