Cricut Print Then Cut combines a home printer with a compatible Cricut cutting machine. Design Space prints your artwork together with black cut-sensor markings (often called registration marks), the machine scans those marks to locate the printed sheet, and its blade cuts the selected outlines.

Reliable results depend on four things: a Print Then Cut-capable machine, printing through Design Space at the intended scale, material with enough optical contrast for the sensor, and calibration when the cut does not match the printed edge.

What Print Then Cut actually does

Print Then Cut is a two-device workflow rather than a printer function built into the Cricut. You create or import artwork in Cricut Design Space, assign it the Print Then Cut operation, and send the job to a printer. Design Space adds a rectangular field of black cut-sensor markings around the printable area. Those marks are not part of your finished sticker or topper; they are reference points for the Cricut’s optical sensor.

After the sheet comes out of the printer, you place it on a machine mat as shown in Design Space. The Cricut moves its sensor over the sheet, detects the markings, calculates the sheet’s position and scale, and then follows the cut paths in the project. It can cut around a photo, sticker artwork, cake topper, label, or another printed shape without requiring you to manually line up the blade.

Cricut® Printable Sticker Paper (8 ct)
  • INCLUDES - 8 sheets 8.5 in x 11 in (21.6 cm x 27.9 cm) in White
  • FEATURES - A thin liner to reduce printer jams.
  • USE WITH - Requires inkjet printer
  • COMPATIBLE WITH - Cricut Explore and Cricut Maker machines, Cricut Joy Xtra, and Cricut Venture

Keep the print-and-cut operation in one Design Space flow. Cricut warns that exporting the project as a PDF and printing it elsewhere can change the size of the sensor markings. A print that looks visually correct can therefore be impossible for the machine to read accurately.

What the registration marks are for

Cricut’s terms are cut sensor markings or cut sensor marks; “registration marks” is the familiar shorthand. The marks give the machine a high-contrast visual reference for three jobs:

  • Finding the edges and orientation of the printed area.
  • Compensating for small differences in how the sheet was fed through the printer and placed on the mat.
  • Mapping the digital cut paths to the physical image so the blade follows the printed outline.

Do not crop, cover, redraw, or move the marks. They are generated for that specific project and page layout. If you print a saved image outside Design Space, the marks may be missing or incorrectly scaled even when the artwork itself appears unchanged.

Which Cricut machines support Print Then Cut?

Cricut’s current general guidance lists Joy Xtra, Explore, Maker, and Venture machines as Print Then Cut capable. The original Cricut Joy is explicitly not capable of Print Then Cut. Names within a family are not enough to establish support: check the exact model shown in your Design Space account and the current Cricut compatibility information before buying printable media.

Machine family or model Print Then Cut status Important qualification
Cricut Joy Xtra Supported Use the material and page-size options offered for your exact machine.
Cricut Explore family Supported Older generations have more restrictive material-contrast guidance.
Cricut Maker family Supported Confirm the exact model and current Design Space settings.
Cricut Venture Supported Supported sizes and loading instructions are machine-specific.
Cricut Joy Not supported It cannot perform the sensor-reading Print Then Cut workflow.

Software and product support can change as new models are released. Treat the list as a starting point, not permission to assume that every product containing “Joy” or “Explore” has identical capabilities.

Printer choice: inkjet versus laser

An inkjet printer is the broadly recommended choice for printable vinyl, printable iron-on, and sticker paper. Cricut’s Printable Sticker Paper instructions specify inkjet use only. Inkjet lays down liquid ink without the fusing heat used by a laser printer.

Cricut Sticker Paper (50 White Sheets, 8.5x11)
  • INCLUDES: 50 sheets of Cricut Printable Sticker Paper, US Letter Size (8.5in x 11in)
  • READY TO PRINT: Works with inkjet printers, & features a thin liner to reduce printer jams
  • COMPATIBLE WITH CRICUT: Compatible with Cricut Explore, Maker & Joy Xtra machines
  • FULL COLOR: Made to simplify your sticker making, Cricut Printable Sticker Paper allows you to make full-color stickers.

