There is no defensible “fastest Neovim distribution” ranking in the available published evidence. Neovim provides a built-in startup trace, but comparing LazyVim, NvChad, AstroNvim, or a minimal setup requires measuring them under the same conditions and defining what “started” means.
What Neovim startup measurements can tell you
Neovim’s --startuptime {fname} option writes startup timing messages to a file. The trace can help identify time spent loading configuration, plugins, and the first file. See the Neovim startup documentation.
For a narrower baseline, nvim --clean mimics a fresh install by skipping user initialization and excluding user directories from runtimepath. It is useful for understanding Neovim without your usual configuration, but it is not an apples-to-apples substitute for a configured distribution.

A process launch, the end of a startup trace, a UI connection, and an editor that is visibly ready are different endpoints. A result is meaningful only when its endpoint and workload are stated.

How to benchmark distributions fairly
- Choose the workload and endpoint. Specify whether Neovim starts empty or opens a representative file, and whether the endpoint is process launch, trace completion, UI connection, or visible readiness. If opening files matters, run that as a separate workload.
- Fix the test environment. Record the machine and CPU, operating system and version, terminal or UI, and power or performance state. Use the same Neovim version and equivalent plugin and external-dependency states for each configuration.
- Record each configuration precisely. Identify the distribution revision and lockfile, plugin state, and any dependencies. Separate initial installation, compilation, or network work from ordinary startup.
- Control cache state. Label runs as cold or warm and explain how caches were reset or warmed. Do not mix unlike cache conditions.
- Repeat runs and report the spread. Publish repeated measurements and their variability rather than selecting only the best run. Keep the workload, endpoint, and conditions unchanged across runs.
- Name the timing method. Use the same profiler and endpoint for all configurations in a comparison, and report exactly what it measures.
These controls follow from the differences in documented tools and their scopes; they are a practical comparison method, not a universal protocol prescribed by Neovim or the distribution projects.
Use the right profiler for the question
Neovim’s built-in startup trace
Run nvim --startuptime startup.log to write timing messages to startup.log. The trace is useful for locating slow startup work, including configuration and plugin loading. Neovim’s Lua plugin guide also recommends --startuptime when examining a plugin’s startup impact; it discusses deferring require calls and putting filetype-specific initialization in ftplugin/{filetype}.lua as relevant configuration practices. See the Neovim Lua guide.
lazy.nvim’s profile and statistics
The lazy.nvim profiling documentation describes :Lazy profile and require("lazy").stats(). Its statistics include time to UIEnter, plugin totals, the number loaded, and timing data. The documentation distinguishes accurate process CPU-time reporting on Linux and macOS from a timestamp-delta estimate, and notes that CPU time can be higher than nvim --startuptime.

Because these tools can measure different endpoints and timing quantities, do not place a --startuptime result and a lazy.nvim UIEnter or CPU-time result into one ranking as if they were interchangeable.
What the available distribution information does—and does not—show
Neovim’s documentation lists LazyVim, NvChad, and kickstart.nvim as popular extension packs or distributions. It also says Neovim is not affiliated with or responsible for those projects and recommends eventually learning stock Neovim and adding settings incrementally. That is context about project status, not a performance comparison. See Neovim’s user documentation.
NvChad’s plugin documentation says, “We lazy load almost 95% of the plugins,” and recommends lazy loading as an efficient way to reduce startup time. That is NvChad’s description of its plugin-loading design, not an independently measured startup result or evidence that it is faster than another distribution.
Rank #4
LazyVim documents an optional vim-startuptime extra configured with ten tries. That describes the tool integration’s configured number of tries; it is not a published LazyVim startup result or a head-to-head comparison. See LazyVim’s vim-startuptime extra.
The available sources establish no comparable startup measurements for LazyVim, NvChad, AstroNvim, or a minimal configuration. In particular, they do not support naming a fastest option or assigning startup times to any of them. A useful comparison would also keep speed distinct from how much functionality is available at the chosen ready endpoint and from setup cost.
Best Value
What a useful comparison should report
- Time to the stated ready endpoint.
- Cold-start and warm-start behavior, with cache handling explained.
- Empty launch and, if relevant, a separate run opening the same representative file.
- Repeated-run variability.
- Functionality available at the endpoint and any setup work kept separate from routine startup.
Those measurements let readers judge the trade-off that matters to them instead of treating a distribution’s plugin-loading policy as a speed score.
