There is no universal physical conversion from pixels to inches. For a CSS measurement, divide CSS pixels by 96. For an image’s physical print size, divide its pixel count by the output density in pixels per inch (PPI). A screen’s pixel resolution alone does not reveal its physical dimensions.

Choose the conversion that matches what you are measuring

Context What “pixel” means How to find inches What else you need
CSS layout A CSS reference-length unit CSS inches = CSS pixels ÷ 96 No extra density input for the CSS-unit conversion
Printed or otherwise output raster image An image pixel Physical inches = pixel count ÷ output PPI The output PPI, or the print-size setting that determines it
Physical screen measurement A display pixel, whose physical pitch depends on the display Resolution alone cannot determine inches Physical display dimensions or pixel pitch; scaling may also matter for on-screen layout

These are different measurements. CSS defines a relationship between CSS units; image pixels need a known output density to determine physical size; and display pixel dimensions count rows and columns rather than measuring the monitor. MDN documents the CSS length relationship, while NIST explains that pixel dimensions alone do not imply a physical length (MDN: <length> CSS type; NIST: “What does the pixel measure?”).

For CSS, divide by 96

CSS defines 1 inch as 96 CSS pixels, so the conversion is:

CSS inches = CSS pixels ÷ 96

For example, 960 CSS px is 10 CSS in. This is a conversion between CSS units, not a guarantee that a browser element will measure exactly 10 physical inches on every screen. MDN also lists 1 inch as 2.54 cm and 1 point as 1/72 inch (MDN: <length> CSS type).

CSS pixels are not necessarily hardware pixels

A CSS pixel is a reference unit. A browser or operating system can map CSS pixels to device pixels differently depending on the display and scaling. The W3C describes a reference pixel in terms of the visual angle of a pixel on a 96-dpi device viewed from an arm’s length; it is not a claim that every physical display pixel has that size (W3C: CSS Values and Units Module Level 3).

CSS resolution units also have specific meanings: dpi means dots per inch, while dppx means dots per CSS pixel. In CSS resolution notation, 1 dppx corresponds to 96 dpi under the CSS inch definition. That relationship does not make image PPI, printer dots, CSS units and hardware pixels universally interchangeable (MDN: <resolution> CSS type).

For an image’s print size, use its output PPI

To calculate a raster image’s physical size, divide the pixel count along each dimension by the density at which it will be output:

Physical inches = image pixels ÷ output PPI

For example, a 1200-pixel-wide image output at 300 PPI spans 4 inches across (1200 ÷ 300). This is a calculation from the stated density, not a prediction about a particular printer. If you change the output PPI while keeping the image’s pixel count fixed, the physical size changes: a higher PPI yields a smaller physical length.

Pixel dimensions alone do not fix a print size. You need the relevant output density or an application’s print-size setting, which determines the size at which the image is placed. The distinction between pixel counts and physical length is explained by NIST; MDN’s CSS resolution reference separately defines CSS resolution units (NIST: “What does the pixel measure?”; MDN: <resolution> CSS type).

For a screen, resolution does not give physical size

A resolution such as 1920 × 1080 means 1920 pixel columns by 1080 pixel rows. It does not specify the width or height of the display. NIST uses 1920 × 1080 as an example of a pixel count—about 2 megapixels—without implying any physical pixel pitch (NIST: “What does the pixel measure?”).

To establish a monitor’s physical dimensions, you need its physical measurements or enough information to determine its pixel pitch. Microsoft notes that pixel size depends on both display resolution and the monitor’s physical size. Windows documentation gives 96 DPI at 100%, 120 DPI at 125% and 144 DPI at 150% as scaling examples; these describe standard scaling cases, not universal monitor specifications (Microsoft Learn: “DPI and device-independent pixels”).

Quick decision check

  • Measuring CSS layout? Use CSS pixels ÷ 96 to get CSS inches.
  • Finding a raster image’s print dimensions? Use image pixels ÷ the intended output PPI.
  • Estimating a monitor’s physical width or height? Resolution is insufficient; use physical screen measurements or pixel pitch.
