Choose based on how you want to run an agent and which provider you want to use—not on a presumed coding-performance ranking. The official documentation reviewed for Claude Code, Qwen Code, and Codex describes different product surfaces, setup paths, controls, and billing models; it does not establish a controlled head-to-head winner or a comparable total-cost ranking.
How do Claude Code, Qwen Code, and Codex differ?
They are software coding agents, but the documented offerings are not identical interfaces to compare as if they were a single model benchmark. Claude Code is documented as a local development tool. Qwen Code is an open-source agent with terminal use and documentation pointing to desktop, web, and editor interfaces. Codex materials here describe a managed harness for running agents through OpenAI’s API.
| Agent and surface covered | Documented workflow | Setup and provider options | Control model described |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Code | Local development tool with interactive and print modes; supports piping, continuing sessions, and model selection. | Anthropic Console with active billing, Claude Pro or Max, or enterprise platforms including Amazon Bedrock and Google Vertex AI. Documented npm installation requires Node.js 18+. | CLI reference documents permission modes and allowed or disallowed tools. |
| Qwen Code | Terminal coding agent; documentation also points to desktop, web, and editor interfaces. | Alibaba ModelStudio, third-party providers, or custom providers. The manual npm installation route requires Node.js 22 or later. | Quickstart describes reading and editing project files, running commands, and asking for approval before file modification. |
| Codex | Managed Codex harness described in OpenAI developer materials; can execute code, edit files, connect to MCP servers, and produce artifacts. | The materials describe OpenAI API model use; the model is billed at selected API rates, with standard rates for tools and hosted sandboxes. | Harness can operate in a sandbox. This does not by itself establish safety equivalence with another product’s permissions. |
These descriptions identify workflow and setup differences, not which agent writes better code. The relevant official documentation is Anthropic’s Claude Code setup and CLI documentation, Qwen Code documentation, and OpenAI’s Codex guide.

Choose Claude Code if you want a local development workflow with several documented account routes
Claude Code is a reasonable fit if you want a terminal-oriented tool for local development and prefer to authenticate through an Anthropic account or a supported enterprise cloud platform. Its CLI offers interactive and print modes, piping, session continuation, model selection, tool allowlists and blocklists, and permission modes. Those options can help you shape a workflow, but the documentation does not show that they make it more capable than the alternatives.
#1 Best Overall
The setup guide lists macOS 10.15+, Ubuntu 20.04+ or Debian 10+, and Windows through WSL or Git for Windows, with at least 4 GB of RAM. Its documented npm route requires Node.js 18 or later. The guide also lists automatic updates and alternate installation methods. Because installation and plan details can change, check the current setup instructions before installing.
Choose Qwen Code if provider choice is central to your setup
Qwen Code’s documentation explicitly offers Alibaba ModelStudio, third-party providers, and custom providers. It supports terminal use and points readers to other interfaces, including desktop, web, and editor options. Install routes listed in the docs include a standalone installer, npm, and Homebrew; the manual npm route requires Node.js 22 or later.
Do not follow older setup advice that assumes Qwen OAuth is available. Qwen’s quickstart says OAuth was discontinued on April 15, 2026. Follow its current instructions for a supported provider or custom configuration instead. The quickstart also describes approval before file modifications. See the Qwen Code quickstart and overview and its authentication guidance.

The Codex surface covered here is OpenAI’s managed harness, which can run code, edit files, connect to MCP servers, and produce artifacts in a sandbox. It is most directly relevant if your integration is built around the OpenAI API and you want that managed runtime. The cited API materials do not describe every Codex product or subscription, so do not treat their billing details as universal Codex pricing. See the Codex guide.

How should you compare setup and control?
Start with your development environment, then verify the exact install route and authentication option you intend to use. The prerequisites below are tied to the documented routes, not a claim that every installation method has identical requirements.
- Match the environment. For Claude Code, check the listed operating-system support and RAM requirement; for Qwen Code, check the Node.js 22+ requirement if using manual npm installation. Consult each product’s current setup page for other installation routes.
- Choose the account or provider first. Claude Code lists Anthropic Console billing, Claude Pro or Max, and enterprise routes including Bedrock and Vertex AI. Qwen Code lists ModelStudio, third-party, and custom providers; its quickstart says OAuth ended on April 15, 2026. The Codex API materials describe OpenAI API billing.
- Inspect how actions are controlled. Claude Code documents permission modes and tool allow/block lists; Qwen Code describes approval before file changes; the Codex harness can operate in a sandbox. These are different mechanisms, and the cited descriptions do not demonstrate that they offer equivalent guarantees.
- Try the workflow on a project you can safely inspect. Check how the agent handles the files and commands you care about, and whether its approval and execution behavior suits your workflow. Official feature descriptions alone cannot predict your results.
What does each option cost?
The available figures are not directly comparable: the documentation describes subscription or account routes for some surfaces and token-based API rates for another. An API rate is not the same as a subscription price or a complete estimate of project costs.
Rank #4
OpenAI’s pricing page listed GPT-5.3-Codex at $1.75 per million input tokens, $0.175 per million cached input tokens, and $14 per million output tokens in its standard fast-mode table at the time of the cited page. Those are model API rates, not the price of every Codex product, and the Codex API overview says tool and hosted-sandbox usage also has standard rates. Check the current OpenAI API pricing page and Codex API guidance before estimating usage.
Claude Code documentation lists multiple authentication routes, including a Claude subscription and Console billing, while Qwen Code documents multiple provider options. The sources cited here do not supply a like-for-like estimate of total costs across all three agents. Compare the exact plan or provider you will use, including model usage and any runtime, tool, or sandbox charges, rather than choosing on a cheapest-overall claim.

Is there a performance winner?
Not on the evidence available here. The official pages describe product capabilities and setup, not a controlled comparison using the same tasks, models, settings, and evaluation criteria. A universal recommendation based on coding quality would go beyond what those sources establish. To make a decision, prioritize the workflow, provider configuration, approval behavior, and billing basis that fit your work.
