eBay’s shift to Adyen was about who managed marketplace payments, not a decision to remove PayPal as a way to pay. In 2018, eBay announced that it would manage the payment flow on its marketplace and named Adyen its primary processing partner. PayPal remained a buyer checkout option in eBay’s later rollout descriptions.
The change unfolded over several years. eBay planned a staged transition beginning in North America in 2018, reported managed payments live in all global markets in 2021, and had described 2022 as its target for completing the rollout. Those are historical milestones, not a current guide to payment methods, fees, or payout timing.

Will eBay stop using PayPal?
Not in the sense of removing PayPal as a buyer payment method. eBay’s 2018 announcement said PayPal would remain an option at checkout, and its 2020 rollout update still listed PayPal among the ways buyers could pay. The change was that eBay would take a more direct role in managing marketplace payments, rather than relying on its former operating arrangement with PayPal.
That distinction matters: PayPal is a payment method buyers may select; Adyen was named eBay’s primary payments processing partner. They are not interchangeable roles. The cited announcements establish PayPal’s availability in those periods, but do not establish which payment methods are available today in every country.

What changed in eBay’s payment arrangement?
Before the transition, PayPal had been a long-time payment partner. eBay’s plan was to bring the marketplace payment experience under eBay’s management, while working with Adyen as its primary processing partner. eBay said the change would let buyers use multiple payment options through an eBay-managed checkout and give sellers a more consolidated place to manage payment-related activity.
In July 2020, eBay’s corporate history records the expiration of its operating agreement with PayPal and says eBay then began scaling its management of payments globally. That describes a change in the companies’ operating relationship; it does not, by itself, mean buyers could no longer choose PayPal.

Why did eBay choose Adyen?
eBay named Adyen its primary processing partner as part of its plan to manage marketplace payments directly. The stated aim was to simplify the marketplace experience and reduce friction for buyers and sellers. In a 2020 statement, eBay Vice President of Global Payments Alyssa Cutright said, “Taking control of the payments process on our platform is a key component of our strategy to enhance the eBay experience by breaking down barriers and removing complexities for our customers.”

That is eBay’s explanation of its strategy, not independent proof that the change improved every customer’s experience. The cited material does not establish the present-day technical or contractual division of payment processing between eBay and Adyen.

In a separate 2020 product update, eBay reported more than $3 billion in GMV for more than 32,000 sellers using managed payments. That milestone is also historical, not a current total. The figures above reflect different announcements and reporting points, so they should not be combined as if they describe the same population or date.

For buyers: an eBay-managed checkout with multiple payment options
eBay described the buyer-facing change as a single marketplace checkout that could support different ways to pay. Its 2020 examples included credit cards, PayPal, Apple Pay on iPhone and iPad, Google Pay on eBay and its Android app, and selected local services such as Afterpay in Australia and Paybright in Canada. These were dated examples from eBay’s rollout communications, not a current or universal list.

For sellers: payment activity in a more consolidated workspace
eBay presented managed payments as a way for sellers to see inventory and finances in one dashboard, with reporting, fees, refunds, protections, and payout scheduling. In a 2018 Q&A, eBay said cleared funds for managed-payments sellers would generally be paid daily to the seller’s bank account, while noting that settlement timing could depend on payment-card brands and banks. What the rollout figures do—and don’t—show
- eBay’s 2020 rollout announcements reported millions and billions in historical seller and GMV milestones, while its 2021 update reported more than 13 million sellers and over 80% of on-platform GMV processed through managed payments at the end of Q2 2021.
- eBay also stated a target of processing over 90% of on-platform volume in Q3 2021. That was a target, not a reported result.
- These company-reported figures document the scale and pace of the historical transition. They do not establish current seller participation, present payment methods by country, current fees, or current payout schedules.
