To add live chat support to a website, choose between building a custom chat system and embedding a hosted support widget. Build custom when you need control over the interface, data, or agent workflow; use a hosted widget when a vendor-managed setup and a faster launch matter more. Either way, a working support service needs more than a live connection: it also needs saved conversations, an agent interface, access controls, and a plan for what happens when a connection drops.
Choose a custom app or a hosted widget
Make this decision before choosing implementation details. A custom system gives you room to shape the visitor experience, identity rules, data handling, and agent workflow. It also means your team must build and operate those parts. A hosted widget can avoid building the underlying support backend, but ties setup and operation to the vendor’s product and available configuration.
| Consideration | Custom chat app | Hosted widget |
|---|---|---|
| Interface and workflow | Greater control over the visitor UI and agent workflow. | Configure the options the vendor provides. |
| Time to launch | Requires implementing and operating the app’s chat components. | Can use the vendor’s widget and setup path. |
| Data and access | You define storage, authorization, and retention behavior. | Review the vendor’s security, data, and retention controls. |
| Agent tools and integrations | You build or integrate assignment, transcript, and existing support workflows. | Check the vendor’s available agent and integration features. |
| Cost and dependency | Estimate operating costs for your expected scale and account for the services you depend on. | Review current pricing, service limits, and vendor dependency before choosing. |
The available documentation supports both approaches but does not establish which is cheaper or provides particular service limits. Compare them against your expected conversation volume, agents, retention needs, regions, and integrations using current vendor terms.
When a hosted widget fits
Choose a widget if you want to add a support entry point without implementing message storage, delivery, and the agent experience yourself. Zendesk’s documentation, for example, describes configuring Web Widget (Classic), setting appearance and forms, applying security rules, and adding its provided snippet to site pages. Another setup guide distinguishes Chat-only from Chat plus Support configurations. Product labels and availability can change, so follow the vendor’s current instructions: Zendesk: Enable live chat using Web Widget (Classic) and Zendesk: Chat-only or Chat + Support.

What a custom support chat needs
A support app combines several responsibilities. A WebSocket can carry messages in real time, but it does not by itself provide a complete support product. Plan for these components:
- Visitor interface: A chat window for starting a conversation, viewing messages, and seeing connection or handoff status.
- Real-time delivery: A transport that sends new messages between visitors and agents.
- Conversation storage: A persistent record of messages and conversation state, with rules governing who may access it.
- Agent interface: A way for support staff to see incoming conversations and reply.
- Identity and authorization: A deliberate approach to visitor identity and permissions for every conversation.
- Operations: Deployment over HTTPS, plus behavior for disconnections, retries, duplicate submissions, ordering, and escalation.
For a managed web application learning path, Firebase’s AngularFire codelab demonstrates a chat client using Firestore, Firebase Storage, Firebase Authentication, Firebase App Hosting, Firebase Cloud Messaging, and performance monitoring. It lists a GitHub account, code editor, and npm/Node.js among its prerequisites; the exercise may require upgrading the project to the Blaze billing plan. Build the real-time and persistence layers
Use a managed WebSocket backend
Supabase Edge Functions can host WebSocket servers for bidirectional browser communication, including chat and live updates. The browser authentication detail matters: browser WebSocket clients cannot send custom headers, so a conventional authorization-header check will not authenticate them. Supabase describes alternatives such as passing a JWT through a query parameter or custom protocol and validating it explicitly. Never put a privileged secret key in browser code; keep privileged credentials on trusted server infrastructure and limit access to conversation records. See Supabase Edge Functions WebSockets.

Separate message delivery from database access
Supabase Realtime Broadcast supports low-latency delivery through client libraries, REST, or database-triggered broadcasts. A channel’s public setting controls who may subscribe; it does not determine who can read stored messages from the database. Protect conversation records with explicit authorization policies, and test those policies independently from channel subscriptions. The product documentation describes the feature and its security distinction at Supabase Realtime Broadcast.

If you work directly with Supabase’s Realtime protocol, its reference documents a WebSocket connection URL followed by a channel-join step. Protocol and SDK details can change, so consult the current reference for the version you implement: Supabase Realtime protocol.
Design authentication and permissions before launch
Decide whether visitors must sign in or receive an anonymous session, then enforce that decision wherever a conversation can be read or changed. An opaque conversation ID is not a substitute for authorization. Verify identity on the server or through supported platform mechanisms, and ensure a visitor cannot access another visitor’s transcript or impersonate an agent.

- Authorize conversation reads and writes at the data layer.
- Check channel subscription permissions separately from database permissions.
- Keep privileged credentials off the client.
- Test access as an unauthenticated visitor, an authenticated visitor who owns a conversation, a different visitor, and an agent.
- Define transcript access, retention, deletion, privacy notices, and escalation rules for your business and jurisdiction.
Platform features alone do not establish that a deployment meets a particular legal requirement. Determine the applicable rules for your service and where it operates.

Real-time primitives do not define a complete delivery guarantee for your support app. Specify and test what happens when a visitor or agent loses connectivity, reconnects, retries a send, or submits the same message twice. Choose how the interface distinguishes a message that is still sending from one that has been accepted, and how conversation ordering is represented. The cited platform documentation provides transport and storage capabilities, not a universal policy for these cases.

Decide what offline means for support
Offline support is a product decision, not an automatic consequence of using a database with persistence. Firebase documents Firestore offline persistence and service-worker asset caching for PWAs, along with authentication-state behavior. Those capabilities do not determine whether a support message should queue, when it should expire, or how it should reconcile after reconnection; your app must define those semantics. See Firebase: Make your web app a progressive web app.
Deploy securely and add optional AI carefully
Serve the production app over HTTPS. Firebase’s PWA guidance states that PWAs must be served over HTTPS and describes Firebase Hosting certificates, custom domains, and CDN capabilities. Treat these as platform features rather than a guarantee that your own chat behavior works offline or is correctly authorized.
If you add an AI assistant, keep sensitive business rules and authorization in a trusted server-side layer, and provide a path to human support. Firebase’s customer-support AI codelab uses Firebase AI Logic with a server-side prompt template and recommends Firebase App Check to help ensure requests come from the actual web app. It warns against allowing localhost domains in production App Check configuration. See Firebase customer-support AI codelab.

Implementation sequence
- Set the support requirements. Decide whether visitors sign in, what agents need to do, which integrations matter, how long transcripts are retained, and what escalation looks like.
- Choose the delivery model. Select a hosted widget for a vendor-managed route or a custom app for greater control over the interface, data, and workflow.
- Map the conversation lifecycle. Define how a conversation starts, how an agent joins, what states it can enter, and how it closes or escalates.
- Select the storage and real-time services. Verify current product capabilities, billing terms, and limits for your expected use; the examples above are implementation paths, not a universal best stack.
- Implement identity and authorization. Enforce visitor and agent permissions for both stored records and live channels. Keep privileged credentials on trusted infrastructure.
- Build visitor and agent interfaces. Include clear sending, connection, and conversation states rather than treating a successful socket connection as proof a support workflow is complete.
- Test failure and access cases. Exercise disconnections, reconnects, retries, duplicate sends, message ordering, and attempts to access another user’s conversation.
- Deploy over HTTPS and monitor. Confirm production domain and security settings, and review operational behavior after launch.
