Outlook 365 can refer to either Classic Outlook for Windows or New Outlook for Windows. They look similar, but they do not save window sizes in the same way.
For the main Outlook window, the usual fix is to restore it from maximized mode, drag its border to the required size, and close Outlook normally. Classic Outlook can also reset a damaged window position through the Registry. New Outlook does not reliably preserve the size of individual pop-out messages, so the Classic Outlook fixes do not all apply.
First check which Outlook you have
Microsoft 365 currently includes two separate Windows applications:
- Classic Outlook for Windows: the traditional desktop Office application.
- New Outlook for Windows: the newer Microsoft Store/WebView2-based application, generally available since August 2024.
Open Outlook and look for a New Outlook switch or label near the upper-right corner. You can also check the application listed in Windows search. This distinction matters most when you are trying to make separate email, reply, or compose windows remember their dimensions.

Resize the main Outlook window
These steps change the Windows application window, not the Outlook ribbon, Reading Pane, or message-text size.
- Open Outlook.
- If it fills the entire screen, click Restore Down—the middle button beside the Close button in the upper-right corner.
- Move the pointer to an edge or corner of the Outlook window.
- When the pointer changes to a double-headed arrow, drag the border until the window has the width and height you want.
- Close Outlook normally and reopen it to test whether Windows and Outlook retained the new size.
A maximized window cannot be manually resized until it has been restored. Windows also treats snapped windows differently from ordinary resizable windows, so avoid dragging Outlook to an edge or selecting a Snap layout while testing the saved size.

Keyboard shortcuts for Outlook window sizing
| Shortcut | What it does |

| Windows + Shift + Down Arrow | Restores a maximized or snapped window. |
| Windows + Left Arrow or Right Arrow | Snaps Outlook to the selected side of the screen. |

| Alt + Spacebar | Opens the active window’s system menu. |
For normal resizing, use Restore Down and drag a corner. Snap shortcuts change the window’s layout rather than simply saving a custom width and height.
Make Classic Outlook remember the main window size
Classic Outlook does not have a File > Options field where you can type a default window width and height. Instead, resize the main window and close Outlook normally so it can save the window state.
- Restore the Outlook window if it is maximized.
- Resize it by dragging an edge or corner.
- Close every Outlook window.
- Start Outlook again and check the result.
If multiple Outlook windows are open, close the one with the preferred dimensions last. Classic Office applications can save window information as they close. If a different Outlook window closes afterward, it may overwrite the size you wanted to keep.
Resize a separate email or compose window in Classic Outlook
The main Outlook window and a message opened in its own window have separate sizing information. Changing the main window therefore does not necessarily change the size of opened emails, replies, or new messages.

- Open an email in its own window, or start a reply or new message.
- Click Restore Down if the message window is maximized.
- Drag an edge or corner to set the desired dimensions.
- Hold Ctrl while clicking the window’s Close button.
The Ctrl + Close technique is commonly used in Classic Outlook to save the size and position of future pop-out message windows. It is not a dependable solution for New Outlook.
New Outlook: pop-out windows may not remember their size
New Outlook supports multiple windows, but it currently does not preserve the dimensions of reading, reply, or compose windows in the same way as Classic Outlook. You may resize a pop-out message, close it, and find that the next message opens at a default size.
The Classic Outlook Ctrl + Close technique and the Classic Outlook Frame Registry values are based on the older Office application architecture. They should not be treated as fixes for New Outlook. If retaining a particular pop-out size is essential, switch to Classic Outlook if it is still available in your Microsoft 365 installation.
Reset the Classic Outlook main window through the Registry
Use this when the main Classic Outlook window opens off-screen, at an unusable size, or refuses to retain a manually selected size. Registry editing can affect application behavior, so make a backup first.

