Barry Zielinski’s September 11, 2026 TechRadar Pro Perspectives article argues that defense capability depends on how well technologies, information, people, and infrastructure work together—not just on the performance of any single platform. Because it is a perspective piece, its claims are an argument about integration, not independently measured operational findings. Read the article.
Why integration matters more than any single system
Zielinski’s central point is that a capable sensor, autonomous system, or other advanced technology cannot deliver its full value in isolation. Its contribution depends on whether information can move securely to the people and systems that need it, and whether that information can support decisions and action across the wider operational environment.
That makes capability a connected system: technology and data rely on communications and networks; command systems and people must be able to use what those networks carry. The article presents this integration across domains as the source of potential operational advantage, rather than treating a new platform as a complete capability by itself.

Technology, information, and command
The article names AI, autonomous systems, advanced sensors, cyber capability, and space assets as technologies whose value is linked to networks, data, command systems, and people. The point is not that these elements are interchangeable, but that their operational contribution depends on how effectively they connect with the larger environment.

Secure and resilient foundations
Reliable communications, trusted data, secure networks, and resilient infrastructure are presented as prerequisites for using advanced technologies effectively. In Zielinski’s framing, technology cannot compensate for poor-quality information or infrastructure that cannot reliably carry it. Security and resilience therefore belong in the foundations of capability, not as afterthoughts added once a system is deployed.
Infrastructure across domains
Communications, transport, energy, and digital systems all contribute to operations across land, sea, air, cyber, and space. As an illustration, the article points to runway infrastructure in the Falkland Islands as part of long-term strategic capability and readiness. It does not provide measurements or further operational detail about that example, so it should be understood as an illustration of infrastructure’s role rather than evidence of a quantified outcome.

Automation should support human work
Zielinski describes automation as a means to reduce routine work and improve efficiency, not as an objective in itself. The examples in the article are predictive maintenance, autonomous monitoring, automated network management, and logistics optimization. Each is framed as a way to support people and broader operations.
That distinction matters: the article does not argue that automation replaces human capability. Its stated principle is that “The most effective technologies do not replace human capability – they amplify it.” The value of automation, in this view, depends on how well it fits into the work, information flows, and decisions around it.

Moving innovation from demonstration into operations
A further challenge is adoption. The article argues that innovation must move beyond demonstrations and pilots into operational use. That transition calls for collaboration among government, industry, academia, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and the Armed Forces.
Zielinski does not prescribe a procurement process, name a supplier, or specify how organizations should manage that transition. His broader claim is that integration and collaboration are necessary for innovation to become usable capability, and that secure, reliable information flows at pace shape how effectively it can translate into operational advantage.

What the argument establishes—and what it does not
The article offers a framework for thinking about defense capability: assess not only individual technologies, but also the communications, data, networks, command systems, people, and infrastructure that let them work together. It also emphasizes security, resilience, human support, and adoption beyond pilots.

Those claims would require evidence beyond this perspective article. Its contribution is the integration thesis: “The value of any individual technology is linked to how effectively it connects with the wider operational environment.”
