For most DVRs, connect its HDMI output to an HDMI input on your TV, power on the DVR, then use the TV remote’s Input or Source button to choose that HDMI input. The DVR also needs the correct incoming signal—antenna, cable, or satellite—connected as its manual specifies.
What you need to check before connecting a DVR
Look at the ports on the back of the DVR and TV, and check the manuals for both. The steps below cover common connections, but the incoming signal wiring varies by DVR and by whether you use an antenna, cable service, or satellite service.
- An available HDMI input on the TV and an HDMI output on the DVR for the usual playback connection.
- The appropriate incoming signal cable and DVR input, such as an antenna lead connected to an over-the-air DVR’s RF IN.
- Power for the DVR.
Sony’s DVR/DVD recorder HDMI setup guide advises consulting the device manual and describes an antenna/cable-to-recorder-to-TV arrangement. If a provider set-top box feeds a separate DVR, follow the provider’s and DVR’s instructions rather than assuming that arrangement applies.

How to connect a DVR to a smart TV with HDMI
- Connect the incoming signal to the DVR. For an antenna setup, connect the antenna to the DVR’s RF IN. For cable or satellite, use the input and wiring specified for your equipment. Some setups also pass an RF signal from the DVR’s RF OUT to the TV, but that is separate from the playback connection.
- Connect the DVR to the TV. Plug one end of an HDMI cable into the DVR’s HDMI output and the other into an available HDMI input on the TV. Summit Broadband also identifies HDMI as the DVR-to-TV connection in its DVR cabling instructions.
- Power on the equipment. Connect and turn on the DVR, then turn on the TV.
- Select the TV input. Press Input or Source on the TV remote and choose the HDMI input number used for the DVR. Channel Master’s DVR+ quick-start guide likewise directs users to select the correct HDMI input and follow the on-screen setup wizard.
- Complete any on-screen setup. Follow the DVR prompts to configure its service or antenna channels, if prompted.
RF coaxial and HDMI do different jobs
A coaxial cable may carry the incoming antenna or cable signal into the DVR, or pass that signal onward to a TV. It is not automatically the DVR’s playback connection. For the TV to show recordings and DVR menus, use the recorder’s supported audio/video output—typically HDMI—connected to a matching TV input. Sony’s guidance distinguishes RF pass-through from the AV connection used for playback.

When to use composite A/V instead
If both devices have compatible composite A/V ports but no usable HDMI connection, connect the DVR’s composite video and audio outputs to the matching TV inputs, then select the TV’s AV input. Composite cables are usually identified by yellow video and red/white audio plugs; match the plugs to the corresponding labels and colors. Confirm the ports on both devices first, because some newer TVs do not include composite inputs. Sony describes the alternative in its composite DVR/DVD recorder setup guide.

If the TV shows no picture
- Make sure the DVR is powered on.
- Check that the cable is firmly seated and runs from the DVR’s output to the TV’s input, not output-to-output.
- Confirm the TV is set to the exact HDMI or AV input used.
- Check the manuals for model-specific connection requirements; supported resolutions and setup menus vary.
- If a cable or satellite set-top box feeds a separate DVR, use the specific provider and DVR setup instructions for that arrangement.
