Choose and test a microphone in Settings > System > Sound > Input. Pair a Bluetooth headset first, then select it there. If you landed on Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices, that page is for phone and tablet integration—not Windows microphone selection.
Set up and test a microphone in Windows 11
- Connect the microphone. Plug in a wired microphone or connect it as directed by its manufacturer. For Bluetooth, turn on Bluetooth on the PC and put the headset or microphone into pairing mode; the control is specific to each device. In Windows, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices > Add device, choose the Bluetooth option, and follow the prompts. You can also pair from Quick Settings. Keep the device near the PC while pairing. Microsoft’s microphone setup instructions note: “If it’s a Bluetooth microphone, select Add device and follow the prompts.”
- Select the recording input. Go to Settings > System > Sound and find the microphone under Input. Select the device you intend to use. Pairing a Bluetooth headset does not necessarily make it the selected recording input.
- Run the Windows microphone test. Open the selected input’s properties, choose Start test, and speak normally. Choose Stop test, then Play to listen to the sample. Adjust Input volume if the recording is too quiet or too loud.
- Allow microphone access. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Turn on Microphone access and Let apps access your microphone. Enable access for the relevant Store app if it appears in the list. For desktop programs, turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone. Microsoft explains that app use requires permissions in Privacy & security settings.
- Check the app’s input choice. Open the call, recording, or voice app and select the same microphone in its audio settings. App controls vary. A browser site may also need permission in the browser and for that specific website.
What “Bluetooth & devices” and “Mobile devices” do
Bluetooth & devices is where you pair and manage Bluetooth hardware. The Mobile devices section manages connected phones and tablets and related integration features, such as syncing, hotspot, or tethering. To choose a Windows recording device, use Settings > System > Sound > Input; the Mobile devices page does not select a microphone. Microsoft describes phone integration separately from mobile-device management and its microphone setup path. Those instructions do not establish Mobile devices as a way to use a phone’s built-in microphone as a Windows input.
Troubleshoot a microphone Windows or an app cannot use
The microphone is missing from Sound > Input
- Reconnect the device. For Bluetooth, check that it is powered on and charged, within range, and in pairing mode; make sure Bluetooth is on in Windows.
- If it is not discoverable, check Windows Bluetooth device discovery settings. Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance describes Default and Advanced discovery levels.
- If the device appears but will not connect, remove it and add it again. Also check airplane mode, toggle Bluetooth, and consider the Bluetooth troubleshooter or current manufacturer drivers. Microsoft lists configuration, drivers, the device, range, and battery among possible causes.
The Windows test records no sound
- Confirm the intended microphone is selected under Input and check any physical mute switch on the headset or microphone.
- Run the test again and adjust Input volume. If Windows still does not detect the microphone, follow Microsoft’s microphone troubleshooting guidance, including its audio-driver steps.
The Windows test works, but an app cannot hear you
- Check the microphone access switches in Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone, including the desktop-app switch where applicable.
- In the app, verify its selected input and any app-level microphone permission. For browser-based calls, check the browser and website permissions too.
Voice typing does not hear speech
Check the selected device and input level under Settings > System > Sound > Input, and make sure microphone access is enabled. Microsoft’s voice-typing guidance also suggests trying a headset or external microphone if the built-in microphone is inadequate.

Bluetooth LE Audio is a separate compatibility question
Ordinary Bluetooth pairing does not confirm support for Bluetooth LE Audio. Microsoft says LE Audio requires Windows 11 version 22H2 or newer, compatible Bluetooth hardware, an audio codec, and manufacturer drivers. If the device’s settings do not show Use LE Audio when available, Microsoft says support may be limited by hardware or by missing or incompatible drivers. See Microsoft’s Bluetooth LE Audio guidance.

How to choose between microphones already available
Compare the options by whether Windows lists them under Input, whether the intended app can access them, and whether the test sample has a usable level. A Bluetooth headset needs pairing and connection; a wired or built-in microphone has different connection requirements. If LE Audio specifically matters, compatibility depends on the PC, headset, codec, and drivers. No universal compatibility list covers every microphone and app.
