A Wi-Fi 7 network interface card (NIC) moves data through two distinct paths: across the computer’s host interface to the wireless device, then over the air to an access point. The operating system and driver prepare and manage traffic; the device’s MAC and PHY handle wireless framing and radio transmission. The receive path reverses those steps, though the exact division of work varies by device.
Start with the boundary between the computer and the radio
When an application sends data, the computer’s network stack prepares it for delivery through the network. The operating system passes work toward the wireless interface, where its driver and the NIC coordinate queues, transmission requests, and status. That host-side connection is not the Wi-Fi link: it is the path between the computer and its wireless device.
A host interface is not the over-the-air link
One documented Wi-Fi 7 module uses PCIe signals on an M.2 design. That is an example of a particular module, not a guarantee about every Wi-Fi adapter. Before replacing or adding a module, check the device’s keying and physical fit, whether the computer supports that slot, antenna connections, operating-system and driver support, and applicable local radio regulations.

Those implementation details depend on the device and its driver, so the useful general model is that the host stack and driver hand off traffic and control information to the wireless device.

The driver and device divide the work
In Linux’s mac80211 model, the operating system’s wireless subsystem can prepare frames and pass them to a device driver with transmission controls; the driver and device return status. The Linux Kernel documentation describes the general frame handoff this way: frames passed between mac80211 and the driver begin with the IEEE 802.11 header and contain the same octets sent over the air, except that hardware should calculate the frame check sequence (FCS).
That is a useful view of a software MAC, not a promise that every adapter performs each operation in the same place. Some implementations offload more work to firmware or hardware. Linux’s documentation explicitly allows exceptions such as hardware encryption and decryption offload and hardware fragmentation. A device’s division of labor is an implementation choice; Wi-Fi 7 does not prescribe one internal NIC block diagram.

The MAC organizes wireless frames and access
The Medium Access Control layer, or MAC, organizes data into 802.11 frames and coordinates use of the shared wireless medium. At a high level, it handles link access and mechanisms such as acknowledgments and retries. On a Wi-Fi 7 device, MAC processing may be distributed across host software, firmware, and hardware.

Multi-Link Operation coordinates links
Wi-Fi 7 includes Multi-Link Operation (MLO), which belongs to MAC and link coordination. MLO does not mean every Wi-Fi 7 client always transmits over all available bands at once. What links a station and access point can use, and how they operate, depends on both devices’ capabilities and the selected operating mode. Linux mac80211 documentation includes MLO-aware controls, and a technical preview of a Wi-Fi 7 reference book covers MLO and multi-link device data-plane concepts.

The PHY turns the frame into a radio transmission
The Physical Layer, or PHY, encodes and decodes the radio transmission. On transmit, it converts the prepared wireless data into a signal suitable for radio hardware; on receive, it interprets the incoming signal and recovers data for MAC processing. The antenna and radio channel complete the path between the NIC and the access point.
IEEE 802.11be-2024 defines enhancements to both the MAC and PHY. IEEE Standards Association describes the standard as supporting at least one operating mode capable of a maximum throughput of at least 30 Gbit/s, measured at the MAC data service access point (SAP), with carrier-frequency operation between 1 and 7.250 GHz. This is a standards capability figure at a specified measurement point, not a typical application download rate or a guarantee for a particular client and access point.

Qualcomm’s reference guide says the Wi-Fi CERTIFIED 7 program launched in January 2024 and is built on IEEE 802.11be technology. Certification-program timing is distinct from a NIC’s internal design and does not establish what a particular computer or access point supports.

On receive, the path runs back to the host
An access point’s radio transmission reaches the NIC’s antenna and radio. The PHY recovers the transmission, and MAC processing interprets the frames and their link and delivery information. Depending on the design, hardware or firmware may filter, decrypt, reorder, or aggregate data before passing it through the driver to the operating system’s network stack and then to the relevant application.

As on transmit, this is a conceptual pipeline rather than a fixed order of silicon blocks. Some processing may happen in the driver or host software; other work may be offloaded. The exact queueing, interrupt, and data-transfer details require documentation for the specific adapter and driver.
What changes from one Wi-Fi 7 NIC to another?
- Driver model: A SoftMAC design relies more on host software for MAC work; other implementations offload more to firmware or hardware.
- Crypto and fragmentation: Encryption, decryption, and fragmentation may be handled in software or offloaded to the device.
- Host connection and fit: A module’s bus, slot support, keying, and antenna connections determine whether it can be installed in a particular computer.
- Radio and antennas: Radio-chain and antenna arrangements, supported bands, and channel capabilities are product-specific and subject to local regulations.
- MLO behavior: Supported links and operating modes depend on the client and access point, not just the Wi-Fi 7 label.
- Queueing and processor assignment: These are implementation and platform details. Microsoft’s VMMQ documentation describes RSS-based processor distribution for its documented virtualized-NIC context; it is not a universal description of the Wi-Fi 7 receive path.
How to interpret Wi-Fi 7 speed claims
Keep the measurement point attached to any throughput number. IEEE’s 30 Gbit/s figure is a maximum capability defined at the MAC SAP. A PHY rate, MAC throughput, and application throughput describe different stages and are not interchangeable. Actual performance depends on the client and access point, their capabilities and operating mode, and radio conditions. A standards maximum alone cannot predict an everyday download rate.
