Federico Viticci turned a Nintendo Game Boy Camera into a FaceTime video source on an iPad Pro using an Analogue Pocket, its dock and an Elgato Cam Link. The experiment worked on iPadOS 17, but it was a specific 2023 setup—not proof that every capture card or current iPad combination will work.

How the Game Boy Camera reached FaceTime

The Game Boy Camera cartridge ran in an Analogue Pocket, a handheld that plays original Game Boy cartridges. Viticci connected the Pocket to its dock, routed the dock’s video output through an Elgato Cam Link, then connected the capture device to his iPad Pro. The resulting video feed appeared in FaceTime.

In his report, Viticci described iPadOS 17 support for USB Video Class (UVC) input as the key enabler: apps that adopted the relevant API could use compatible external video. In his setup, FaceTime used the connected source as its default camera, with no webcam-selection menu.

Viticci reported that the Pocket sent a 1080p HDMI signal and that FaceTime seemed to prefer it to 720p sources. That was an observation from his test, not a measured or general performance guarantee. He did not report quantified frame rate, latency or image quality.

Which capture device worked—and what did not

The capture hardware mattered. Viticci’s NZXT capture card initially failed to send the Pocket image through to FaceTime, while the Elgato Cam Link worked right away in his setup. The report establishes those two results for his equipment; it does not establish a universal product ranking or guarantee that another Cam Link, capture card or iPad connection will behave the same way.

Anyone attempting a similar chain needs to check that the Game Boy Camera can run in their chosen host, that the capture device provides video input usable by the iPad, and that the HDMI-to-USB connection suits that particular iPad. Apple compatibility across other models and current iPadOS versions is not established by the report.

What callers saw

The feed looked as lo-fi as the Game Boy Camera suggests. Viticci said he was barely recognizable. FaceTime’s Portrait, Center Stage and Studio Light effects did not improve the image in his test.

Gesture reactions were a different story: when Viticci positioned himself and showed a victory sign, the other participant’s iPhone displayed balloons. Heart hands and thumbs-up were not recognized in the test shown in his report.

What the experiment does—and does not—show

This is a novelty webcam setup for someone who wants the distinctive low-resolution Game Boy Camera look, not a route to ordinary webcam quality. The successful chain depended on a cartridge-compatible host, its dock, capture hardware that worked with the iPad, and iPadOS 17’s UVC support. Viticci’s first-person account was published on September 7, 2023; it does not confirm compatibility for current devices or software.

Viticci summed up the unlikely result this way: “Most of all, however, I did not anticipate I’d end up doing FaceTime calls with a Game Boy Camera as my iPad Pro’s webcam.” Read his account in the MacStories report. Secondary coverage of the UVC mechanism and FaceTime use case is available from 9to5Mac.
