A karaoke machine combines a song’s backing track with a singer’s microphone, mixes the two, and sends the sound to speakers. Lyrics take a separate display route—often to a built-in screen or a TV—so the video connection does not always carry the audio. At home, you can use an all-in-one unit or connect a playback device, mixer, microphones, and speakers.
How a karaoke machine turns a song into a sing-along
The core process has two audio inputs: the instrumental or karaoke track and the singer’s microphone. A mixer—either a separate device or circuitry inside an all-in-one machine—balances their levels. It may also add vocal effects such as echo, then sends the combined sound to speakers. Lyrics appear on a screen so singers can follow the song. The audio path
Think of the sound path as backing track + microphone → mixer → speakers. You adjust the microphone level so the voice sits clearly over the music. Depending on the machine, you may also be able to adjust music level or vocal effects.

The lyric and video path
Lyrics are visual information, not a necessary part of the audio mix. A playback device may send video to a TV while sending audio separately to a mixer or speaker system. Some machines also have their own display. The physical connections and whether HDMI carries sound vary by model, so consult the manual before deciding where to route audio.

What equipment a home karaoke setup needs
An all-in-one machine bundles several functions into one enclosure, while a modular setup uses separate components. In the modular arrangement Singa describes, a phone or computer plays karaoke content; video goes to a TV over HDMI, while audio goes to a mixer. Why HDMI may show lyrics without playing the sound
HDMI often connects a karaoke device or playback device to a TV for lyrics and video, but its audio behavior is model-specific. The Singing Machine iSM2040 guide describes HDMI as a TV connection for lyrics and video. Its ISM9015 guide explicitly says the HDMI output is for video and lyrics only, with audio played elsewhere. In Singa’s modular arrangement, playback audio goes to the mixer while video goes to the TV. Read the exact model’s instructions and choose the audio destination before connecting everything.

Playback options and supported content vary by machine
Machines may play content from USB, Bluetooth, AUX, Wi-Fi, or an app, but those options are not standard across all models. For example, Singing Machine’s iSM2040 support guide lists USB playback, Bluetooth streaming, AUX input, microphone inputs, and HDMI output. It specifies MP4 video and MP3+G karaoke files for USB playback. The guide also advertises app access to a “100,000+ songs” catalog; that is a vendor-stated figure on a support page with no year stated, not an independently verified or permanent count. The page says unlimited access to the full catalog requires an optional in-app subscription, and certain plans include a 30-day trial. Check the current app terms for availability and plan details.

Bluetooth microphones can introduce singing delay
Bluetooth is commonly used to stream playback audio, but that does not mean a Bluetooth microphone connection is ideal for singing. Singa warns that microphone audio sent directly to a TV over Bluetooth can have enough delay to make singing difficult. It recommends connecting microphones to a mixer or using a karaoke speaker with a built-in mixer. The cited guidance does not provide a measured latency figure, and the warning should not be read as meaning Bluetooth playback itself is unsuitable.

Choose based on the equipment you already own, the connections you need, and how much setup you want. There is no independent head-to-head performance test in the cited sources that establishes one approach as universally better.

An all-in-one machine
- Best fit: You want playback, microphone connections, mixing, and speakers bundled together, with less cabling.
- Check: Supported playback sources and formats, number and type of microphone connections, available controls and effects, display or TV output, and whether TV audio is supported.
A modular system
- Best fit: You want to use a phone or computer, select separate mixer and speakers, or connect karaoke playback to an existing audio system.
- Check: Compatibility among the playback device, mixer, microphones, speakers, and TV; the cable types each component needs; and whether audio and video take separate routes.
The iSM2040 is one documented example of an all-in-one-style system: its support page lists USB playback for MP4 and MP3+G, Bluetooth and AUX audio, HDMI to a TV for lyrics and video, microphone inputs, and two included wireless microphones. It is an example of the features a particular unit may bundle, not a template for every model. Confirm current accessories, supported formats, microphone compatibility, and TV-output behavior in the product’s current documentation.

Connect a modular setup in a sensible order
- Choose the playback source. Confirm that your phone or computer can access the karaoke content and that the chosen app, file, or connection works with your equipment.
- Set up the display path. Connect the playback device to the TV over HDMI if lyrics or video should appear there. Check the device manual to determine whether HDMI also carries audio.
- Connect playback audio to the mixer. Use an audio output and mixer input that are compatible. Singa’s example uses RCA audio, but other systems may use different connections.
- Connect the microphones to mixer inputs. Confirm the microphone type and connector match the mixer. In Singa’s example, microphones connect by XLR.
- Connect the mixer’s main output to the speakers or home audio system. Make sure the speakers are powered appropriately or that an amplifier is in the path for passive speakers.
- Set levels and check both paths. Play a track to confirm the music reaches the speakers and lyrics reach the display, then test each microphone and adjust its level in the mixer.
