The number of pins on a RAM module depends on two things: its DDR generation and whether it is a full-size DIMM or a compact SO-DIMM. There is no single pin count for all memory. Read the module’s label or part number to identify both, then match them against the pin-count table below. A pin count on its own is not enough to confirm that a module will fit or work in your computer.
Pin counts by DDR generation
Each DDR generation uses a fixed pin count for full-size DIMMs and another for SO-DIMMs. The figures below are Crucial’s published product specifications. The source page does not show a publication year, so the values should be read as current manufacturer specifications rather than dated figures.
| DDR generation | DIMM (full-size) pins | SO-DIMM (compact) pins | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| DDR | 184 | 200 | Crucial specification table; year not stated |
| DDR2 | 240 | 200 | Crucial specification table; year not stated |
| DDR3 | 240 | 204 | Crucial specification table; year not stated |
| DDR4 | 288 | 260 | Crucial specification table; year not stated |
| DDR5 | 288 | 262 | Crucial specification table; year not stated |
Why the pin count alone can mislead
Several counts repeat across generations, so reading only the number can point you to the wrong type of module:
- 200 pins appears for both DDR and DDR2 SO-DIMMs. Only the generation marking or part number separates them.
- 240 pins appears for both DDR2 and DDR3 DIMMs. Again, the generation decides which one you have.
- 288 pins appears for both DDR4 and DDR5 DIMMs. The SO-DIMM counts differ (260 and 262), but the DIMM counts do not.
A count of 288 therefore tells you it is a full-size DDR4 or DDR5 module, not which one. Confirm the generation before you rely on the number.

How to identify your module
-
Read the label. If you can see the module safely, find the sticker or printed part number. Note the manufacturer and the full part number.
-
Look up the part number. Search that exact number in the manufacturer’s specification pages. Some manufacturers publish decoders that translate parts of their codes into technology and module type. Kingston’s decoder, for example, distinguishes UDIMM from SODIMM in its DDR5 part numbers. These codes are specific to Kingston, so do not apply them to another brand.

-
Identify the generation and form factor. Record the DDR generation (DDR, DDR2, DDR3, DDR4 or DDR5) and whether the module is a DIMM or SO-DIMM. Laptops usually take SO-DIMMs and desktops usually take DIMMs, but the computer’s own specification should decide this.

Match both values to the table. Find the generation row and the form-factor column. The module’s notch can help you tell modules apart, but a similar appearance does not establish compatibility, because generations and slots are keyed differently.

Checking compatibility before you buy
If you are replacing or adding memory, the pin count is only one physical detail. Before buying, confirm three things:
- DDR generation. The computer or motherboard must support the same generation as the module.
- Form factor. The module must be a DIMM or a SO-DIMM that matches the memory slots.
- System limits. Check the computer’s or motherboard’s specification, or the memory maker’s compatibility tool, for any capacity or module constraints. Kingston’s support pages direct users to its configurator and recommend confirming compatibility before purchase.
Speed and capacity are not set by the pin count, so do not choose a module on that basis alone. If you do not know your computer model, look up its memory specification using the model name or motherboard model printed on the system or its documentation.

Safety before you remove a module
For a desktop, shut the computer down and unplug it before removing or handling memory. Kingston’s installation guidance gives the same instruction. If the module label cannot be read without removing it, do that only after the computer is powered off and unplugged.
