Ebola is not airborne: simply passing or standing near someone does not spread it. Infection usually requires blood or other infectious body fluids to reach broken skin or the eyes, nose, or mouth, so avoiding direct contact and following local public-health instructions are the key precautions during an outbreak.
How Ebola spreads
Ebola viruses can infect people through animal-to-human spillover and then spread from person to person. The virus must enter through broken skin or a mucous membrane, such as the lining of the eyes, nose, or mouth. The WHO Ebola disease fact sheet, published 24 April 2025, says fruit bats are thought to be natural hosts.
From infected animals
People may become infected after close contact with the blood, secretions, organs, or other body fluids of an infected wild animal. Animals that may carry Ebola viruses include bats and non-human primates. Avoid sick or dead wild animals, and cook animal products thoroughly.
From a sick or deceased person
Infection can occur when blood or other body fluids from someone who is sick or has died of Ebola reach broken skin or the eyes, nose, or mouth. CDC lists fluids to avoid that include urine, feces, saliva, sweat, vomit, breast milk, amniotic fluid, semen, and vaginal fluid. Contact with contaminated objects or surfaces can also transmit the virus. Funerals may pose a risk when mourners directly touch the body.

Can you catch Ebola just by being nearby?
No. Ebola does not spread through the air like respiratory viruses, and being near or passing someone is not, by itself, a route of transmission. This distinction does not mean all close contact is safe: direct fluid contact and contaminated objects remain risks. CDC’s Ebola Disease Basics, updated 2 June 2026, explains that Ebola does not spread the same way as flu or COVID.
A person is not infectious before symptoms begin. WHO says people remain infectious while the virus is present in their blood. Rare sexual transmission from a male survivor has been documented because virus can persist in semen after recovery; this is a specific persistence route, not ordinary casual contact. CDC advises avoiding semen exposure until testing shows the virus is no longer present.

Who is at greater risk of exposure?
Risk is greatest for people whose roles or circumstances bring them into contact with an infected person’s body fluids, contaminated materials, or body. Close caregivers, health and care workers, and people who touch a body during funeral rites can face higher exposure, particularly when protective measures are not followed.

The clinical measures in the table are for trained professionals, not instructions for an untrained person to manage suspected Ebola at home. CDC’s Clinical Guidance for Ebola Disease, dated 27 May 2026, calls for prompt isolation of a suspected patient in a single room, appropriate PPE, dedicated equipment, and notification of public-health authorities.

What should people do to protect themselves during an outbreak?
- Follow instructions from local health authorities, including any directions about suspected cases, monitoring, or travel from an affected area.
- Wash your hands regularly.
- Avoid contact with anyone suspected or confirmed to have Ebola, their body fluids, and items that may be contaminated. Do not touch the body of someone who may have died of Ebola.
- Avoid sick or dead wild animals, including bats and primates, and cook animal products thoroughly.
These measures reduce opportunities for exposure; they do not replace outbreak-specific directions from public-health authorities. Response plans use measures such as rapid case detection, contact monitoring, infection control, testing, and safe and dignified burials.
What should people do after direct physical contact with someone with Ebola disease?
- Contact a healthcare provider or local health facility promptly. Tell them about the possible exposure and follow their instructions rather than seeking care without warning.
- Follow public-health directions for monitoring. Contacts may be monitored for 21 days after exposure. Authorities can tell you what monitoring applies to your circumstances.
- If symptoms develop, seek care immediately. Tell providers about the possible Ebola exposure before arriving and follow local instructions for getting care.
If you have travelled from an outbreak area, contact a healthcare provider or local public-health authority for advice even if you have not had direct contact with a known case.

What symptoms can appear, and when?
The incubation period—the time from infection to symptom onset—is 2–21 days. CDC says symptoms commonly begin abruptly around 8–10 days after exposure. Early symptoms can include fever, chills, muscle aches, and fatigue. Later symptoms may include severe watery diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

These early symptoms overlap with malaria and other common infections, so symptoms alone cannot establish whether someone has Ebola. Bleeding is not universal and may occur later. The following percentages come from CDC’s summary of symptoms reported during the 2014–2016 West Africa outbreak; they are historical figures, not a forecast for an individual or a description of a current outbreak:

Does the Ebola vaccine protect against every Ebola virus?
No. Vaccine and treatment availability depends on the virus species and jurisdiction. CDC says the U.S.-approved ERVEBO vaccine prevents disease caused by Orthoebolavirus zairense. The FDA-approved treatments Inmazeb and Ebanga are also for disease caused by this species. CDC says there are no FDA-licensed vaccines or therapeutics for Sudan virus, Taï Forest virus, or Bundibugyo virus disease. WHO distinguishes Ebola virus disease from diseases caused by other Ebola viruses. Follow public-health advice for the specific outbreak rather than assuming a vaccine or treatment covers every Ebola disease.
Outbreak figures are time-specific
CDC’s report on the 2026 Democratic Republic of the Congo Bundibugyo virus outbreak recorded 5,458 confirmed cases and 2,606 confirmed deaths as of 21 August 2026, describing it as the second-largest Ebola outbreak recorded at that point. These are a dated snapshot, not current totals for 4 October 2026. Outbreak status can change; check local health-authority updates for the situation where you are. The figures are reported in the CDC MMWR report, with data through 21 August 2026.
