Critical Role’s official pages document guest players in campaign episodes and cast absences from public events, but they do not establish a universal rule for what happens when a player misses a game session. The examples are specific: Campaign 2, Episode 26 features guest Ashly Burch, while the announced 2024 San Diego Comic-Con panel proceeded without Sam Riegel.
What is known about cast absences during a game?
Critical Role is an improvisational, long-form tabletop role-playing show guided by a Game Master, according to its official show overview. That format provides context for the show, but it does not by itself explain how a particular player character is handled when a cast member cannot attend.
The official pages cited here do not state a general production rule for missed sessions. They do not say whether an absent character is written out, controlled by the Game Master, or played by another cast member. An individual episode can show what happened in that story, but it cannot establish a standing policy for all campaigns.

Guest players are part of the show’s documented history. The official listing for Campaign 2, Episode 26, “Found & Lost” identifies Ashly Burch as a guest. The episode description also says the party wakes up to find members missing.

- Package Dimensions: 10 L x 3 H x 6 W (inches)
- Package Weight: 2 pounds
- Country of Origin : China
This is a concrete example of a guest appearing in a campaign episode. The listing does not explain why Burch was invited, how long guests typically appear, or whether her appearance was connected to any cast member’s absence. Those details should not be inferred from the episode page.
What does the 2024 Comic-Con absence show?
Critical Role’s San Diego Comic-Con 2024 event listing announced a panel “sadly minus Sam Riegel.” It listed Laura Bailey, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Matthew Mercer, Liam O’Brien, Marisha Ray, and Travis Willingham as scheduled participants.

- READY TO PAINT - Critical Role Unpainted Miniatures come with highly-detailed figures, primed and ready to paint.
- FANTASTIC DETAIL - These fantastic miniatures include deep cuts for easier painting.
- EXPAND YOUR MINIATURE COLLECTION - Features characters, monsters, and scenery from the world of Critical Role!
- ONLY SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED - Most miniatures come assembled and ready to be painted, some need to be attached to stands, bases or included terrain. Clear and Black bases are now sold separately.
- EASY TO GET STARTED - Critical Role Unpainted Miniatures are highly accessible for any hobbyist, and a great figure to get started with miniature painting or for experienced painters.
That listing supports a narrow conclusion: the announced public panel was to take place without Riegel. It does not give a reason for his absence and says nothing about how his character—or any player character—is handled during a campaign session. Public-event attendance and gameplay attendance are different questions.

Why shouldn’t every campaign be treated the same?
Critical Role’s campaigns have distinct setups. The official Campaign Four introduction identifies Brennan Lee Mulligan as Game Master and says the campaign’s format would be discussed as West Marches. That campaign-specific description is not evidence of a single cast or attendance arrangement across earlier campaigns.

- Critical Role Unpainted Mini Features: Fey Werewolves (2 Units)
The show overview names the original founding cast as Marisha Ray, Taliesin Jaffe, Matthew Mercer, Travis Willingham, Liam O’Brien, Ashley Johnson, Sam Riegel, and Laura Bailey. That history, a guest appearance in one episode, and an announced public panel roster describe different things; none alone defines how every campaign handles a missed session.
