“Naturally trapped enzymes” refers here to a laboratory method for immobilizing enzymes as biomimetic silica forms—not to enzymes being trapped naturally inside organisms. In a 2004 study, researchers used diatom-derived silaffin polypeptides to form silica nanospheres around butyrylcholinesterase. They reported that the enzyme retained all measured activity, that 90% of the soluble enzyme was immobilized, and that the silica particles could be used in a flow-through reactor. Those findings apply to the study’s enzyme and formulation, not to every enzyme placed in silica.
What “naturally trapped enzymes” means
The phrase appeared as a headline for work on naturally inspired enzyme immobilization. In the underlying experiment, “trapping” means physically enclosing an enzyme in silica as the support material precipitates around it. The method is called biomimetic because it draws on silaffin polypeptides associated with diatoms, organisms that make silica structures.
This is a laboratory process, not a general biological category. The enzyme does not have to come from a diatom, and the reported experiment did not show that organisms naturally trap enzymes this way.

Heather R. Luckarift, Jim C. Spain, Rajesh R. Naik, and Morley O. Stone described the method in “Enzyme immobilization in a biomimetic silica support,” published in Nature Biotechnology in 2004. Their approach used silaffin polypeptides derived from diatoms to catalyze silica formation in vitro. The authors described the reaction as occurring at neutral pH and at ambient temperature and pressure, with the enzyme present as silica nanospheres precipitated around it.

Immobilization keeps the enzyme associated with a solid support rather than freely dissolved in the reaction mixture. In principle, that can make the enzyme easier to separate from reaction material and can support use in a flow-through setup. The study’s demonstration of flow-through use is specific to its silica nanospheres and butyrylcholinesterase system.
Did the trapped enzyme stay active?
For butyrylcholinesterase in their formulation, Luckarift and colleagues reported that the enzyme “retained all of its activity” measured after entrapment. They also reported immobilizing 90% of the soluble enzyme and finding the immobilized enzyme substantially more stable than the free enzyme. These are results reported in that 2004 study; they should not be read as a general guarantee that any enzyme retains all activity in silica.

- Desiccant Deads Size: VOISEN silica beads are 3-5mm in size and have a bright orange color. Desiccant beads have a strong hygroscopic property and can effectively absorb moisture in the air, keeping items dry and preventing moisture damage to the items, thus protecting the quality of the items.
- Color Indication: Orange silica gel will change to Dark Green when 50-60% absorbed with moisture; Still almost half more capacity is left to absorb moisture even after color change. Recommended to check the color of silica gel beads regularly to ensure their effectiveness
- Reusable:Once desiccant beads turn dark green, can be reactivated by placing in the oven for 0.5 to 2 hours at 200 to 250F Or Microwave for 10 Minutes at defrost mode; They may take shorter than the recommended time, please check the color of the silica beads periodically
- Easy to Use: Our silica desiccant beads are stored in a sealed plastic container for long-term preservation and protection. During use,you can put the silica beads in organza bags, muslin bags, or any other breathable bags to use and observe, so that they can effectively play their role.
- Widely Application: Reusable desiccant beads can be widely used in daily life. You can use it to effectively prevent moisture damage to 3D printer filament, Electronic Devices, Camera, Documents, Jewelry, Gun Safe, clothes and many other valuables.
Other enzyme-and-matrix combinations can behave differently. A separate 2004 sol-gel study reported relative activity of 20% for alpha-amylase and up to 57% for catalase compared with their soluble forms. These figures come from a different study and should not be treated as a direct comparison with the biomimetic silica experiment.

Enclosing an enzyme can improve handling or stability, but the support may also make it harder for substrate molecules to reach the enzyme. A 2024 review on enzymatic disruption of lipid-rich microalgae cell walls describes physical entrapment, typically in a silica matrix, as a way to separate enzyme from reaction material and facilitate recovery. It also notes that steric effects can hinder hydrolytic efficiency and that support material may need replenishment. These are process-level considerations, not reported outcomes of the 2004 butyrylcholinesterase experiment.

- Activity: check activity for the specific enzyme and support rather than assuming it will match the soluble enzyme.
- Stability: determine whether the support improves stability under the intended conditions and over the intended time or use cycles.
- Substrate access: consider whether the silica matrix limits contact between substrate and enzyme.
- Recovery and reuse: assess whether the support can be separated and reused in the actual process; immobilization alone does not establish a particular number of reuse cycles.
- Flow operation: confirm that the particles and reactor configuration suit continuous flow. The 2004 paper reports flow-through use, but does not establish suitability for every process.
What the related studies do—and do not—show
A 2004 Chemical Communications article by Rajesh R. Naik and colleagues, “Entrapment of enzymes and nanoparticles using biomimetically synthesized silica,” is another example of this research area. Its PubMed record indexes catalase and silicon dioxide, but the brief abstract does not provide performance figures that would support further quantitative claims.
Taken together, the studies show why results must be tied to their exact enzyme and matrix. The prominent “all activity retained” result belongs to butyrylcholinesterase in the Luckarift formulation; it is not a defining property of enzyme entrapment in silica.
