If you have just sent money to a fraudster, contact your bank or payment provider immediately using a number or website you know is genuine. Say clearly that the payment is fraud-related and ask what urgent steps are available to stop, recall or trace it. Then report the crime through the official channel for your location. A report can help authorities coordinate with financial institutions, but it is not itself a freeze order—and neither a bank nor a reporting service can promise that the money will be recovered.

What to do first if you sent money to a scammer

  1. Stop communicating with the suspected fraudster. Do not pay an additional “release,” “tax” or “recovery” fee.
  2. Call your bank or payment provider now. Use the number on your card or statement, or navigate independently to its official website. In the UK, government guidance also identifies 159 as a way to reach your bank. Tell the provider that you believe the payment is fraud-related and ask what immediate action is possible for that payment type. This might include attempting a stop or recall, notifying another institution, or securing your account; availability depends on the provider and payment rail.
  3. Give the provider usable transaction details. Be ready with the time and amount, recipient name and account or payment details, transaction reference, and how you sent the money. Note when you called and keep the case or reference number.
  4. Make an official report for your location. Use the appropriate route in the jurisdiction table below. If you are in immediate danger in the United States, call 911 or local police.
  5. Preserve evidence. Keep messages, emails, phone numbers, receipts, account details and a timeline. Share them with your bank and the authorities; do not publish private account information online.
  6. Verify any follow-up independently. If a caller or message claims to be an investigator or recovery agent and asks you to send money, stop and contact the institution or agency using a trusted number you find yourself.

Who does what—and how a freeze may happen

Your bank or payment provider handles the transaction response

The institution that handled your payment is the first place to ask about actions on that payment. Explain whether you made the transfer because of deception or whether someone accessed your account and made a transaction without your authorization. Those are different circumstances and may be handled differently. Give the provider the recipient details it requests and ask what it can attempt through the relevant payment system. Do not assume it can directly freeze an account held at another bank or service.

A helpline or reporting service records information and routes it

An official reporting service collects reports that can inform intelligence work and investigations. It is not ordinarily a consumer-facing tool for stopping a payment already in progress. In the United States, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) is the central intake for cyber-enabled crime. The FBI advises people to report such crimes to IC3 as soon as possible; it says reports may support recovery efforts in some cases, not that every report produces action.

Law enforcement can coordinate with financial institutions

The FBI’s IC3 Recovery Asset Team (RAT) is an example of this handoff: it streamlines communication between financial institutions and FBI field offices. The FBI’s 2024 IC3 Annual Report describes the Financial Fraud Kill Chain (FFKC) as a partnership between federal law enforcement and financial entities intended to freeze fraudulent funds wired by victims. This illustrates a coordination mechanism, not an automatic service available for every complaint or payment.

The FBI’s Cyber overview says the RAT has assisted in freezing “over a billion dollars” for victims of cybercrime. The page gives no date range, denominator or individual-case probability, so that cumulative figure is not a recovery rate and cannot predict the result of a particular report.

Where to report: United States and United Kingdom

Location Official reporting route in the cited guidance Important qualification
United States Report cyber-enabled fraud to FBI IC3. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) also lists the FTC, a state attorney general and local police as possible contacts. IC3 is an intake and reporting center; filing does not guarantee a freeze, investigation or recovery. For an emergency, the FBI directs people to 911 or local police.
England, Wales and Northern Ireland Report fraud and cybercrime to Report Fraud, which UK government guidance identifies as the national reporting centre. Contact your bank or provider separately and immediately; 159 is another bank contact route named in that guidance. These reporting instructions cover the named UK nations, not every jurisdiction.
Scotland Contact Police Scotland on 101 to report fraud or financial crime, as specified in UK government guidance. Contact your bank or provider separately. Scotland’s reporting route differs from the Report Fraud route given for England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Elsewhere Contact your financial institution through independently verified details and use your country’s official police or cybercrime reporting service. The US and UK routes above are not a complete international directory.

How the payment method affects recovery options

There is no single recovery process for every kind of payment. The UK government’s recovery guidance distinguishes among payment types; its advice is UK-specific, and protections elsewhere may differ.

Payment type or situation What the UK guidance says to do or expect
Bank transfer made to a fraudster Contact the bank immediately, provide the recipient account details and ask it to try to recover the money. The guidance describes an attempt, not a guaranteed return.
Debit card The guidance describes possible chargeback options. Ask the card provider promptly what applies to the transaction.
Credit card The guidance describes possible credit-card protections. Ask the card provider which rules apply to the particular payment.
PayPal The guidance treats PayPal as a distinct payment route. Contact the service through its official channel and ask about the options for the transaction.
Cash, vouchers or wire-service transfer The guidance says recovery can be difficult or unlikely. Contact the service or seller promptly nonetheless and report the fraud.
Transaction you did not make or authorize Tell the provider that the transaction was unauthorized; do not describe it as a transfer you made under deception. The applicable process can differ.

For any payment type, ask the provider what it can do now, what information it needs and how it will update you. No universal freeze deadline or recovery percentage is established in the cited guidance.

If the bank does not handle your claim properly

Follow the provider’s formal complaints process and keep its written responses and your supporting records. In the UK, the government says an unresolved complaint may be referred to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS). The FOS may ask a provider to reimburse or compensate a customer if it failed to follow the applicable rules; a referral does not mean a refund is automatic. Complaint routes, protections and deadlines vary outside the UK, so check the relevant regulator or ombudsman in your jurisdiction.

How to avoid a second loss

  • Use contact details you independently verified—not a phone number supplied by an unexpected caller, a search advertisement, or a social-media account claiming to help.
  • Do not send money to “protect” funds or pay an advance fee to recover them. The CFPB warns that real government agencies and financial institutions do not ask consumers to send money for that purpose.
  • IC3 says it will never directly contact victims for information or money and does not work with non-law-enforcement entities, such as law firms or crypto services, to recover funds.
  • Do not hand over passwords, one-time codes or remote access to someone who contacts you claiming to be from your bank or law enforcement. Call the institution using a trusted number if you are unsure.

What coordinated fraud response means in the UK

UK government guidance describes a system-level effort to bring agencies and banks together against fraud. On 9 March 2026, the government announced an Online Crime Centre intended to bring together government, police, intelligence agencies, banks, mobile networks and technology companies, with operations said to be planned for April. That announcement alone does not establish the centre’s current operating status or mean it can take over an individual bank’s transaction response.
