Currency movements affect Indian IT services companies by changing the rupee value of foreign-currency revenue and costs, altering the value of monetary balances, and influencing hedging and accounting results. A weaker rupee can lift reported rupee revenue and support operating margins when foreign-currency inflows exceed foreign-currency costs, but the effect depends on each company’s currencies, costs, hedges and timing. It is not automatically a sector-wide benefit.
How rupee movements reach company results
Indian IT services companies commonly bill clients in currencies such as U.S. dollars, euros, pounds and Australian dollars, while incurring costs in rupees and foreign currencies. Infosys says substantially all its revenue is generated in foreign currencies and identifies significant expenses in U.S. dollars and rupees. Wipro describes exposures that include revenue, receivables, cash, forecast cash flows, payables and foreign-currency borrowing.
The economic exposure is the net position: currency-linked inflows compared with currency-linked outflows, after considering hedges and when those transactions occur. The dollar–rupee rate is only one part of that picture; other currencies may move differently.

Revenue conversion
When a company earns foreign currency but reports its financial results in rupees, exchange rates change the rupee value of that revenue. If the rupee weakens against the currency received, the same foreign-currency amount converts into more rupees. If the rupee strengthens, it converts into fewer.

Cost conversion and operating margins
Foreign-currency costs are affected by the same conversion. A weaker rupee can raise the rupee cost of payments made in foreign currency, offsetting some or all of the revenue benefit. Costs paid in rupees do not change in foreign-currency terms just because the exchange rate moves, although wages, pricing, utilization, subcontracting and delivery mix can independently change margins.
Infosys states that rupee depreciation against the U.S. dollar or other currencies affects its margins positively, while rupee appreciation affects them negatively. That is the company’s description of its own exposure, not a guarantee for every Indian IT provider or every reporting period. Infosys FY2025 Form 20-F

Reported growth versus constant-currency growth
Reported financial results retain the effect of converting currencies at the rates used for the period. Constant-currency growth is a comparison measure that attempts to hold exchange rates constant, making it easier to assess changes in the underlying business without the same currency translation effect. It does not replace reported revenue or cash flows, and it does not by itself reveal the realized effects of hedges or remeasurement of balances.

For example, TCS’s investor-relations page reports FY2025–26 revenue of $30 billion and constant-currency revenue growth of −2.4% year over year. These are TCS results for that stated fiscal year; the constant-currency figure should not be treated as a rupee-reported result or as a measure of another company’s performance. When reading an earnings release, consider reported and constant-currency growth together. If the two differ, currency conversion is one explanation for the gap; demand, pricing, client mix and other business changes still matter.
Hedges reduce some exposure but do not remove it
Companies can use foreign-exchange forwards and options to offset some forecast receipts, payables or other positions. A hedge may not match the underlying exposure exactly in amount, currency or timing, so the operating transaction and the hedge result can affect different periods or income statement lines.

Infosys describes using forwards and options and cautions that those instruments may not adequately insulate it from currency risk. Its filings also show why headline operating-margin effects are not the whole story: exchange gains or losses on derivatives and translation effects on assets and liabilities can appear in other income or elsewhere in the financial statements. Currency-related accounting effects can differ from the operating conversion of revenue and costs. Infosys’s FY2026 consolidated statements provide an example of the treatment used by that company; accounting presentation should be checked in each provider’s own notes.

- Monetary assets and liabilities: Infosys translates foreign-currency monetary balances at the balance-sheet-date exchange rate. Resulting gains or losses are generally recognized in profit and loss unless deferred in other comprehensive income as qualifying cash-flow hedges.
- Transactions: Revenue, expense and cash-flow transactions are translated at the rate in effect on the transaction date.
- Foreign subsidiaries: Infosys translates subsidiary assets and liabilities using closing rates and revenue, expense and cash-flow items using average rates. Resulting translation differences are included in currency translation reserves.
- Derivatives: Gains or losses on forwards and options may contribute to reported income separately from the operating conversion of client revenue and delivery costs.
These channels explain why a currency move can affect revenue, operating margin, other income, other comprehensive income or equity differently. A headline margin sensitivity does not describe every currency-related effect in the accounts. Infosys annual reports

Infosys reported that each one-percentage-point depreciation or appreciation in the rupee–U.S. dollar rate affected incremental operating margins by approximately 0.43% in FY2025 and FY2024. This is an Infosys-specific sensitivity disclosure for those fiscal years, not a sector-wide rule or a promise about total operating margin, revenue or profit. Infosys Integrated Annual Report 2024–25
The available company information does not establish a comparable current-year quantified sensitivity for TCS, HCLTech and Wipro. Wipro’s filing describes exposure categories, while TCS provides current reporting context; neither fact supplies a directly comparable sensitivity figure. HCLTech’s official annual-report archive lists reports, including FY2025–26, but a listing alone is not a quantified currency sensitivity. How to compare currency effects across companies
For a useful comparison, avoid treating one exchange rate or one sensitivity number as a complete explanation of performance. Read the period-specific disclosures and compare:
- Revenue currencies and the geographies where clients are billed.
- Cost currencies, delivery footprint and locally incurred expenses.
- Reported growth alongside constant-currency growth, using each company’s definition and period.
- What a sensitivity measures—incremental operating margin, total margin, revenue or profit—and the exchange-rate assumption behind it.
- Hedge instruments, coverage, timing and derivative gains or losses.
- Where remeasurement and translation effects appear: profit and loss, other comprehensive income or equity.
- Non-currency factors such as demand, pricing, utilization, wage costs and subcontracting.
These checks help distinguish currency translation from business growth and operating changes without assuming that all Indian IT services companies have the same exposure.
