To set up Wenker Router locally, install Node.js 18 or later, run the project’s documented install commands, and configure a compatible client to use http://localhost:3600/v1. Then add the credentials for any upstream providers you want to use. Wenker Router provides a gateway; it does not supply model access, API keys, or provider quota.
What “181+ providers” means
WENKER-AI’s undated repository README, reviewed October 7, 2026, lists 181 providers, 269 statically registered model entries, and 560+ routable model IDs when historical aliases are included. These are different counts: the model-ID total includes aliases and expanded upstream defaults. None of the figures means every listed model is live, free, credentialed, or guaranteed to work for your account.
The gateway sits between a client and an upstream service. Requests still go to the cloud provider you configure, or to a local model endpoint such as Ollama, LM Studio, or vLLM. A provider’s own availability, credentials, quota, and billing rules still apply. WENKER-AI’s repository

The official README documents a source checkout, a Windows batch-file option, global npm installation, and running through npx. The source route is the clearest choice if you want to inspect or modify the project. For the other methods, follow the project’s current README for environment-specific details; the available documentation does not establish comparative security, reliability, or version-pinning behavior.

Install from source
- Install Node.js 18 or later.
- Clone the repository and enter its directory:
git clone https://github.com/WENKER-AI/wenker-router.git cd wenker-router - Install dependencies and start the application:
npm install npm start
The official source-install instructions specify npm start. A separate DEV Community walkthrough uses npm run dev for a development workflow; do not substitute that command for the README’s standard start command unless you specifically intend to follow that development workflow. Open the console and configure a provider
After startup, the project says its local console is at http://localhost:3600. Use the console’s provider configuration to add the upstream API key for each service you intend to call. The README’s guidance is explicit: “需要 key 的就是需要 key。想要稳定用上某个具名模型（比如真正的 DeepSeek / Qwen / Llama），请在「供应商」页填入该上游自己的 API key。” In English: if a key is required, provide it; for stable access to a named model, enter that upstream provider’s own API key on the Providers page. Do not assume that selecting a provider name creates an account or grants access to its models. Depending on the upstream, you may need a valid account, a key with the right permissions, and available quota. Cloud usage may incur charges from that provider. Free upstream tiers can have limits and may respond with HTTP 402 or 429 when usage is unavailable or over quota.

For OpenAI-compatible clients, use http://localhost:3600/v1 as the base URL. The README documents model-list and chat-completions routes, as well as embeddings. It also documents an Anthropic-compatible /v1/messages endpoint for compatible clients. Enter the WENKER key expected by the client configuration; a provider’s upstream key is configured separately in the gateway.

The console includes provider configuration, API-key management, routing, and request logs. Exact field names differ among client applications, so use the client’s own settings for base URL, API key, and model ID. Choose a model ID that the gateway can route and that your configured upstream account or local endpoint actually supports.
Understand network exposure before using it remotely
The README says the server defaults to binding on 0.0.0.0, which can make it reachable through network interfaces rather than only through loopback. It describes an administrator credential guard for remote /api requests, but says that guard does not cover /v1/* calls; those use the WENKER key supplied by the client. A local installation therefore should not be treated as automatically isolated from other devices or networks.

- Check the host’s network binding and firewall rules before allowing connections beyond your machine.
- Set and use the client authentication expected by the gateway; do not assume the admin guard protects model API routes.
- Keep provider keys and gateway credentials private, and avoid exposing the service publicly unless you have deliberately configured access controls for that environment.
WENKER-AI describes keys, logs, and configuration as stored locally, with requests sent to an upstream when a provider is invoked. That is the project’s description, not an independent security audit or verification of runtime behavior. Project security and network notes

Choose based on the model you need and where you can legitimately access it. A cloud provider generally requires its own account credentials and has its own quota and billing. A local option such as Ollama, LM Studio, or vLLM avoids relying on a cloud provider for inference, but you still need that model service running and the desired model available there. Wenker Router routes requests; it does not install or host the upstream model for you.

There is no setup-time guarantee or performance benchmark established by the project information cited here. Actual success depends on the chosen installation route, local environment, provider configuration, and upstream availability.
