Moving file transfers to the cloud is not just a matter of relocating a server. A managed endpoint can keep familiar partner protocols while sending files directly to cloud storage, but identity, permissions, network boundaries, monitoring, recovery and portability still need deliberate design. The right approach depends on the protocols and controls your workflows require.

What changes when file transfer moves to the cloud?

In a traditional setup, an organization often runs the server that accepts a transfer, then stages, transforms or forwards the file. A cloud-connected design can instead place a managed transfer endpoint at the edge of the workflow and send files to cloud storage for processing. This can let partners keep using familiar clients while the organization changes its storage and processing backend.

The protocol and destination depend on the service. AWS Transfer Family documents SFTP, AS2, FTPS, FTP and browser-based transfers to and from Amazon S3 or EFS. Its managed workflows can copy, tag, scan, filter, compress or decompress, and encrypt or decrypt files. Google Cloud Cloud FTP provides managed SFTP access to Cloud Storage and supports clients such as Cyberduck, FileZilla and WinSCP. These are provider-specific capabilities, not a shared feature set across all cloud transfer products.

There are several levels of change: move an existing server to a cloud virtual machine; use a provider-managed transfer endpoint; or redesign the exchange as a managed workflow with storage and processing integrated. The first keeps more of the old operating model. The latter options can reduce infrastructure work, but may change available controls, integrations and dependencies. The UK National Cyber Security Centre advises adapting security to cloud-native services where suitable, while choosing a service that actually meets the organization’s needs.

How should you compare cloud file-transfer options?

Compare candidate services against the same workload rather than choosing on protocol support or a feature checklist alone. Record what each option supports and what the organization must operate.

Decision area Questions to answer
Protocol and partner fit Which protocols and versions are supported? Can partners keep their current clients? Does the workflow require SFTP, AS2, FTPS, FTP, browser upload or a particular implementation?
Storage and processing Where does the file land: object storage, a managed file system or another target? How are scanning, transformation, encryption and downstream triggers handled?
Identity and network boundaries Can access be limited by identity, role, account, network or endpoint? How are service identities created, reviewed and revoked?
Data protection and location How are data in transit and at rest protected? Who manages keys and rotation? Which regions may store or process data, and how do retention and deletion work?
Reliability and operations What retry or resume behavior exists? How are failures reported, logged and monitored? Who responds to incidents, and how can a failed workflow be recovered?
Portability and exit Can you move files in bulk while preserving metadata, organization, names, permissions and downstream compatibility? What API, protocol or workflow dependencies would need replacing?
Responsibility and cost Which tasks remain yours in a managed, serverless or self-managed deployment? Estimate using current provider pricing for transfer volume, connections, endpoint uptime, storage, requests, processing and egress.

AWS Transfer Family and Google Cloud Cloud FTP illustrate different provider offerings, not interchangeable products or a universal winner. The cited documentation does not establish a like-for-like cost or performance comparison. Verify current protocol details, regional availability and pricing against your own workload.

How do you secure a cloud-connected transfer workflow?

Treat the transfer endpoint, identity plane, storage permissions, processing steps and logs as one system. A secure protocol alone does not ensure that the right person can access only the right files, or that a failure will be detected and recovered.

Identity and least privilege

Give partners and applications distinct identities where practical, grant only the storage and workflow permissions each needs, and plan how access is reviewed and revoked. Google Cloud Cloud FTP maps SFTP users to service accounts and IAM permissions for bucket operations; Google recommends a dedicated service account per user. The UK NCSC also advises strong authentication, including SSO and MFA where appropriate, and monitoring cloud access.

Network and encryption boundaries

Choose deliberately whether endpoints are public or private and restrict access to the narrowest practical network boundary. For example, Google documents external endpoints that can be restricted to specified IP ranges and internal endpoints limited to a VPC through Private Service Connect. Do not assume that another provider offers identical controls. Confirm encryption in transit and at rest, key ownership and rotation, and which protections are the customer’s responsibility. The NCSC also recommends checking that data location matches organizational requirements.

Logs, retries and recovery

Collect audit events that help answer who transferred or accessed data and what happened afterward. Google recommends Cloud Audit Logs for underlying Cloud Storage operations. It also recommends client retries to handle disconnections during infrastructure upgrades. Build on that with explicit duplicate handling, integrity checks, quarantine or malware scanning where required, failure alerts, replay procedures and tested restoration. NIST SP 800-209 identifies data protection, isolation, restoration assurance and encryption among storage-security considerations.

Ongoing configuration review

Managed services shift operational tasks; they do not eliminate security configuration. NIST notes that cloud-based storage access increases management complexity, which in turn raises the probability of configuration errors and associated threats. Review identities, permissions, network rules, logging, retention and provider controls periodically, using automated checks where practical and manual review for context.

What does portability mean in a hybrid-cloud design?

Portability is more than being able to download the file bytes. NIST’s Cloud Computing Standards Roadmap, Revision 2 says bulk object moves need to preserve organization, such as container structure, and associated metadata. It also identifies standard formats and protocols as important to portability, while noting that interoperability standards—particularly for PaaS—have gaps and continue to mature.

Run a proof-of-portability exercise before making a long-term commitment. Use representative file sizes and counts, metadata, naming conventions, permissions, encryption context, transfer history and downstream consumers. Record API and protocol dependencies, proprietary workflow steps, egress assumptions and the time needed to reconnect partners. A successful sample-file copy does not establish that the whole workflow can be moved intact.

For confidential transfers with long protection horizons, AWS announced in May 2025 that SFTP supports ML-KEM (FIPS 203) through hybrid post-quantum key-exchange policies. This is a specific AWS feature, not evidence that all SFTP traffic is post-quantum protected. Before relying on it, verify current policy names, service availability and whether partner clients support the required algorithms.

Where does zero trust fit?

Zero trust is an access-design approach for resources spread across environments, not a file-transfer product or a substitute for configuring the workflow. NIST’s SP 1800-35 describes zero trust as enabling authorized access to resources distributed across on-premises and multiple cloud environments, including for hybrid workers and partners. The 2025 NIST practice-guide project involved 24 collaborators and developed 19 example implementations; those figures describe the project’s scope, not measured file-transfer security outcomes.
