FPGAs can help run AI inference close to sensors by implementing selected parts of a workload in reconfigurable hardware. That can suit systems where response time, local data, limited connectivity, or keeping sensitive information on-device matters. It is not a universal replacement for CPUs, GPUs, or custom silicon: the right choice depends on the model, interfaces, power and thermal limits, cost, and how likely the workload is to change.
This article explains the architecture described by Mark Oliver, Efinix’s VP of Marketing and Business Development, in an Efinix-associated Electronic Design article published September 24, 2026. Its comparisons are qualitative, not independent benchmark results.
Why run AI inference at the edge?
Edge inference means processing data near where it is produced, such as on or near a sensor, rather than sending every input to a remote data center. The central architectural advantage is locality: a device can act on nearby data without relying on a round trip over a network.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Latency: A local system may respond without waiting for a remote service and network connection. The article explains this benefit but does not quantify a latency improvement.
- Local context: Processing near a sensor can preserve time-sensitive information that might otherwise be delayed or discarded during transmission.
- Data movement and connectivity: Doing more processing locally can reduce the need to transmit raw data, which can be useful when bandwidth or connectivity is constrained.
- Confidentiality: Keeping more data on-device can limit what needs to travel over public networks. This is an architectural benefit, not a guarantee of security or privacy.
Centralized computing remains important. Training and workloads that need information from across a network or very large shared compute resources may be better suited to data-center infrastructure. Many systems can divide work between local inference and centralized services.

What an FPGA contributes
An FPGA, or field-programmable gate array, is a device whose hardware logic can be configured after manufacture. As Oliver puts it, “FPGAs are reprogrammable devices that can be configured to replicate any desired hardware function.” In an edge-AI design, that configurability can let engineers implement selected processing functions in hardware rather than relying exclusively on general-purpose software execution.
The practical attraction is adaptability: a design can allocate hardware to functions that benefit from acceleration, and the hardware configuration can be revised as requirements evolve. An FPGA can also support incremental acceleration—moving selected parts of an algorithm into hardware while leaving the rest in software. The trade-off is that programmable logic carries silicon overhead; for the same function, an FPGA can cost more and use more power than dedicated custom silicon.

How software and FPGA fabric can work together
The proposed approach is heterogeneous rather than all-or-nothing. Software remains useful for control code, interfaces, and communications, while FPGA fabric can handle selected pre-processing, AI operations, or post-processing. This lets a design target the portions of a workload that justify dedicated hardware without requiring every function to be implemented there.
Recommended Free Tools
- Keep general control in software. Use the processor side of the system for tasks that benefit from flexibility, such as coordinating the application and managing interfaces.
- Identify the costly or time-sensitive work. Examine the actual inference pipeline, including input preparation and result handling, rather than assuming the AI model is the only candidate for acceleration.
- Move selected work into the FPGA. Implement functions in programmable logic when their performance or integration needs justify the added hardware-design effort.
- Measure the complete system. Validate the resulting latency, throughput, power, thermal behavior, memory use, and development effort on the intended hardware and workload.
Keeping a function in software generally preserves more implementation flexibility; moving it into FPGA logic can provide a more tailored hardware path, but introduces design and verification work. The article does not provide measured comparisons or a universal threshold for deciding which functions to move.

How CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs, and custom silicon differ
These are design options, not a simple ranking. The article contrasts software flexibility in CPUs with the parallelism of GPUs and custom silicon, and presents FPGA reconfiguration as another way to tailor hardware. CPUs can run AI workloads; the source does not establish that they cannot, or provide benchmark evidence that any one architecture is always faster or more efficient.
| Option | What the article emphasizes | Key design question |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | Software flexibility | Can the processor meet the workload’s response-time and throughput needs within the system’s power and thermal limits? |
| GPU | Parallelism | Does the workload and platform benefit from the available parallel processing, and can the system support its memory, power, and software requirements? |
| FPGA | Reconfigurable hardware and incremental acceleration | Are the benefits of tailoring hardware worth the FPGA’s silicon overhead and the engineering effort? |
| Custom silicon | Dedicated implementation of a function | Is the workload stable enough, and does its expected scale justify a dedicated design despite reduced flexibility? |
The article provides no side-by-side measured results, product recommendation, or application-specific break-even point. Compare candidate systems on the actual inference workload, required latency and throughput, power and thermal envelope, unit and development cost, interfaces and memory, model and toolchain support, schedule, and likelihood of algorithm changes.

Where RISC-V fits—and where it does not
A RISC-V processor can be implemented as a soft processor inside FPGA fabric. The article also discusses custom instructions that direct work to hardware accelerators. These are possible implementation choices for a heterogeneous design, not prerequisites for FPGA-based edge AI. Whether they make sense depends on the processor, accelerator, toolchain, and application requirements.
What the Efinix article establishes—and what it does not
Oliver’s article makes a supplier-associated case for edge inference and reconfigurable hardware. It discusses potential benefits and trade-offs, but does not supply named, independently attributed statistics or comparative benchmark measurements. Its favorable statements about newer Efinix devices’ efficiency and cost should therefore be treated as the author’s supplier-associated claims, not as independently verified comparisons.
