Counter-Strike 2’s Valve Regional Standings (VRS) determine eligibility and access to direct tournament invitations—not a fixed payout. Organizers use the latest eligible VRS standings to select invitees, subject to roster and event criteria. A higher ranking can create an opportunity to compete for prizes, and in some events can affect the stage a roster enters, but the event’s published rules—not its VRS position—set prize distributions.
What VRS measures—and what it does not
Valve defines the Valve Regional Standings as “the official system for ranking the performance of Rosters published by Valve, which is published monthly and shall be the basis for Direct VRS Invites.” In Valve’s Counter-Strike 2 Tournament Operating Requirements, a roster means five specific athletes. A team organization’s name alone is not the ranked unit.
VRS is therefore an input to tournament access. It is not a schedule of earnings, a guarantee of entry, or a universal measure of how much a team will make. Standings are published monthly, while invitations depend on the tournament’s chosen list, invitation date, eligible rosters, and available slots.

For a VRS-ranked tournament, the organizer specifies which VRS list or lists it will use, how many direct invitations will come from each, and the rank at which invitations begin. The organizer must use the most recent VRS available on the invitation date and issue invitations sequentially down the selected standings. If an invited roster declines or cannot accept, the organizer proceeds to the next eligible roster in that order until the announced slots are filled.

Event materials should identify the VRS publication used for invitations and seeding. The applicable version of Valve’s requirements is the one in force at the tournament’s Additional Information deadline, so a particular event’s own current rules control over a general description of the process.
A rank is not an unconditional ticket
- Roster continuity: At least three athletes from the invited roster must play every match.
- Announced criteria: The roster must meet the tournament’s published regional or demographic eligibility requirements.
- Declined invitations: A roster that has already declined that tournament cannot later accept the same invitation.
- Not enough eligible ranked rosters: Valve’s requirements allow open qualifiers to supplement the field when necessary.
How VRS works for the Counter-Strike 2 Major
Valve’s Major Supplemental Rulebook describes a 32-team format with 16 invitation places in Stage 1, eight in Stage 2, and eight in Stage 3. The stage matters: an invitation can let a roster enter later in the tournament rather than begin in Stage 1.

Major invitations are allocated across regions and stages. Regional results at the preceding Major determine additional places: a region receives one Stage 2 invitation for each of its teams that reached Stage 3, and one Stage 3 invitation for each of its teams that reached the playoffs. The regional VRS lists determine which rosters receive invitations; the global VRS is used for pre-event seeding after invitations are accepted.

| Region | Stage 1 | Stage 2 | Stage 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Europe | 6 | 5 | 5 |
| America | 6 | 2 | 2 |
| Asia | 4 | 1 | 1 |
Major regional assignment is based on the region represented by the majority of a roster’s players. In a tie, the stated priority is Europe, then the Americas, then Asia.
When a Major invitation cannot be used
If a Major invitee declines or its roster is no longer intact, the place passes to the next-highest-ranked eligible roster. If no further roster is available, a last-chance regional qualifier can fill the remaining place.

Does a higher VRS ranking mean more prize money?
No. Valve’s rules do not prescribe a universal prize amount for a given VRS position. A ranking can affect whether a roster receives an invitation and, in a staged event, which stage it enters. That access may create an opportunity to compete for the event’s prizes, but the amount depends on the named tournament’s rules and the roster’s result.
Ranked tournament operators must publish the prize pool and its distribution rules. Compensation tied to final placement must not reward a lower standing more than a higher standing, and equal standings must receive equivalent compensation. The rules also cover other forms of team, roster, or athlete compensation, such as guaranteed appearance payments or revenue shares; those arrangements are event-specific and should not be confused with prize money.

To determine what a roster can earn at a particular event, consult that event’s published prize distribution and compensation terms. VRS alone cannot tell you the payout.
What to check for a specific tournament
- Invitation snapshot: Find the invitation date and the VRS publication the organizer says it used.
- Standings list and starting rank: Check whether invites use a regional or global list, how many places come from each, and where the sequence starts.
- Eligibility: Read the event’s roster continuity and regional or demographic criteria.
- Stage and replacement rules: For a Major, check the stage of each place and how declined or unavailable rosters are replaced.
- Prize and other compensation terms: Use the event’s published distribution, rather than inferring earnings from standings.
Valve maintains event-specific exceptions to its general requirements. For example, its exceptions register includes selected 2026 exceptions allowing ACL X CS2 2026 and XPL 2026 to invite 16 VRS teams rather than the general Tier 1 minimum of 20. That is not a blanket rule for other events: confirm the named tournament’s current rulebook, invitation details, and any applicable exception. Valve’s requirements are the controlling source; FACEIT’s VRS explainer, updated May 27, 2026, offers secondary context on ranked events.