Laser printers can be appropriate for ordinary paper, some cardstock, and media manufactured specifically for laser printing. Their heat can warp, melt, or otherwise damage heat-sensitive printable vinyl and iron-on. Using a laser printer on material labeled inkjet-only can damage the material and, according to Cricut’s sticker-paper guidance, may also damage the printer.

Printer Suitable use Risk or check
Inkjet Printable sticker paper, printable vinyl, printable iron-on, and many other inkjet media. Use the media’s inkjet setting and allow ink to dry as directed.
Laser Regular paper, some cardstock, and stock explicitly made for laser printers. Heat is unsuitable for inkjet-only or heat-sensitive media.

Cricut does not specify a single printer make or model. Match the printer to the media label and to the page sizes that Design Space offers for your machine.

Material and surface requirements

The sensor needs a clear contrast between the black marks and the sheet. Cricut’s material guidance says Explore Air 2 and older machines are limited to non-reflective white materials. The newer listed machines can use non-reflective white, lightly colored, and simple patterned materials, but the pattern still must leave the marks easy to see.

Rank #4
Cricut Sticker Paper for Laser Printers (25 White Sheets, 8.5x11)
  • INCLUDES - 25 sheets, 8.5 in x 11 in (21.6 cm x 27.9 cm) in White.
  • MAKE FULL-COLOR PROJECTS - Print, then cut vivid designs for custom laptop stickers, decor, labels, and so much more.
  • EASY TO PEEL & APPLY - Easily remove backing, then apply it to a surface.
  • USE WITH - Black & white and color laser printers.
  • CUT OUT THE GUESSWORK - Your Cricut cutting machine automatically recognizes & precision-cuts the design.

Reflective, metallic, glitter, glossy, embossed, very dark, or busy surfaces can scatter or absorb the sensor’s light. The result may be a failure to detect the marks or a cut that drifts away from the printed edge. Patterned paper is not guaranteed to work, so test an unfamiliar stock before committing to a full project.

Do not treat “glossy” as an automatic failure. Cricut identifies some of its own gold, silver, and holographic printable products as compatible with specified newer machines. That qualification applies to the named product-and-machine combinations; a non-Cricut dark, highly glossy, or holographic material can still prevent reliable scanning.

Material characteristic Typical sensor result Practical action
White, matte, non-reflective Best contrast and the safest starting point. Use this for calibration and first tests.
Light color or simple pattern May work on newer supported machines if marks remain distinct. Test a small sheet before a production run.
Dark or busy pattern Lower contrast can hide the marks. Choose a lighter stock or a machine-supported alternative.
Glossy, metallic, glitter, embossed, or reflective Reflections can confuse the optical sensor. Use a compatible product; do not assume all finishes work.

How to run a Print Then Cut project

  1. Prepare the artwork in Design Space. Import or create the images, add the desired cut lines, and set the operation to Print Then Cut. If several layers should print as one image with one cut around the outside, select those layers and choose Flatten. Flatten converts the visible stack into a single printable layer while preserving the outer contour.
  2. Choose the machine and material. Select the exact connected Cricut model and a printable-material setting that matches the stock. Review the page-size choices in Design Space. The sizes offered for Print Then Cut are machine-specific and may not include every page size your printer can physically feed.
  3. Send the job to the printer from Design Space. Use the print command in the Print Then Cut flow, keep the sensor-mark option enabled, and verify the printer’s scale is not set to “fit,” “shrink,” or another adjustment that changes dimensions. The printed sheet must retain the marks and the project scale.
  4. Inspect the sheet. Confirm that the marks are complete, dark, and unobstructed, and that the ink is dry enough for the material. Reprint if a mark is clipped, streaked, or covered by an object.
  5. Load the mat. Place the sheet on the recommended mat in the orientation shown on screen. Smooth it down without shifting the printed area and use the loading controls prompted by Design Space.
  6. Let the machine scan and cut. The sensor searches for the marks first. Once they are found, the machine maps the design and cuts the paths. Do not pull the mat out between scanning and cutting.
  7. Check the result before a large run. Peel one test piece or use a small duplicate to verify that the blade is following the intended edge and that the chosen material is feeding consistently.

