Credit monitoring tracks changes to your credit reports; identity-theft protection is a broader label that may add searches of other data sources, recovery help, and insurance. Neither label guarantees that every kind of identity theft will be detected, and monitoring does not itself stop misuse.
What does each service monitor?
Credit monitoring
Credit monitoring watches credit reports for suspicious changes. Depending on the service, alerts may involve a lender checking your report, a new loan or credit card, a reported late payment, bankruptcy or lawsuit records, a credit-limit change, or changes to personal information. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes these services as keeping an eye on your credit report and notifying you when something suspicious appears: FTC: What To Know About Identity Theft.
Identity monitoring
Identity monitoring may search databases beyond credit reports for new or inaccurate information linked to you. Depending on the service, sources might include address-change requests, court or arrest records, utility or wireless-service orders, payday-loan applications, check-cashing requests, social media, or sites where stolen information is traded. The exact sources vary by service; the phrase “identity-theft protection” alone does not establish what is searched.

Recovery assistance
Some plans offer a counselor or case manager to help after identity theft, including guidance with letters, credit freezes, and records. A service may contact institutions for you only if you formally authorize it. Check whether assistance is included or carries an additional fee.

Identity-theft insurance
Insurance may reimburse eligible out-of-pocket recovery costs, lost wages, or legal fees, subject to policy terms. It generally does not reimburse money stolen by a scammer or other financial loss caused by the theft, according to the FTC. Coverage may also exclude losses covered by homeowners or renters insurance. Review the deductible, exclusions, and covered expenses rather than assuming “insurance” means stolen funds are protected.
What can monitoring miss?
A credit-report alert may not tell you that someone withdrew money from a bank account or used your Social Security number to file a tax return and claim a refund. Identity monitoring may also miss tax, Medicare, Medicaid, welfare, Social Security, or unemployment-benefit fraud. Monitoring is one way to receive signals about possible misuse, not a complete identity-security system.
Check bank statements, bills, and account activity separately. A transaction or benefits issue may need attention even when no monitoring alert arrives.

These free tools address the risk of someone opening a new credit account in your name, but they work differently. A freeze restricts access to your credit report; a fraud alert asks businesses to verify your identity before granting new credit. The FTC says you can have an initial fraud alert while a freeze is in place.
| Tool | What it does | How to place it | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credit freeze | Restricts access to your credit report, which can help block new credit accounts. | Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion separately. | Remains in place until you lift it. |
| Initial fraud alert | Asks businesses to verify your identity before granting new credit. | Contact one of the three nationwide credit bureaus; it must notify the other two. | One year. |
A freeze is not a substitute for monitoring bank accounts or other activity, and a fraud alert is not a restriction on access to your report.

The FTC says credit monitoring commonly has a monthly or annual fee, though it may also be offered through a bank or credit union, card provider, employer benefits program, or insurer. Before paying, check the service terms against these points:
- Scope: Does it monitor credit reports only, or search other databases too? Which data sources are named?
- Bureau coverage: Does it cover one, two, or all three nationwide credit bureaus?
- Detection limits: What kinds of tax, bank-account, benefits, or other fraud are expressly outside its monitoring?
- Response: Are you receiving alerts only, or can recovery professionals help you through the process?
- Insurance: Which recovery expenses are eligible, what deductible and exclusions apply, and are stolen funds excluded?
- Cost and access: What is the recurring price? Are report reviews or credit scores included, or do they cost extra? Is similar help already available through a financial provider, employer, or insurer?
Free credit reports are another way to review your credit, and the FTC advises considering them before paying for monitoring. A paid plan’s value depends on what it actually covers and whether its alerts, assistance, and policy terms meet your needs.
