A 2023 laboratory study showed that iron-sulfide veneers resembling proposed Ediacaran “death masks” can form during decay under some conditions. The experiment supports the mechanism’s feasibility; it does not prove that this process preserved every Ediacaran fossil.
What is an Ediacaran “death mask”?
The Ediacara biota are soft-bodied organisms known from fossils dating to the Neoproterozoic. Because their bodies lacked hard shells or skeletons, their preservation as surface impressions raises a chemical question: how could a decaying organism leave a durable outline in sediment?
The death-mask hypothesis proposes that microbial mats and early mineral precipitation helped preserve the surfaces of buried organisms. In one version of the mechanism, iron sulfide forms as a thin veneer at the boundary between a carcass and sediment, retaining an impression as the tissue decays.

How did the experiment test the idea?
Gibson, Schiffbauer and Wallace tested whether bioavailable iron could contribute to iron-sulfide veneers at sediment–carcass interfaces. They ran decay experiments with sea anemones and sea slugs under simulated sedimentary conditions with different initial iron concentrations.

To supply iron, the researchers used fine zero-valent iron powder. That choice let them vary the available iron in a controlled laboratory system, but it did not directly recreate the presumed Ediacaran sedimentary environment.
What did the researchers observe?
After 28 days of decay, some experimental specimens had iron-sulfide and probable oxide veneers. The paper reports coherent iron-sulfide veneers on sea-anemone tissue in treatment groups with 1.0%–5.0% initial iron by weight. In this experimental system, veneers formed in groups above 1.0 weight percent iron. These are laboratory treatment conditions and observations, not measurements of iron in the ancient ocean or a universal threshold for fossilization.

The authors describe their result as the first convincing experimental laboratory production of “death masks” composed of iron-sulfide and probable oxide veneers. That description refers to the experimental veneers; it does not mean the researchers recreated Ediacaran fossils in every respect.

The study indicates that iron was required for this style of preservation in the model, but its presence by itself did not ensure a veneer. The authors also identify seawater sulfate, sulfate-reducing microbes and mineral nucleation sites as factors that may help iron-sulfide minerals form. Tissue properties matter too: the researchers point to tissue histology as a possible influence on the outcome.

- Fossil replica of a Mesozoic echinoderm measuring approximately 4cm (1.25")
- Sturdy fossil replica made from resin is designed to last through heavy classroom and laboratory use
- This echinoderm is related to the sea urchins and starfish of today
- Perfect for use in the classroom during lessons on fossils and paleontology
- hough the echinoderm's durable test, or shell, is often preserved, the more fragile spines are rarely preserved
This helps explain why the result is not simply “more iron makes a fossil.” Veneer formation depends on the chemical and biological setting at the tissue–sediment interface, including conditions that support mineral production and nucleation.
What does this mean for Ediacaran fossil preservation?
The experiments provide a laboratory analogue showing that a proposed death-mask mechanism is chemically feasible. They also suggest that it may work across a range of conditions rather than requiring one narrowly defined “perfect storm.” Neither finding establishes how often the process occurred in nature.

The result is not an exclusive explanation for Ediacaran soft-tissue preservation. The study’s authors note that death masks need not account for every fossil or be the only preservation mechanism. The experiment tested one mechanism; it did not recreate an entire Ediacaran ecosystem or establish that every fossil formed through the same sequence.

- Iron source: Zero-valent iron powder supplied bioavailable iron, but it was not a direct match for the sedimentary iron thought to have been present in Ediacaran environments.
- Mineral comparison: Chemistry World reports the researchers’ caveat that the mineral precursors produced in the experiment may differ from those associated with genuine fossil specimens.
- Scope: The results demonstrate formation in a laboratory analogue, not the prevalence of death masks among fossils or the full preservation history of any particular fossil.
Sean McMahon, a palaeobiologist at the University of Edinburgh who was not involved in the study, told Chemistry World: “It’s really important to understand why these fossils are preserved the way that they are.”
