molluSCAN-eye monitors water conditions by attaching small sensors to living bivalves, such as mussels or oysters, and tracking how their shells open and close. The system sends those behavior measurements for remote analysis. It can signal that conditions may be affecting the animals, but the available evidence does not show that it identifies a particular pollutant or measures its concentration.
How the mollusks detect changing conditions
Bivalves naturally open and close their shells while feeding and responding to their surroundings. molluSCAN-eye attaches small micro-electromagnets to the two shell valves and measures changes in the distance between them. Those movements turn ordinary animal behavior into a stream of monitoring data.
The company says its system can track more than 10 physiological and behavioral parameters each day, including how long shells remain open, maximum opening, contraction speed, agitation, growth, spawning, and biological rhythms. The measurements are indicators of the animals’ responses; they are not, by themselves, a chemical analysis of the water.

How the data reaches monitoring teams
- Instrument the animals. Small sensors are attached to the shells of bivalves placed in a submerged cage.
- Collect movement data. A nearby waterproof electronics module processes the sensor readings.
- Transmit readings. A cable connects the underwater module to surface equipment, which relays data to a server.
- Review results remotely. Clients access online assessments rather than needing to watch the animals continuously.
A 2024 New Atlas report describes a unit containing 16 mollusks. The company’s product page says equipment can remain deployed at sea for more than 3.5 years without maintenance; that is a vendor-reported capability, not an independently verified service-life guarantee.

What a biological signal can—and cannot—tell you
A change in shell behavior can serve as an early warning that an animal’s environment has changed or is causing stress. The signal is biologically meaningful because it reflects an organism’s response, but it is not pollutant-specific: the evidence available here does not establish that a valve movement can identify which contaminant is present or determine its concentration.
That makes the system different from a targeted chemical assay. It may help monitoring teams notice biological disturbance between other tests, but it should not be treated as a substitute for laboratory analysis when the question is which substance is present and at what level.

How the approach compares with conventional monitoring
| Monitoring approach | What it measures | What the result indicates | Evidence and limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| molluSCAN-eye | Shell movement and other bivalve behavior, according to the company | An organism’s response to changing conditions; not a named pollutant or its concentration | A 2016 peer-reviewed review discusses HFNI bivalve biosensors for marine monitoring and ecotoxicological research. It does not validate every current product-performance claim. |
| In-situ physicochemical sensors | A targeted physical or chemical parameter, depending on the sensor | The value of the measured parameter | The company claims molluSCAN-eye is 10 to 100 times more sensitive than in-situ physicochemical sensors. The reviewed evidence does not provide an independent head-to-head validation of that comparison. |
| Laboratory chemical analysis | The substances and measurements included in the chosen analysis | Evidence about specified chemicals in a collected sample | The sources cited here do not establish a direct product comparison or a sampling schedule for laboratory testing. |
The practical choice depends on the monitoring question. An organism-based signal and a targeted chemical measurement answer different questions; a monitoring program may need both rather than treating them as interchangeable.

A 2026 University of Bordeaux document names ports, wastewater-treatment facilities, and aquaculture areas as deployment settings. The vendor presents molluSCAN-eye as continuous remote monitoring and says its equipment can operate for extended periods without field maintenance. Claims about deployment duration and comparative performance should be understood as company claims unless independently corroborated.

New Atlas reported in 2024 that about 90 systems were in client use worldwide, attributing the figure to company information. That is not an independently audited customer count. Current pricing, service packages, and geographic availability are not established by the cited sources, so organizations considering procurement would need to confirm those details with the vendor.

The company says the technology developed from roughly two decades of fundamental research at the Arcachon Marine Station, associated with CNRS EPOC and the University of Bordeaux. It identifies HFNI valvometry as a technology known since 2006. A 2016 peer-reviewed review discusses HFNI biosensors as a potential tool for marine monitoring and assessment, including research into bivalve life-history traits and responses to toxic substances and contaminants. That scientific context supports the general monitoring approach, not every present-day vendor claim.
