Federal Reserve rate decisions influence stocks, bonds, and savings by changing the expected cost of short-term borrowing and shaping broader financial conditions. They do not directly set every loan rate, bond yield, or savings APY. The effects depend on what investors expected, how banks and markets respond, and what the decision signals about the economy.
What does “the Fed’s interest rate” mean?
The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) sets a target range for the federal funds rate, an overnight rate at which financial institutions lend reserve balances to one another. It is the central policy rate commonly meant by “the Fed’s rate,” but it is not the rate on every mortgage, bond, credit card, or deposit account. The FOMC pursues the Federal Reserve’s goals of maximum employment and stable prices, using economic information and public communication to guide its decisions. The Fed uses implementation tools, including interest on reserve balances and the overnight reverse repurchase facility rate, to help keep short-term rates near the target. The Federal Reserve’s federal funds rate FAQ and The Fed Explained describe these roles.
A useful way to think about transmission is: FOMC decision and communication → current and expected short-term rates → wider financial conditions and asset prices → household and business spending and investment → effects on output, employment, and inflation. Each link takes time, and its strength can vary. As Federal Reserve Governor Adriana Kugler put it in an April 22, 2025 speech, “Adjustments to the federal funds rate affect a multitude of financial conditions faced by consumers and businesses.”

Why markets can move before the Fed acts
Markets respond not only to the announced target range but also to what investors expected and what they infer about future policy. If a decision is widely anticipated, asset prices or yields may already have adjusted. A change in the Fed’s communication about the likely path of rates can also matter even if the current target is unchanged. Longer-term rates reflect expected future short-term rates as well as other influences, so one FOMC move does not mechanically reset every Treasury or corporate bond yield. The Fed’s FOMC overview explains how policy decisions and communications fit into the process.

How rate decisions affect stocks
Higher interest rates can put pressure on stock valuations through several channels. They can raise the discount rate investors apply to future cash flows, increase financing costs for some businesses, and make interest-bearing investments more attractive relative to stocks. Companies whose expected profits are further in the future may be especially sensitive to changes in discount rates.
But the Fed does not set stock prices, and a rate move is not a dependable trading signal. Share prices also reflect expected earnings, the economic outlook, risk appetite, and whether the decision surprised investors. A rate cut may support valuations, but it can also arrive alongside weak economic news that weighs on expectations for profits. The Federal Reserve’s May 2026 research survey on monetary policy and the stock market discusses announcement effects, movements before announcements, and longer FOMC-cycle patterns; it does not establish a rule that every cut lifts stocks or every hike lowers them.

How rate decisions affect bonds
For an existing fixed-coupon bond, the coupon is set by the bond’s terms, but its market price changes as comparable market yields change. All else equal, when yields rise, the old bond’s fixed payments look less attractive than newly available yields, so its price tends to fall. When yields decline, its price tends to rise. A new bond issued after market rates rise may offer a higher yield.

The size of a price move depends in part on maturity or duration and credit quality. Longer-duration bonds are generally more sensitive to yield changes than shorter-duration bonds. A bond fund’s market value changes as the bonds it holds are repriced; an individual bond held to maturity has a stated principal repayment if the issuer meets its obligations, but holding it does not eliminate inflation, default, or opportunity-cost risks.

The federal funds target most directly influences short-term rates. Longer-term Treasury and corporate yields also depend on the expected path of future short rates and other market forces. For mechanics of the relationship between interest rates, bond prices, and financial conditions, see the Federal Reserve’s Purposes & Functions overview.
How rate decisions affect savings accounts
A higher federal funds target tends to put upward pressure on short-term market rates and may be reflected in bank deposit offers; a lower target tends to put downward pressure. But the Fed does not set a savings account’s APY. Banks choose what to offer, and the timing and size of changes can differ by bank and account. Account terms, fees, minimums, and access conditions also affect what a saver receives.

Check the current APY and terms directly with the institution rather than assuming an account will change in lockstep with the latest FOMC announcement. The Federal Reserve’s interest-rate FAQ describes the general relationship between policy and bank rates, not a uniform schedule for individual accounts.

The Federal Reserve’s July 2026 Monetary Policy Report said the FOMC had maintained its target range at 3.5–3.75 percent since the beginning of 2026. The report also described Treasury yields rising in the first half of the year, with the largest increases at shorter maturities, broad equity price indexes rising, and corporate bond yields rising moderately. Those different directions show why the policy rate alone cannot explain every market move. These are dated observations from the report, not current market quotes or a forecast.
