To pay someone using your Venmo balance, start a person-to-person payment in the Venmo app and check the funding method before you send it. If you have access to a Venmo balance and it covers the full amount, Venmo uses the balance. If you cannot use a balance or it is too small, choose a linked payment method instead; you do not have to add money to Venmo first.
Pay someone from your Venmo balance
-
Open the Venmo app and start a payment to the intended person. Check the recipient’s username or contact details carefully.

If your Venmo balance is unavailable

In the mobile app, go to Me > Settings gear > Identity Verification and follow the prompts. Venmo explains the process in its Identity Verification help page.
If your balance is not available or does not cover the full payment, use a linked bank account or card. You do not need to transfer money into Venmo before paying another Venmo user; see Venmo’s information about adding money to your balance.

If a payment is pending
A payment sent to an unverified phone number or email address may remain pending until the recipient claims it. Venmo says you can take back an unclaimed payment; if neither person claims it nor takes it back, it expires after 30 days. See Venmo’s guidance on pending personal payments.
These balance rules apply to payments to other people, not every Venmo checkout. Merchant checkout can have different funding behavior; see Venmo’s merchant payment information.