Flatten versus Attach for an outside-edge cut

These commands solve different problems. Flatten tells Design Space to print layered artwork as one visible image and create a single outer contour for Print Then Cut. Attach preserves the positions of separate layers but does not turn them into one printable shape. With Attach, the machine can cut around each individual element. If your goal is one sticker border around a multi-part illustration, use Flatten.

Calibrate when the cut is inaccurate

Cricut machines are pre-calibrated, but calibration can correct a machine that consistently cuts inside, outside, or to one side of the printed edge. Run the guided Print Then Cut calibration in Design Space using the instructions for your exact machine and device; the screens and prompts vary by model and interface.

Cricut’s calibration setup calls for a portrait-oriented print in black ink on white, non-textured copy paper. Use one page per sheet. Do not scale the print, center-align it, or enable edge-to-edge printing. Place the sheet exactly as the on-screen instructions show, let the machine perform its test cuts, and enter the indicated result when prompted. Never resize the calibration page to make it fit a different paper size.

Calibration addresses the relationship between a readable mark and the cut path. It cannot make a reflective or low-contrast material readable; solve a detection problem by changing the stock or print conditions first.

Troubleshooting: identify the type of failure

The machine cannot read the cut-sensor marks

  • Check for glare from glossy, metallic, glitter, or holographic stock. Move to a light, matte, non-reflective material supported by your machine.
  • Confirm that the marks printed completely and are solid black. Faded ink, streaks, clipping, or a smudged surface can prevent detection.
  • Make sure no tape, laminate, artwork, or stray marks cover the sensor area.
  • Verify that you printed through Design Space rather than from an exported PDF, and that the printer did not resize the page.
  • As a troubleshooting suggestion for some glossy or reflective materials, Cricut mentions placing matte transparent tape over the marks. This is not a guarantee or a substitute for compatible stock; test it on a spare sheet first.

The machine reads the marks but cuts off-center

  • Run the guided Print Then Cut calibration and preserve the calibration page’s original scale.
  • Reload the project sheet squarely on the mat in the orientation shown by Design Space.
  • Check printer scaling and page-size selections. A mismatch between the Design Space size and the printer’s actual output changes the relationship between image and cut path.
  • Test on white, matte copy paper or another known-compatible material to separate calibration issues from surface-reflection issues.

The cut follows every layer instead of the outside border

Return to the canvas, select the intended layers, and choose Flatten. Attach is for preserving relative placement, not for converting multiple visible elements into one Print Then Cut contour.

Starter supplies for stickers

Cricut’s starter list for a Print Then Cut sticker project includes:

  • A Print Then Cut-compatible Cricut machine.
  • Cricut Design Space.
  • A Fine-Point Blade and the housing required by the machine.
  • A LightGrip machine mat.
  • Printable Sticker Paper.
  • An inkjet home printer.

Printable vinyl is another option when its packaging lists compatibility with your printer and Cricut model. Replace blades and mats with parts intended for the specific machine, and verify whether a material is inkjet-only before loading it into a laser printer.

A quick decision checklist

  • No scan: investigate material contrast, glare, mark quality, and printer scaling.
  • Scan succeeds but the edge is misplaced: calibrate, then verify page size, scale, and mat placement.
  • Only one outer contour is wanted: use Flatten.
  • A laser printer is available: use it only with media explicitly made for laser printing; choose an inkjet for inkjet-only sticker paper, vinyl, or iron-on.
  • You are choosing a machine: check the exact model’s current Print Then Cut support rather than relying on the family name.
  • You are choosing material: begin with white, matte, non-reflective stock and test anything dark, patterned, glossy, metallic, glittered, or holographic.
