For the original HTC Vive Base Station 1.0, HTC recommends keeping the two stations no more than 5 m (16 ft 4 in) apart. That figure does not automatically apply to Base Station 2.0: HTC describes 2.0 coverage in terms of play-area size and tracking range, and its published area figures vary by page and setup. “Vive sensors” or “Vive cameras” usually means these SteamVR tracking units, which HTC calls base stations.
How far apart can Base Station 1.0 units be?
HTC’s setup guidance for Base Station 1.0 recommends a maximum of 5 m (16 ft 4 in) between the two stations for optimal tracking. This is the explicit station-to-station distance guidance in HTC’s 1.0 setup material: HTC’s Base Station 1.0 setup tips.
HTC separately describes the 1.0 room-scale area as at least 2 m × 1.5 m, with movement within a diagonal up to 5 m. A play-area dimension or diagonal is not the same measurement as the distance between the stations, so use the 5 m station-spacing recommendation when positioning the two units.

Do not treat the 1.0 limit as a universal rule for 2.0. The HTC pages cited here describe 2.0 play-area dimensions and the distance from a station to tracked devices, rather than giving one general maximum distance between two stations.

| HTC SteamVR Base Station 2.0 product specifications | Two stations support an area up to 5 m × 5 m; four support up to 10 m × 10 m. HTC Base Station 2.0 specifications |
| HTC guidance for installing more than two 2.0 stations | Up to four stations in one room, with the headset and controllers within 7 m of a station for proper tracking. This is device-to-station range, not a station-to-station spacing limit. HTC multi-station guidance |
These figures are not interchangeable: the 7 m device range describes how far tracked devices should be from a station, while the square dimensions describe a play area. HTC’s FAQ and product page also give different two-station area figures for the Vive Pro 2 context; check the page relevant to your headset and setup rather than converting either area into an unstated station-spacing maximum. HTC lists the Vive Pro 2 as compatible with both generations, while its Base Station 2.0 product information lists Vive Pro Series and Cosmos Elite compatibility. See HTC’s Vive Pro 2 base-station compatibility information.
Where should you mount the stations?
For either generation, mount the stations diagonally across the play area and aim them toward its center. Put them high enough to see the tracked devices and keep their fields of view clear. The angle and minimum-height recommendations differ by generation:

What can interrupt tracking?
- Obstructions: Keep furniture, shelving, and other objects from blocking the line of sight between the stations and tracked devices.
- Movement or vibration: Secure the mounts so a station cannot be bumped or vibrate out of position.
- Bright light: HTC warns that bright-light locations can negatively affect base-station performance. Avoid aiming stations at a bright window or placing them where strong light can interfere.
When should you consider adding stations?
If the room is too large or tracking remains obstructed, first confirm that your headset and controllers support Base Station 2.0. HTC’s cited guidance supports up to four 2.0 stations in one room, with SteamVR handling channel assignment automatically. The cited sources do not establish the same expansion option for Base Station 1.0, so do not assume that a 1.0 setup can use the 2.0 multi-station arrangement.
