Clicking “unsubscribe” asks the sender to stop sending messages within a particular subscription scope—often the newsletter or mailing list that sent the email. It does not necessarily remove you from every list the organization operates. There are also two different unsubscribe routes: a visible link in the message body and a machine-readable, header-based one-click mechanism that qualifying senders must support for Gmail delivery.
What an unsubscribe request changes
A mailing list is a group of recipients who receive messages under a subscription or list identity. Newsletters and marketing emails are common examples; some notifications can also be subscription messages. When you unsubscribe, the sender should stop sending messages covered by that particular request. The request’s scope matters: removing you from one newsletter does not automatically remove you from every other list run by the same organization.
A sender may offer a separate preferences page where you can choose which lists to keep. That is broader preference management, not necessarily the same action as unsubscribing from the list associated with one email. Read the confirmation screen carefully if you want to stop more than one type of message.
Unsubscribe is not the same as deleting an account
An email opt-out concerns messages, not necessarily your account, purchases, membership, or other relationship with the sender. Conversely, having an account or having previously bought something does not automatically make every promotional email a transactional message. For covered US commercial email, the message’s primary purpose determines whether CAN-SPAM’s commercial-email provisions apply.

The two unsubscribe routes in an email
Visible link in the message body
The familiar “Unsubscribe” link or button appears in the email itself. It may send an opt-out request directly or take you to a preferences page. A page that asks you to sign in, choose lists, or confirm a selection involves additional steps; it is not the same as a header-based one-click request.
For covered US commercial email, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says the message must include a clear and conspicuous explanation of how to opt out. The explanation should make the available route understandable rather than burying it among unrelated text. The FTC’s CAN-SPAM compliance guide states: “Your message must include a clear and conspicuous explanation of how the recipient can opt out of getting marketing email from you in the future.”
Header-based one-click unsubscribe
Email messages can also carry unsubscribe instructions in their headers, which are separate from the visible message body. Google’s one-click guidance describes a List-Unsubscribe header containing an HTTPS URL and a companion List-Unsubscribe-Post header set to List-Unsubscribe=One-Click. This lets a supporting mail service submit an unsubscribe request without requiring the recipient to visit a preferences page or take another action.

A body link alone does not meet Google’s header-based one-click requirement. Google’s guidance says: “Correctly implement one-click unsubscribe for all subscription messages, in a way that no additional user action is needed.” A body link can still be included as an additional route, such as for people who want to manage several subscriptions.
The header mechanism is associated with the list for the message being viewed. In Google’s description, using it removes the recipient from that list; it does not automatically remove them from all lists operated by the sender. Exact controls shown to a recipient can vary by mail service, and the header requirement should not be mistaken for a promise that every email app presents the same button.
What the rules require—and where they apply
The FTC’s CAN-SPAM guidance covers US commercial email. Its rules are not a universal deadline for every country, sender, or kind of email. Google’s sender requirements are a separate provider-specific layer for delivery to personal Gmail accounts; they do not replace or redefine the FTC’s legal requirements.

For covered US commercial email, the FTC also says a sender cannot charge for opting out or require personally identifying information beyond an email address as a condition of honoring the request. A sender must not use spam filtering to block opt-out requests. These conditions are part of the same US legal framework as the FTC deadlines; they should not be presented as worldwide rules.
Which messages count as commercial or transactional?
Whether CAN-SPAM’s commercial-email provisions apply depends on the message’s primary purpose. The FTC describes narrow transactional or relationship categories. They include messages that facilitate a transaction the recipient has agreed to, deliver goods or services already agreed to, provide certain warranty or safety information, or notify a customer about changes to an ongoing relationship.
A message that mixes promotional material with account or transaction information may still have a commercial primary purpose. The subject line and the placement of content matter; calling a message a receipt or sending it to a member does not settle the question by itself. Google’s one-click requirement also distinguishes subscription messages from transactional messages. Google gives password resets, purchase receipts, and one-time passwords as examples of transactional mail excluded from that specific one-click requirement. This provider distinction is not a substitute for applying the FTC’s primary-purpose test to US commercial email.

For organizations sending newsletters or other subscription mail, an unsubscribe route only works well if the sender knows which subscription the message represents and can act on a request against that list. Google’s guidance recommends identifying each subscription list with a human-readable List-id header or a distinct From address. Clear identity helps recipients and mail systems distinguish one subscription from another.

- Separate subscription types. Keep newsletters and marketing subscriptions distinguishable from transactional mail. Google recommends using different addresses for subscription and transactional messages.
- Confirm signups. Google recommends confirming the address after signup (sometimes called double consent). This helps ensure the person who entered the address intended to receive the messages.
- Identify each list. Use a human-readable
List-idor a distinctFromaddress so a message’s subscription identity is clear. - Implement the qualifying headers. For relevant subscription messages subject to Google’s requirement, include the HTTPS unsubscribe URL in
List-Unsubscribeand the one-click POST indicator inList-Unsubscribe-Post. A visible body link is not a substitute. - Process requests promptly. Google recommends fulfilling unsubscribe requests within 48 hours. The FTC’s separate CAN-SPAM summary gives a 10-business-day honoring period for covered US commercial email.
- Send to people who want the messages. Google recommends sending to recipients who want the mail and confirming addresses as part of list practices.
These are Google sender practices and requirements, not universal legal rules. The FTC says mailing lists, listservs, and online groups are generally covered by CAN-SPAM when the primary purpose of their messages is commercial. Both initiators and senders may bear responsibility for compliance, and hiring a mailing service does not by itself transfer away a sender’s legal responsibility. What to do if an unsubscribe does not work
First identify which route you used. A body link may have opened a preferences page where a list selection or final confirmation is still required. A header-based one-click request is intended not to require another user action, but the relevant policy still gives the sender time to process it; do not assume every system updates its list instantly.
- Check the scope. Confirm whether the request was for a single newsletter or for several categories on a preferences page. Other lists from the same organization may remain active.
- Complete any visible confirmation. If a body link opened a page asking you to select a subscription or confirm your choice, complete that step and look for an on-screen confirmation.
- Allow the applicable processing period. For covered US commercial email, the FTC says opt-outs must be honored within 10 business days. Google recommends processing requests within 48 hours for its subscription guidance; these are different scopes and must not be conflated.
- Use the sender’s stated contact route if messages continue. Keep the message and any confirmation details so you can explain which address and list are involved. Do not provide extra personal information just to satisfy an opt-out request covered by CAN-SPAM.
An unsubscribe does not necessarily stop messages that fall outside the subscription you selected, nor does the evidence here establish one universal process for every country and email provider. For US commercial email, the FTC’s opt-out rules apply within the scope of CAN-SPAM; Gmail’s sender requirements apply within Google’s stated scope.
