Fertilizer disruptions do not automatically cause lower crop yields or higher grocery bills. They raise costs or restrict availability; farmers’ responses and the timing of a disruption determine whether harvests suffer, while crop prices, inventories, trade, and other costs shape what consumers eventually pay.

How a fertilizer disruption reaches farms

A disruption can start with expensive energy or feedstocks, a plant outage, shipping trouble, export restrictions, sanctions, or conflict. These shocks can reduce the amount of fertilizer available, raise its delivered price, or do both. The effect then travels through farmer decisions and crop seasons before it may reach food markets.

Energy, production, shipping, and trade policy

Nitrogen fertilizer production is energy-intensive: natural gas is an important feedstock for ammonia and urea. Disruption to gas supplies can therefore affect production as well as the cost of making fertilizer. Conflict or trade restrictions can also interrupt shipments of finished fertilizer or the inputs used to produce it.

In its April 2026 report, the World Bank connected the closure of the Strait of Hormuz with disrupted fertilizer exports and production inputs. It also reported production cessation or suspension in Iran and Qatar, reduced urea and ammonia production in India amid lower LNG supply, and possible Chinese export curbs as an additional risk. These are developments reported at that time, not permanent conditions.

The exposure is not evenly distributed. International Fertilizer Association data cited by the World Bank show that the Middle East accounted for almost one quarter of global urea exports and more than 15% of global ammonia exports in 2024. A disruption matters most to a buyer when it affects a major source and alternatives are limited or costly to reach.

Different nutrients follow different paths

Urea is a nitrogen fertilizer; DAP supplies phosphate, while MOP is a potash fertilizer. Their production, trade routes, and market conditions differ, so a shock affecting one nutrient does not imply the same price or availability change for the others. The World Bank’s April 2026 report identified urea as the most affected fertilizer in that outlook.

What recent fertilizer-price figures show

The figures below describe distinct observations and forecasts. The World Bank’s April 2026 report uses data through March 2026 for its monthly fertilizer observations; its full-year projection is not a realized result.

Measure Figure and period What it indicates
World Bank Group fertilizer price index Rose by more than 12% quarter over quarter in 2026 Q1 (World Bank Group, 2026) A broad index increase during the quarter; it does not mean every fertilizer rose by the same amount.
Urea price Average of $725 per metric ton in March 2026, nearly 55% above February and the highest since April 2022 (World Bank Group, 2026) A sharp monthly increase in urea, not a price for all fertilizers or all markets.
World Bank Group fertilizer price index Projected to increase by more than 30% over 2026 (World Bank Group, 2026) A forecast, not a measured full-year change.
Urea, DAP, and MOP prices Averaged about 20% above year-earlier levels in late 2025 (World Bank Group, 2025) A reported comparison across these fertilizers, alongside weak affordability and pressure on some crop margins.
FAO fertilizer price basket $327 per tonne in April 2024, compared with $815 per tonne in April 2022 (FAO, 2024) A historical comparison for the FAO basket; it is not a current price quote.

How a shortage or price spike can affect crop yields

When fertilizer becomes too costly or is unavailable, a farmer may buy less, apply it later, change the nutrient mix, reduce application rates, or plant a different crop. Yield effects depend on which choice is made, the crop’s nutrient needs, soil reserves, weather, and whether fertilizer arrives in the crop’s relevant application window. A missed timing window can matter even if supplies become available later.

Those decisions do not translate into a universal yield loss. The World Bank said that further supply curtailments and demand destruction could harm yields with a lag in some locations. The wording matters: it describes a conditional risk, not a measured global decline or a fixed percentage loss.

Why the global picture can hide local hardship

A 2025 study by Vos, Glauber, Hebebrand, and Rice found only a modest fall in global fertilizer demand during the 2022–2023 crop cycle despite steep cost increases. That global result does not mean farmers everywhere were largely unaffected. Using proxy indicators, the authors estimated more adverse effects for many farmers in Africa, with substantial variation among farmers. They also noted that limited data prevented a complete global assessment of the 2021–2022 shock.

To understand a particular episode, ask whether the affected farmers depend on imports, which nutrient was disrupted, whether alternative suppliers exist, and whether the input was available before planting or application. A national demand total cannot show by itself which growers had to change practices or what happened to their harvests.

Why fertilizer prices can squeeze farm margins

A farm’s margin depends on both input costs and revenue from crops. Higher fertilizer costs squeeze the margin when crop revenues do not rise enough to offset them; falling crop prices at the same time can make the pressure worse. Conversely, fertilizer prices alone cannot establish how much any individual farm’s profit changed.

In December 2025, the World Bank reported that fertilizer affordability remained weak and identified especially tight margins for fertilizer-intensive maize, wheat, and rice. In April 2026, it said urea’s ratio to food prices had reached levels not seen since mid-2022, implying tighter farmer margins. These are affordability signals, not a quantified profit loss for every grower.

Will fertilizer disruptions make food more expensive?

They can contribute to higher food prices, but fertilizer costs do not pass through to grocery prices one-for-one. If farmers use less fertilizer and harvests fall in affected places and seasons, supply may tighten later. Higher energy and other production costs may also add pressure. Whether consumers see a price increase—and how large it is—depends on the size of the harvest, stocks, weather, transport, exchange rates, trade policy, processing, and retail costs, among other factors.

The timing is important: fertilizer decisions happen before or during crop growth, yield effects appear with the harvest, and consumer-price effects can come later. Other regions’ harvests, inventories, or trade flows may cushion a shortfall; conversely, poor harvests or transport problems can compound it. The World Bank’s April 2026 reporting describes food-market effects mainly through higher fertilizer and energy costs, but does not assign a fixed share of grocery inflation to fertilizer alone.

The FAO’s 2024 account offers a reminder that fertilizer markets do not move in one direction indefinitely: fertilizer trade contracted in 2022 and rebounded in 2023, and the FAO’s short-term view at the time was for relative stability in 2024/25. That historical outlook is not a forecast for current conditions.

How to assess a fertilizer shock in a specific place

For a useful local assessment, separate what has happened from what is forecast, and trace the shock through the crop calendar rather than assuming a price increase automatically predicts a yield loss.

  1. Identify the disruption. Is it an energy or feedstock problem, a production outage, a shipping bottleneck, or a trade restriction?
  2. Identify the nutrient and supply route. Check whether the issue concerns urea or another nitrogen fertilizer, phosphate such as DAP, or potash such as MOP—and whether local buyers can use alternative suppliers.
  3. Check timing and affordability. Did the fertilizer reach farmers before the relevant planting or application window? Compare input costs with the crop prices farmers expect to receive.
  4. Look for observed farm responses and harvest results. Distinguish recorded changes in purchases or application from estimates, and both from forecasts of future yields.
  5. Trace market effects beyond the farm. Consider inventories, weather, transport, exchange rates, trade policy, and processing before attributing a wholesale or consumer food-price change to fertilizer.
