A flash loan supplies temporary capital; it does not, by itself, make a protocol vulnerable. The weakness lies in what a contract lets that capital change or exploit. Gate’s statement about attacks in 2018 does not establish that Gate was attacked with a flash loan—or identify any exploit mechanism.
How a flash-loan attack works
A flash loan lets a borrower access liquidity temporarily within a transaction, then requires repayment under the loan’s conditions. An attacker may use that liquidity to change a market or protocol state, interact with another contract that relies on the changed state, and attempt to extract value before repaying. The central question is not simply whether a flash loan was used; it is which assumption in the target protocol failed.
Ethereum.org describes how a manipulable decentralized-exchange spot price can be pushed by a large trade and then used by a lending protocol to misvalue collateral. ERC-3156, the flash-loan standard, also discusses how temporary liquidity changes can affect a protocol’s economic rules. These are different failure paths: one involves a price input, while another involves how the protocol responds to a temporary change in liquidity.

Which attack vectors should an analysis examine?
| Vector | Assumption that may fail | Potential consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Manipulable spot-price input | A market quote reflects a dependable asset value even when a large trade can move it. | Collateral or another price-dependent value may be miscalculated. |
| Reentrant control flow | A sensitive function cannot be called again before its first invocation finishes. | A callback may reach vulnerable logic while the contract is in an incomplete state. |
| Unverified callback data | The callback’s claimed lender, initiator, token, amount, fee, or data is genuine. | A receiver may act on untrusted arguments or approve an unintended operation. |
| Unbounded economic rules | Rates or other parameters remain safe when liquidity changes sharply and temporarily. | Temporary state changes may produce an exploitable rate or protocol outcome. |
Price manipulation
A protocol that reads a spot quote from a market with insufficient resistance to large trades may treat a momentarily distorted price as reliable. If that quote determines collateral value, borrowing capacity, or another important calculation, the attacker may be able to act on the mispricing while it exists. Ethereum.org notes that a longer time-weighted average price (TWAP) window makes recent large orders less influential than they are in a spot-price reading; a TWAP is a design choice, not a universal guarantee.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Reentrancy
Reentrancy is a control-flow risk, not a synonym for a flash loan. Ethereum.org defines the pattern as a malicious contract calling back into a vulnerable contract before the original function invocation is complete. The review should trace external calls and state updates in sensitive functions and check whether a callback can re-enter before the operation has reached a safe state.
Untrusted callbacks and approvals
ERC-3156 warns: “No arguments can be assumed to be genuine without some kind of verification.” A receiver should validate the lender and, where appropriate, the initiator rather than relying on callback claims about the token, amount, fee, or arbitrary data. It should also implement the standard’s callback and repayment behavior correctly, including reverting if the required callback return hash is not returned. Approval handling belongs in the same trust-boundary review: an approval should not give an untrusted caller authority beyond what the intended operation requires.

Economic rules affected by temporary liquidity
ERC-3156 gives an illustrative risk in which interest rates have no bounds and do not rebalance for flash-induced liquidity changes. The broader review question is whether temporary liquidity can alter a rate, collateral calculation, or other parameter before the protocol uses it. A design should be examined for the assumptions behind those rules, not just for conventional code-level bugs.
What controls can reduce these risks?
- For price manipulation: Ethereum.org recommends decentralized oracle networks that source prices from multiple sources and discusses TWAPs for on-chain prices. Assess the sources, market depth, and observation window against the application’s needs; longer windows reduce sensitivity to recent large orders but do not make every design suitable for every use.
- For reentrancy: Inspect external-call ordering, state updates, and callback paths. Checks-effects-interactions and reentrancy protections are controls to consider where the contract’s flow calls external code before completing sensitive work.
- For callback trust: Verify the lender and, where appropriate, the initiator; validate callback data instead of assuming it is genuine; and implement the specified callback and repayment checks.
- For economic manipulation: Check whether rates and other rules remain within intended bounds during abrupt liquidity changes, and whether they can be exploited before the protocol recalculates or settles them.
These are review controls, not proof that a contract is secure. Ethereum.org identifies independent code review as one way to audit a contract; an audit is a review method, not a guarantee against every vulnerability or economic attack.

Does Gate’s statement establish a flash-loan attack?
No. Gate’s announcement says: “According to the investigation of the relevant US authorities, several well-known platforms were attacked in 2018, but Gate’s users did not suffer any loss in personal assets during this attack.” That is Gate’s statement about an investigation, not a technical postmortem. It says Gate users suffered no personal-asset loss, but does not name the platforms, establish that Gate itself was attacked, identify an exploit path, or describe a flash loan.
The exact date, affected platform, and technical mechanism are not established by that statement. It would therefore be inaccurate to present the 2018 reference as evidence of a Gate flash-loan exploit.

A separate example: the 2022 exchange case
A 2023 U.S. Department of Justice press release describes a separate case involving an alleged July 2022 cryptocurrency exchange smart-contract exploit. The DOJ alleges that a former security engineer inserted fake pricing data and used flash loans as part of the scheme. This is an allegation in an arrest announcement, not evidence about Gate and not an adjudicated finding in that release. It illustrates why an incident analysis should keep the alleged mechanism, the affected target, and the status of the evidence distinct.