- Press Windows + R, type
regedit, and press Enter. - In Registry Editor, go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice16.0OutlookOffice Explorer - Right-click Office Explorer, choose Export, and save a backup of the key.
- In the right pane, find the value named Frame.
- Delete only the Frame value.
- Close Registry Editor and start Classic Outlook.
The Frame value stores the main Classic Outlook window’s size and position. Removing it causes Outlook to recreate its window-state information with default dimensions and positioning.
Important: Do not delete the entire Office Explorer key. This procedure is intended for Classic Outlook and is not a supported reset method for New Outlook.
Reset separate Classic Outlook message windows
If only opened or composed messages have an incorrect size, the relevant setting may be under:

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice16.0OutlookMessageClose Outlook, back up the key, and delete the Frame value under Message if it exists. Restart Classic Outlook and test a separate message window.
Other Outlook dialogs can use different subkeys. For example, the Advanced Find window may store its frame information under:

Do not use /resetnavpane as a general size reset
The command is:
outlook.exe /resetnavpaneRun it from Windows + R after closing Outlook. However, this command resets Navigation Pane customizations. It is mainly used for startup problems involving the Outlook window, folders, or a corrupted Navigation Pane—not as a documented command for resetting the application’s width and height.
Running it can remove Navigation Pane arrangements, including Favorites-related customizations. Use it only when you specifically need to rebuild the Navigation Pane.

If the Outlook window has the correct physical dimensions but its text, ribbon, or buttons look too large or too small, resizing the window will not solve the problem.
Change Classic Outlook’s Office display setting
In Classic Outlook, open:
File > Options > GeneralUnder User Interface options, review the multiple-display setting:

Compatibility mode can help when Outlook controls appear incorrectly sized across multiple monitors. Restart Outlook after changing the setting.
Change Windows display scaling
Windows controls overall display scaling at:
Settings > System > Display > ScaleThis changes the apparent size of Outlook text and controls across Windows. It does not reset Outlook’s saved window width or height.
Change Reading Pane zoom
To change the size of message text in the Reading Pane, use the zoom control at the bottom-right of the pane. In current Outlook for Microsoft 365, the Zoom While Reading dialog includes Remember my preference for Microsoft 365 subscribers.
Reading Pane zoom affects message magnification only. It does not make the Outlook application window larger.

After docking, undocking, or changing monitor arrangements, Windows may restore Outlook according to the monitor connection rather than its previous dimensions.
In Windows 11, check:
Settings > System > Display > Multiple displaysEnable Remember window locations based on monitor connection when the option is available. This helps Windows place applications consistently when the same monitors are connected or disconnected.

FAQ
Why does Outlook keep opening at the wrong size?
In Classic Outlook, resize the restored window and close Outlook normally. If several Outlook windows are open, close the correctly sized one last. If the problem persists, back up the Registry and delete the main-window Frame value under HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice16.0OutlookOffice Explorer.
How do I resize an Outlook email window?
In Classic Outlook, open the message in its own window, restore it if maximized, drag its border, then hold Ctrl while clicking Close. The message-window size is stored separately from the main Outlook window.
Does Ctrl + Close work in New Outlook?
Not reliably. New Outlook currently does not preserve pop-out message sizing in the same way as Classic Outlook. If persistent pop-out dimensions are important, use Classic Outlook where available.

What Registry value resets the Classic Outlook window?
The value is named Frame. For the main window, it is commonly under HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice16.0OutlookOffice Explorer. Delete only the value after exporting the key as a backup.
Will /resetnavpane fix Outlook’s window size?
No. outlook.exe /resetnavpane rebuilds Navigation Pane customizations. It is not a general window-dimension reset and may remove Favorites and other pane arrangements.
Why is Outlook text too large even though the window size is correct?
Check Windows display scaling at Settings > System > Display > Scale. In Classic Outlook, also check File > Options > General and the Optimize for best appearance or Optimize for compatibility setting. For message text only, adjust Reading Pane zoom.
The Bottom Line
For the main Outlook window, restore it from maximized mode, drag the border to the required size, and close Outlook normally. In Classic Outlook, close the correctly sized window last; use Ctrl + Close for separate message windows. If Classic Outlook’s main window is corrupted, delete its backed-up Frame value under the Office Explorer Registry key. New Outlook does not currently offer the same reliable persistent sizing for pop-out messages, and /resetnavpane is a Navigation Pane reset—not a window-size fix.
