Meta said provisions of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), enacted July 4, 2025, reduced its U.S. federal cash tax payments for the rest of 2025 and in future years. The law allows immediate expensing of certain domestic research and development costs and capital expenditures beginning in 2025, so eligible costs can reduce taxable income sooner. That can improve near-term cash flow, but it does not show that tax savings paid for all of Meta’s AI buildout.
How faster deductions affect Meta’s cash flow
A deduction reduces the income on which tax is calculated. When a company can deduct an eligible cost sooner, it may pay less tax now and retain cash that would otherwise have gone to the government. The deduction does not itself provide cash equal to the cost of the equipment or research, and moving a deduction earlier is not the same as permanently eliminating tax on that amount.
Meta’s 2025 filing says OBBBA provisions reduced its U.S. federal cash tax payments for the remainder of 2025 and future years. The company identified immediate expensing of domestic research and development costs and certain capital expenditures beginning in 2025. The filing does not say that the resulting cash-flow benefit was earmarked for data centers or that it financed the entire AI program.

Meta reported $69.69 billion in cash purchases of property and equipment in 2025, primarily for servers, data centers, and network infrastructure. Its 2025 Form 10-K also anticipated capital expenditures of $115 billion to $135 billion in 2026 to support AI efforts and its core business. That range is the outlook in the 2025 filing, not a guarantee of spending or necessarily Meta’s latest outlook.

The scale of those investments helps explain why faster deductions matter to cash planning: allowing eligible costs to be deducted sooner can leave more cash available in the near term. But Meta’s reported spending and the tax provisions are related context, not proof that any particular tax benefit paid for a particular facility.
Faster deductions and research credits are different
The deduction provisions and the federal research tax credit are separate tax mechanisms. A deduction changes taxable income and the timing of tax payments. A research credit is governed by Section 41 of the Internal Revenue Code, titled “Credit for increasing research activities.” The statute’s framework includes qualified research expenses above a base amount; whether specific property or equipment qualifies requires applying the rules to the facts.

- Space Saving: Maximum depth: 14.8". Use the wall mount network cabinet to maximize available space for retail locations, classrooms, back offices, network cabinets, and other locations where space is limited.
- Fast Heat Dissipation: The server cabinet is designed with vents to optimize airflow and avoid critical IT equipment overheating. Heat sink holes in the top, bottom, and rear panels are more conducive to heat dissipation.
- Sturdy Construction: Robust welded frame construction for durability and long service life. With 100 lbs wall-mounted load capacity and 200 lbs ground-mounted load capacity, you can place multiple devices in the server rack cabinet as needed.
- High Security: The locked glass door ensures the security of data and equipment. Wall mount rack enclosure server cabinet is ideal for use in public places such as offices, effectively protecting the security of your devices.
- Hassle-free Installation: Fully adjustable square-hole mounting rails of the wall mount server cabinet facilitate device installation. Wiring holes on the top, bottom, and rear panels provide you with easy cable routing.

| Immediate expensing or faster deductions | Can bring eligible deductions forward, reducing taxable income and potentially lowering near-term tax payments. | Meta said OBBBA provisions reduced its U.S. federal cash tax payments for the remainder of 2025 and future years. |
| Research tax credit | Provides a credit under Section 41 for qualifying increases in research activities, subject to statutory rules. | Meta reported company-wide research tax credit figures. The filing passage does not attribute all of the 2025 figure to data centers, and the statute alone does not establish whether particular facilities or equipment qualify. |
What Meta reported about research tax credits
Meta’s company filing reported research tax credits of $3.9 billion in 2025, $2.0 billion in 2024, and $0.7 billion in 2023. Those are company-reported figures. The cited filing passage does not say that all, or any specified portion, of the 2025 credit came from data centers.

A separate tax-accounting charge
Meta also reported a $15.93 billion charge in the third quarter of 2025, mostly a valuation allowance against U.S. federal deferred tax assets, in connection with OBBBA and the corporate alternative minimum tax. This is a separate reported accounting item; it should not be read as the amount of cash tax saved through faster deductions or as a measure of the research credit.

The U.S. Code text for Section 41, stated as law in effect on September 12, 2026, describes the research-credit framework; it does not resolve how Meta’s reported facilities should be treated. The IRS’s research-credit page provides agency forms, guidance, and updates, but it is not a Meta-specific ruling.

H.R. 10448, introduced September 16, 2026, proposes excluding qualifying data-center property from bonus depreciation. It is a bill, not evidence that the law has changed. Separately, the Congressional Research Service has discussed energy tax benefits for data centers, but that broader context does not establish that energy incentives explain Meta’s reported research-credit position.
