If you’re locked out of an Amazon tablet, the fix depends on which lock is blocking you. For a forgotten lock-screen PIN or password, Amazon’s documented route is a reset from the lock screen that uses your Amazon account password and does not require a factory reset. If that option isn’t offered, or the prompt is for parental controls, the fallback is a factory reset, which erases content stored on the tablet. Amazon’s tablets run Fire OS, so the steps below apply to Fire tablets. Menu wording and eligibility can change between Fire OS versions, so if a label on your screen differs from the one shown here, follow the closest match.
First, identify which lock you’re facing
Amazon treats two different credentials as separate, and the recovery path for each is different.
- The device lock screen. This is the PIN or password you enter when you wake the tablet. It is the one you set during setup or in the security settings.
- The parental-controls password. This restricts what a child can open or buy. Amazon says it is different from the lock-screen password, so a correct lock-screen credential may not clear a parental-controls block.
Option 1: Reset a forgotten lock-screen PIN or password
Use this route first when the tablet asks for a lock-screen credential you can’t recall. Amazon’s Customer Service page Reset Lock Screen Password or PIN on Your Fire Tablet states: “Your device must be connected to the internet to reset your lock screen password or PIN.” Connect to Wi-Fi before you start.

- When the reset notification appears, select Reset Your PIN.
- Enter the password for your Amazon account. This is the account password, not the tablet’s lock-screen credential.
- Set a new PIN or password and confirm it.
If the Reset Your PIN option never appears, or you don’t know your Amazon account password, move to Option 2. If you can’t get past the notification, the lock-screen reset is not available on that device at that time.

Option 2: Factory reset from Settings
Use this route when the lock-screen reset isn’t offered and you can still reach the Settings menu. Amazon describes a factory reset as the fallback for these cases, and it has real consequences: it removes downloaded content, including in-app purchases, returns the tablet to factory settings, and deregisters it from your Amazon account. The reset works on the tablet itself; the cited Amazon instructions do not describe purchases being deleted from your account.
- If the tablet has a microSD card, safely eject it first, as Amazon’s reset guidance advises.
- Swipe down twice from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings.
- Tap Settings.
- Choose Device Options.
- Choose Reset to Factory Defaults and confirm.
Option 3: Factory reset from Recovery Mode
Use Recovery Mode when the tablet is frozen or Settings can’t be opened. This wipes the device the same way a factory reset does, so the consequences in Option 2 apply here too.

- Stay connected with family and friends - ask Alexa to make video calls to friends and family or download apps like Zoom.
- Turn the tablet off completely.
- Press and hold the power button together with the volume down button. Amazon says this combination works on most devices.
- Use the volume buttons to move to Wipe data/factory reset.
- Press the power button to confirm.
Button combinations vary by model. If the combination above doesn’t open Recovery Mode on your tablet, look up the instructions for your exact model on Amazon’s support pages rather than trying combinations at random.

Forgotten parental-controls password
Amazon states that a forgotten parental-controls password requires a factory reset to restore full access. The lock-screen reset in Option 1 should not be assumed to clear it. If the restriction is a parental-controls block, go directly to Option 2 or Option 3 once you have decided you can accept the data loss.

After the reset
- Register the tablet to your Amazon account again. It cannot be used until it is registered.
- Follow the setup screens and create a new lock-screen PIN or password.
- If you set up parental controls before, you will need to configure them again.

When none of these routes work
There is no official bypass for the lock screen, and Amazon’s documented recovery route depends on the Amazon account password. Avoid third-party unlock utilities or anything that promises to defeat the lock; they can’t be verified as safe and are not part of Amazon’s documented process. If you don’t have access to the Amazon account password, the official path is Amazon account recovery or Amazon device support, which can help with account access but cannot guarantee that your tablet will be unlocked.
