Lower crude prices can reduce the cost of some paint-making inputs, but a weaker rupee can make imported or foreign-currency-priced materials more expensive. The two effects may partly offset one another; neither predicts earnings on its own. In FY 2025–26, Kansai Nerolac said falling average crude prices and currency depreciation left overall raw-material prices largely stable.
How crude oil and the rupee reach a paint company’s earnings
Paint makers do not earn or lose money directly when the crude-oil price moves. The effect works through the cost of materials used to make and package paint. Crude-linked derivatives are a meaningful part of the raw-material mix, according to a Motilal Oswal Financial Services broker note dated 6 April 2026; that industry-level analysis is not a universal measure of any one company’s costs. Lower crude may ease some input costs
If crude-linked materials become cheaper, a paint maker may eventually pay less for those inputs. The effect depends on which materials it buys, when it buys them, and how quickly supplier prices adjust. A fall in crude does not mean every item in the company’s raw-material basket becomes cheaper at the same time.
A weaker rupee can offset the relief
When the rupee depreciates, imported materials or inputs priced in foreign currencies can cost more in rupees. That can absorb some of the savings from lower crude. The combined change in the full basket—not crude or the exchange rate alone—determines the direction of input costs.

What Kansai Nerolac’s FY 2025–26 disclosure shows
Kansai Nerolac’s FY 2025–26 annual report says: “Although average crude oil prices declined during the year, currency depreciation partially offset the impact. Consequently, overall raw material prices remained largely stable throughout the year.” See the annual report.
This is a concrete example of why lower crude does not automatically translate into lower total input costs or higher profit. It is the company’s account of its own raw-material prices for that year, not a quantified sensitivity that can be applied to every paint maker.

Why input costs do not pass straight through to profit
Even when a company’s material costs change, several steps separate that movement from reported earnings. Procurement timing and supplier terms affect when costs are recognised; inventory bought earlier may reflect older prices. Companies may also adjust selling prices, manage costs elsewhere, or face changes in demand and product mix. These are reasons to read management’s explanation alongside the reported figures rather than infer a crude-price effect from profit alone.
Procurement planning is one part of that picture. Asian Paints describes an integrated raw-material procurement-planning solution intended to optimise procurement cost in its FY 2024–25 management discussion. Read earnings alongside the input-cost commentary
Kansai Nerolac’s FY 2025–26 figures illustrate why a single cost explanation is insufficient. Revenue from operations rose year over year, while operating profit and profit before tax before exceptional items declined:

Why the same market move can affect companies differently
Companies have different product and geographic mixes, sourcing patterns, procurement practices, and pricing decisions. Asian Paints reported decorative and home décor revenue of ₹30,830.4 crore, or 86.8% of its revenue, in FY 2025–26. That business mix is useful context, but it does not establish how much a crude or rupee move changes the company’s costs or earnings. See Asian Paints’ FY 2025–26 report.
A useful company-to-company comparison therefore looks at management’s raw-material commentary, procurement and pricing actions, business mix, and operating-profit trend together. The available company disclosures do not provide a comparable crude/rupee sensitivity percentage for Kansai Nerolac and Asian Paints.

What investors should and should not infer
- Reasonable inference: falling crude can help with some crude-linked inputs, while rupee depreciation can raise the rupee cost of imported or foreign-currency-priced materials.
- Not established by those movements alone: the size or timing of an earnings benefit. That depends on the company’s complete input basket, purchasing and inventory timing, pricing, and other operating factors.
- Do not assume: crude is the only—or necessarily the largest—cost driver for every paint maker, or that every company has the same exposure.
- Look for a company-published sensitivity analysis: without one, avoid assigning a precise rupee or percentage impact to a commodity or exchange-rate move.
