Electrochromism can make a latent fingerprint visible by depositing a color-changing material on the metal around the print. On stainless steel, fingerprint residue can inhibit that electrochemical deposition, leaving the residue-covered ridges as a contrasting, often negative image. Researchers have demonstrated the approach with several materials, but the published results describe laboratory studies—not a standardized field procedure.
How electrochromic fingerprint enhancement works
In the foundational approach, a stainless-steel surface bearing a latent fingerprint is used as an electrode. Fingerprint residue masks parts of the metal and inhibits electrochemical processes there. A polymer therefore deposits more readily on the exposed background than on the residue-covered ridges, producing a negative image of the fingermark.
The applied electrical potential can also change the deposited material’s optical properties. The 2010 polyaniline study describes this adjustment as continuous and reversible, allowing contrast to be tuned after deposition: By variation of the applied potential, the polymer optical characteristics can be continuously and reversibly adjusted to optimize visual contrast of the fingerprint.
(American Chemical Society, 2010; PubMed, 2010).
Materials investigated
| Study | Electrochromic material | How the study produced or adjusted contrast |
|---|---|---|
| 2010 | Polyaniline | Selective deposition on stainless steel formed a negative fingerprint image; applied potential reversibly adjusted optical appearance. (ACS) |
| 2012 | Polyaniline and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) | Compared electrochromic enhancement on stainless steel with conventional methods, using samples with different donors, exposure conditions, and aging periods. (Office of Justice Programs) |
| 2021 | Electrodeposited cobalt oxide (Co3O4) | Applied potential reversibly adjusted film optics; the study also reported improved image contrast by extracting the blue channel from captured images. (Electrochimica Acta) |
| 2024 | Electrodeposited manganese oxides | Described simultaneous fingerprint development and enhancement in a neutral aqueous electrolyte. (PubMed; Talanta) |
What the comparative study found
The 2012 study compared its polyaniline- and PEDOT-based electrochromic procedures with dusting, wet powder, and cyanoacrylate fuming. Its abstract reports that electrochromic enhancement “frequently outperformed” those methods, particularly for samples with more challenging histories. The work used stainless steel and varied donors and exposure conditions; aging periods extended up to 28 days. That 28-day figure describes the study’s maximum sample-aging period, not how long a method remains effective.
#1 Best Overall
- Basic Fingerprint Kit: the basic latent fingerprint kit is a true print kit, this fingerprinting kit was created for educational use, comes fully stocked with supplies to provide at least 25 runs, and comes with 1 carrying case for storage
- Fiberglass Fingerprint Brush: fiberglass brush gets softer with every use; This brush can hold more powder than traditional bristle brushes; Stores in included tube for reuse
- Latent Fingerprint Powder: silver and black bichromatic fingerprint powder appears black when powdered on light colored surfaces and gray when powdered on dark-colored surfaces; It is effective on most nonabsorbent surfaces
- Fingerprint Cards: fingerprint cards have two sides, place the raised print on a smooth, glossy white backing, the back of the card is an area for the case number, time, date and a diagram showing the location of the print
- Fingerprint Extraction Tape: 1 roll of ultra transparent palm fingerprint extraction tape, tear off a piece of tape, you can cut it freely as needed, lift the developed print, and stick the tape to the backing card
This finding belongs to that experiment. The comparison does not establish that electrochromism will outperform conventional development methods in operational casework, and its results should not be combined into a ranking with the later studies, which used different materials and study designs. (Office of Justice Programs, 2012; PubMed, 2012).
What the DNA results do—and do not—show
Some studies assessed whether treated fingerprints could still be used for forensic DNA typing. The 2021 Co3O4 study reported detected loci at 80.9% after its electrochemical process. The 2024 manganese-oxide study reported up to 98.5% detected loci after its treatment. These are results from the respective studies and procedures, not universal DNA recovery rates; the percentages should not be read as a direct comparison between methods. (Electrochimica Acta, 2021; PubMed, 2024).
Rank #2
- This fingerprint kit is a real print kit, fully stocked with enough supplies. This Kit was created and priced for educational use.
- 1 regular latent powder, 1 oz.
- 1 fiberglass fingerprint brush, extra soft
- 1 set of fingerprint backing cards (25 sheets)
- 1 lifting tape pad ( 25 sheets )
Scope and practical limits
- Substrate: The cited work focuses chiefly on stainless steel. It does not validate performance across all metals or other surfaces.
- Laboratory research: The studies establish experimental approaches and material-specific results, not routine forensic deployment or a single accepted operating protocol.
- Specialized setup: The method depends on electrochemical treatment and suitable materials; the cited studies do not provide a universal, ready-to-use procedure for field investigators.
A University of Leicester technology-transfer document indicates commercialization interest, but does not establish that a standardized product or field protocol is currently available. (University of Leicester).
