Engineers can track Ganges river dolphins in muddy water by listening for their ultrasonic echolocation clicks with underwater hydrophones. In a 2016 trial near Kanpur, India, a team used fixed and boat-towed passive detectors to locate dolphins that visual surveys could miss. The approach can help conservationists find important river areas, but it is a monitoring tool—not a stand-alone solution to pollution, dams or dangerous fishing nets.

Why Ganges river dolphins are difficult to count

The Ganges river dolphin (Platanista gangetica) lives in opaque freshwater and is nearly blind. It navigates and hunts by echolocation: it emits high-frequency clicks and interprets returning echoes. That ability gives researchers an opportunity to monitor the animal acoustically, even when it is invisible below the surface.

The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) describes the species as endangered. It is protected under Schedule I of India’s Wildlife Protection Act and listed in CITES Appendix I. Its habitat is fragmented by dams and barrages; pollution and fishing nets are also major threats. Nets can entangle dolphins or prevent them from surfacing to breathe.

Visual observation remains useful when a dolphin surfaces, but it can miss animals underwater in turbid conditions. Acoustic monitoring can detect their clicks without requiring a sighting, although detection alone does not automatically tell researchers how many individual dolphins are present.

How the passive hydrophone system detected dolphins

What a hydrophone does

A hydrophone is an underwater microphone. The Kanpur team’s system was passive: it listened for sounds rather than transmitting pulses into the river. That makes it different from active sonar, which sends out sound and analyzes returning echoes. The dolphins produced the clicks; the detector recorded them.

How the fixed array estimated position

The stationary detector used six hydrophones mounted on a metal X, with one sensor below the array’s center. A click reached each sensor at a slightly different time. By comparing those arrival times, the system could estimate the sound’s direction and distance; the lower sensor added information for estimating depth. A compass, GPS receiver and inclinometer helped researchers account for the array’s orientation and tilt.

In the 2016 IEEE Spectrum report, the team described dolphin clicks lasting about 40 microseconds on average at a frequency of about 65 kilohertz. The article used roughly 1,500 metres per second as the speed of sound in water for its triangulation explanation. Those figures describe the report’s technical account, not a universal setting for every river or detector. The fixed system was prepared to remain submerged for about six months.

How the boat-towed detector worked

For mobile surveys, researchers towed a detector with four hydrophones behind a boat. A signal processor and laptop displayed detected clicks as the team moved along the river. In one reported run, they surveyed nearly 7 kilometres and located 14 resident dolphins. The display showed streaks of detections even when the animals could not be seen at the surface.

What acoustic surveys can—and cannot—tell researchers

Method What it can contribute Important limitation
Visual survey Direct sightings can confirm animals at the surface and support field observations. Animals underwater in muddy water may be missed; a sighting is fleeting.
Passive hydrophone survey Can detect echolocation clicks underwater and, with a suitable multi-sensor array, estimate direction and three-dimensional position. A click detection is not automatically an individual count. The Kanpur report does not establish a general accuracy rate or a false-detection rate for all conditions.

Acoustic data can help reveal where dolphins travel, feed or gather, making it possible to identify “hot spots” for conservation attention. But researchers must interpret detections carefully: the system hears sounds, not identities. The 2016 report describes locating animals and using click detections to support counts; it does not provide a universal estimate of how reliably every detected click corresponds to a unique dolphin.

The Kanpur work built on earlier hydrophone research in Odisha, where researchers triangulated a solitary dolphin’s position in three dimensions. The team also drew on six years of dry-season work along a comparatively clean 12-kilometre stretch between dams, which helped refine equipment before the more challenging Ganges trial. These are steps in developing a field method, not evidence that one detector can independently produce a complete population census.

What the Kanpur team found in the river

During the reported mobile run, the researchers located 14 resident dolphins over nearly 7 kilometres. The work also brought the team near fishermen using nylon nets close to a dolphin concentration area. Conservationist Viveksheel Sagar planned education work with local fishers around that hot spot. The practical value of mapping is therefore not just a count: it can help direct outreach toward places where dolphins and fishing activity overlap.

The project joined Japanese and Indian engineers and conservationists, including team leader Harumi Sugimatsu of the University of Tokyo and Rajendar Bahl of the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, with SGK System Giken and KDDI. Bahl described the array simply: “Each pair of hydrophones is like a pair of ears.”

How this experiment fits with newer dolphin monitoring

The Kanpur field report appeared in IEEE Spectrum in 2016. It reported that fewer than 2,000 Ganges river dolphins were thought to exist at that time. A 2026 Government of India Press Information Bureau release later reported a nationwide population status of 6,324. The two figures come from different dates and survey contexts; without comparable methods and definitions, they should not be read as a direct population trend.

Work Location and context What is established
Kanpur ultrasonic mission (IEEE Spectrum, 2016) Ganges River near Kanpur, India Fixed six-hydrophone and boat-towed four-hydrophone detectors were tested; one mobile run covered nearly 7 kilometres and located 14 resident dolphins.
Acoustic-monitoring report (Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2026) Jamuna River, Bangladesh The report describes acoustic monitoring using Chinese technology and refinement of recognition thresholds to reduce false alarms. Systematic surveys in Bangladesh remain scarce, according to the report.

The Bangladesh work is a separate, newer regional effort—not a continuation of the Kanpur trial or evidence of a single coordinated monitoring network across both countries. The available account does not establish a directly comparable sensor layout, validation method or population estimate for the two projects.

Where acoustic monitoring fits in conservation

Repeated listening stations could help conservation teams identify dolphin movement patterns and prioritize habitat protection, net-risk education and further monitoring. Sugimatsu described a long-term vision of autonomous stations sending data from multiple stretches of the Ganges, eventually helping researchers understand migration patterns. He also imagined a future “weather report” for dolphin activity. Those are goals for an expanded monitoring system, not a description of a network already operating across the river.

India’s Project Dolphin action plan calls for systematic research and monitoring and identifies technology as part of conservation implementation. Government reporting in 2026 also describes continued development of rescue capacity: a Dolphin Rescue Ambulance was inaugurated on 13 January, and eight dolphins were reported rescued and released. Separately, NMCG approved an “Advancing Rescue System for the Protection of Stranded Ganges River Dolphins” project with an estimated budget of ₹1 crore. Rescue infrastructure addresses stranded animals; passive acoustic monitoring addresses where dolphins are and how they use the river. They are complementary, not interchangeable.

For readers interested in the equipment category, the relevant term is underwater hydrophone. The Kanpur detectors were custom research systems combining multiple sensors, signal processing and positioning aids. A single consumer hydrophone or waterproof recorder is not a plug-and-play substitute for that array or its analysis.
