An eSIM does the same essential job as a removable SIM: it provides the subscriber identity your phone uses to authenticate with a mobile carrier. The difference is that its profile is installed digitally on a secure component inside the device, so a compatible phone can connect without a card being inserted. A manufacturer can omit the SIM tray on models designed for eSIM-only service, but eSIM support—and whether a tray is present—depends on the exact phone variant, region, and carrier.

How does eSIM work?

A conventional SIM is a secure element that holds subscriber credentials used to authenticate a phone on a mobile network. An eSIM preserves that role; it changes how the SIM profile is provisioned and where the SIM component is housed. The GSMA describes the eSIM approach as securely downloading a SIM profile into a secure element embedded in a device. Its architecture guide describes remote SIM provisioning functionality embedded in a UICC, a component that may be attached to a device or deployed in a removable chip. GSMA eSIM overview; GSMA, A guide to eSIM Architectures (2024).

As the GSMA puts it, “Although an eSIM is technologically different from a physical SIM, its primary purpose is the same: it authenticates the Device to make calls, send messages, and access the internet seamlessly.” An eSIM does not replace the need for a subscriber identity, a mobile carrier, or a service plan.

Why might a phone have no SIM slot?

Because the phone can receive its carrier profile digitally, a manufacturer can build a model without a tray for a removable SIM. That is a hardware and market choice, not a property of every eSIM-capable phone: many devices support eSIM while retaining a physical SIM slot. Manufacturers may also sell different SIM configurations of a phone in different markets.

Apple says eSIM is supported on iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and later, while noting that availability depends on the device model and region. That does not mean every model or regional variant has the same SIM arrangement. Check the exact model and market before buying, especially if you rely on a physical SIM. Apple: About eSIM on iPhone.

How do you activate or transfer an eSIM?

The carrier determines which provisioning methods are available for its plans and supported devices. On iPhone, Apple documents options that can include carrier activation, Quick Transfer where supported, scanning a carrier-provided QR code, using a carrier link or app, or entering details manually. Some transfers from Android or other non-Apple devices may also be supported. Setup may require Wi-Fi or another internet connection. Apple: About eSIM on iPhone.

If you are converting a physical SIM line to eSIM or replacing one profile with another, follow the carrier and device instructions. The old SIM may stop working when the line is converted, so do not remove a working SIM before the new service is confirmed according to those instructions.

What to check before choosing a phone or plan

  • Exact model and regional variant: Confirm that the version sold in your country supports eSIM and has the SIM configuration you want.
  • Carrier and plan support: Ask whether your carrier supports eSIM for that specific phone and plan, and which activation method it offers. Device capability alone does not guarantee carrier support. Google Pixel Help: Use a SIM card.
  • Line and data configuration: Check how many lines the particular model can use and which line or lines can provide data at the same time. These capabilities vary by device.
  • Unlocked status: If you want to use a second carrier or a travel eSIM, confirm that the phone is unlocked for use with another provider.
  • Travel coverage and bands: Check that the provider serves your destination and that the phone supports the cellular bands used there.

Can you use an eSIM when traveling?

Typically, travelers can either keep their home carrier’s roaming service or buy a travel eSIM from a local carrier or a worldwide provider. The phone must be unlocked to use a different provider, and coverage depends on the plan and destination network. An eSIM does not automatically make roaming free, guarantee local coverage, or ensure compatibility with every destination’s cellular bands. Apple outlines the roaming and travel-eSIM options in its iPhone eSIM guidance.
