Flight price alerts track a route, dates, or a specific itinerary and notify you when a service detects a relevant fare change. They can help you spot a live price worth checking, but they do not hold a seat or guarantee that fare will still be available when you book. Historical booking windows can help with timing, but they vary by route and season; there is no universally best day to buy.

What a flight price alert tracks

The scope of the alert determines which price changes matter. Google Flights lets you track a route for chosen dates, search flexible dates using “Any dates,” or track a specific itinerary. Tracking a route can surface changes across relevant flights; tracking a selected itinerary is more useful when the flight details matter.

Google says it emails users when a tracked price changes significantly. For an “Any dates” search, it may email when the route’s minimum price drops significantly over a month; if not, it sends regular email with the best available prices. It can also flag a route likely to become more expensive or a fare that may expire and be replaced by a higher one. Google’s flight-tracking instructions describe the available tracking choices.

Expedia offers signed-in travelers flight price alerts as push notifications when it detects relevant changes and has enough data for the searched route. A lack of notifications may mean the fare stayed stable or the change did not meet the service’s criteria. Expedia does not disclose a universal polling interval, exact delay, or numeric threshold for a significant change, and neither service promises instant alerts. Expedia’s price-tracking explanation outlines its coverage caveats.

How to use alerts without missing the details

  1. Set the search scope. In Google Flights, search your route and dates, then turn on price tracking for the route or a particular itinerary. If your dates are flexible, use “Any dates” to follow the route across a wider date range.
  2. Compare dates before narrowing the alert. Google Flights provides a date grid and price graph for flexible-date comparisons, as well as alternative-airport discovery. Its 2024 guidance says route-specific “cheapest time to book” insights appear when enough historical data is available and are tailored to the origin, destination, and selected dates. Google’s trip-planning guidance explains these tools.
  3. Reopen the fare when an alert arrives. Check the live price, flight times, stops, airports, fare class, and booking option. The alert is a prompt to verify a fare, not a reservation; booking links and displayed options can change.
  4. Compare the total cost. Expedia says its price-history graph reflects the lowest fare matching the search criteria and filters, and may exclude paid extras such as checked bags and seat selection. Basic economy can appear among the lowest automatically sorted results. Apply the fare-class filter you actually want and account for baggage and seats before comparing prices.

When fares have historically been lower

Google’s 2022 analysis of U.S. markets examined average round-trip fares observed from August 1, 2017, through August 1, 2022, for trips lasting 6–9 days or 13–16 days and departing from the top 4,000 U.S. markets. Holiday analyses covered trips spanning the holiday. These are historical averages from that U.S.-market dataset, not predictions for every itinerary or a global booking calendar. Google’s 2022 analysis reports the methodology and figures.

Trip or comparison Historical result reported by Google
Domestic U.S. fares Usually lowest 21–60 days before departure, averaging a low 44 days out.
Domestic Thanksgiving Usually lowest 36–74 days before departure, reaching a low 52 days out.
Domestic Christmas Lower-price periods spanned 20–88 days before departure; the average low was 22 days out.
U.S. to Europe Usually lowest 129 days before departure, with lower prices across a 50–179-day window.
U.S. to Mexico or the Caribbean Lowest on average 59 days before departure, within a 37–87-day window.
Departure day Monday–Wednesday departures averaged 12% less than weekend departures, or 20% less when international destinations were excluded.
Nonstop versus connecting Nonstop fares averaged 20% more than fares with stops.
Day of purchase Buying Tuesday–Thursday rather than Saturday or Sunday was only 1.9% cheaper on average.

Those timing estimates are not stable rules. Google’s later analysis, using data it described as covering August 2018–December 2019 and January 2021–July 2023, put the average low for U.S. Christmas fares at 71 days before departure, commonly within a 54–78-day window. Its 2022 analysis had put the Christmas average low at 22 days. For U.S.-to-Europe trips, the later analysis said average prices were lowest 72 or more days before departure. Google’s later booking-trend analysis shows why route- and date-specific information is more useful than treating an old average as a rule.

Why Tuesday is not a magic booking day

The 2022 U.S. analysis found only a 1.9% average difference between buying Tuesday through Thursday and buying on Saturday or Sunday. That small historical difference does not justify waiting for a particular weekday if a fare is acceptable or plans are fixed. Google’s James Byers summarized the finding this way: “There isn’t much value in purchasing your tickets on a certain day of the week — sorry, Tuesday!” The weekday a flight departs can matter more than the weekday you purchase it, but the reported departure-day averages are not promises for a particular route.

What an alert can—and cannot—tell you

Price forecasts are estimates based on historical patterns, not certainty about future fares. Google says its predictions, such as prices being unlikely to drop or likely to increase, rely on historical trends and may not match what happens. Expedia likewise says predictions are not 100% accurate in a rapidly changing global market and that a fare is not guaranteed until ticketing is complete. Google Flights fare guidance explains its price context and prediction caveats.

Deciding whether to book or keep watching

Use alerts as one input alongside your flexibility and the live itinerary. If your dates and route are flexible, compare a wider range of dates and airports, then keep tracking while route-specific information suggests there may be room for a lower fare. If plans are fixed or the current fare is acceptable, booking sooner may be preferable to waiting for an uncertain drop—especially when a service indicates the fare may rise. In either case, make the decision from the price and terms you can actually book, rather than assuming a forecast or historical average will repeat.
