Flash Page is presented by its author, Amit Dudhat, as a JavaScript library that predicts likely navigation and warms the destination before a click—while limiting speculative work when it may waste resources or burden a server. Its key idea is not to prefetch every link: use different signals for pointer and touch navigation, apply browser-specific loading paths, and add safeguards for network conditions, state-changing links, and server backpressure. The design details below are Dudhat’s account, published in 2025; they are not independently verified performance results or a current browser-compatibility audit.
What problem is Flash Page trying to solve?
A normal navigation begins after a visitor activates a link. Speculative navigation tries to begin some of that work earlier, so the transition may feel faster if the visitor follows a likely path. The trade-off is that a prediction can be wrong: an unnecessary request consumes bandwidth and browser resources, and speculative traffic can add load to an origin or cache layer.
Dudhat describes Flash Page as a zero-dependency vanilla JavaScript library, with full and lite bundles and npm, CDN, or self-hosted delivery options. The article reports approximate gzipped bundle sizes of 8 KB for the full version and 5.7 KB for lite. Package availability, bundle contents, and those sizes have not been independently checked here.
How does it predict a likely destination?
Desktop: infer intent from pointer movement
Rather than waiting for a cursor to settle over a link, the article describes sampling pointer movement about every 25 milliseconds—roughly 40 times per second—and projecting the trajectory 120 milliseconds ahead. The implementation checks the projected point and two points flared to either side for a link. It also uses a hover debounce as a fallback, while velocity thresholds are intended to ignore slow drift and erratic movement.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
These are parameters reported by the author, not independently tested recommendations. A trajectory can suggest intent, but it cannot establish that a user will activate the link; the lookahead and thresholds therefore balance earlier preparation against false predictions.
Touch: learn repeated navigation transitions
Touch interfaces do not offer the same pointer trajectory. Dudhat says Flash Page instead stores navigation transitions in localStorage and makes idle-time predictions from repeated patterns. The described model caps its table at 50 source paths and requires a transition to have occurred at least three times and account for at least 60% of observed transitions from that source before prefetching.

The author characterizes this history as local and privacy-preserving. That claim has not been independently audited. The article also notes that Safari may clear script-written localStorage after inactivity, so learned patterns may not persist. The thresholds describe the article’s implementation; they do not demonstrate that its predictions improve real-world performance.
What loading strategies does it describe?
The article says Flash Page varies its request mechanism by browser. The following distinctions are the author’s account, not a verified, up-to-date compatibility matrix.

| Approach | How the article describes it | Trade-off or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Native Speculation Rules | Used in supported Chromium browsers for browser-managed speculative navigation. | The page’s JavaScript cannot inspect response status for these out-of-process requests, according to the author, limiting client-side backpressure handling. |
<link rel="prefetch"> |
Used as a fallback in some browsers. | Support and behavior vary, and the article does not establish a current browser-by-browser support list. |
| Fetch-based cache warming | Described for Safari/WebKit and manual requests; JavaScript can inspect the fetch response. | It depends on responses being cacheable and does not itself prepare a page’s subresources in the way a browser navigation mechanism may. |
| Prerendering | Described as an optional Chromium configuration that prepares a page in advance. | Scripts can run in the hidden page, potentially triggering analytics or media behavior before the visitor navigates. |
These options differ in more than speed. A team evaluating speculative navigation needs to consider browser coverage, whether response status can be observed, cache semantics, server controls, the possibility of side effects, and whether it is fetching a document or rendering one in advance.
How does the design try to avoid waste and server overload?
Skip risky or unsuitable links
The article says the library excludes links associated with logout, destructive actions, downloads, new tabs, nofollow, and framework action attributes. This is a crucial boundary: speculative requests should not accidentally perform an action that changes account or application state. The article does not establish that these exclusions cover every application-specific action, so developers would still need to review their own link patterns and server behavior.

Reduce work on constrained devices and connections
Dudhat describes disabling speculation when Save-Data or slow 2G is detectable, pausing when low battery or low reported memory is exposed by available device APIs, and limiting concurrent preload operations to three. These signals are not available uniformly across browsers, according to the article; a safeguard based on a missing API cannot be assumed to run everywhere.

For fetch-based requests, the article says Flash Page pauses after HTTP 429 or 503 responses and reads Retry-After either as a number of seconds or as a date. Its described fallback wait is 30 seconds when no usable retry value is available, with the wait capped at five minutes. These are author-reported implementation rules, not a claim that all speculative request paths can be controlled this way.

That distinction matters for native Chromium speculation: if the request happens outside page JavaScript, the client cannot inspect its response status as described by the author. Server, CDN, or reverse-proxy rules may therefore be needed to recognize or shed speculative traffic. The article does not specify a particular configuration or establish how any particular infrastructure handles such requests.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should a developer verify before enabling this approach?
- Confirm the current implementation: The article’s package, bundle, and compatibility claims were not independently checked. Verify the code and current browser behavior before relying on them.
- Protect state-changing routes: Check both link exclusions and server-side behavior; a client-side prediction should never be the only barrier against an unintended action.
- Inspect caching behavior: A fetched response only helps if the browser can use the cached result for the later navigation. Authentication, cache headers, and request variation can affect whether warming is useful.
- Plan for speculative load: Review origin and edge handling for extra document requests, including traffic that client JavaScript cannot observe or throttle.
- Measure the actual outcome: Compare perceived navigation and request volume under your own traffic and browser mix. Dudhat’s article reports design parameters, not independently measured speed gains or a controlled performance study.
What the article establishes—and what it does not
Dudhat’s 2025 article offers a concrete design for making speculative navigation more selective: use pointer trajectories or repeated touch transitions, choose among browser-dependent warming mechanisms, and constrain requests where the page can observe and influence them. It does not independently establish that the library is currently maintained or available, that its compatibility descriptions remain current, or that its thresholds produce a net performance benefit in a particular site. The author’s stated aim is to avoid downloading everything before a click; whether the approach is beneficial depends on implementation, cache behavior, user patterns, and server capacity.
