Researchers at Nanjing Tech University reported a continuous method for making magnetic nano-stirrer bars: electrospin polymer-coated iron oxide fibres, collect them in water, then use ultrasound to break them into short bars. In a laboratory demonstration, the bars mixed a reaction while gold nanowires grown on their surfaces provided catalytic activity. This is a research proof of concept, not evidence that the bars are commercial microfluidic equipment.

How the nano-stirrer bars are made

The 2020 study describes a continuous production route rather than assembling each bar as a separate batch. The team electrospun magnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4) into polymer-coated nanofibres. The fibres were collected in a water bath and exposed to ultrasound, which broke them into short pieces that function as nano-stirrer bars. Chemistry World identifies the demonstrated coating as low-porosity polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and reports the researchers described it as durable in acidic and basic conditions.

The paper says an external magnet is not needed during synthesis. That refers only to making the bars: their use as stirrers is magnetically actuated, so it does not mean they mix without a magnetic field.

How they mix—and what the catalytic demonstration showed

The bars respond to a magnetic field, allowing them to be driven as stirrers in a small volume. This addresses a practical microscale challenge: mixing can become difficult when only a small amount of solution is available. The work demonstrates magnetic stirring at that scale, but the sources provide no quantitative mixing-rate result or head-to-head performance comparison with other mixing methods.

Magnetic Stir Bar Lab Type-B Mixed Size PTFE Magnetic Stirrer
  • Versatile Magnetic Stir Bar Set: This 8-piece PTFE Magnetic Stir Bar set includes 8 different sizes, providing perfect options for various laboratory applications
  • Good Quality Material: Polyethylene tetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) magnetic stir bars are made by sealing permanent magnets in PTFE material can withstand high temperatures
  • Perfect for Laboratory and DIY Use: Ideal for laboratory applications such as chemistry labs, general training, science lab, also a good choice for the home diy handmade project
  • How to Select: Select the stir bar based on the volume; For volumes up to 1000 mL, a 15 mm stir bar is sufficient. For volumes up to 3000 mL, a 30 mm stir bar should be used; Note: Stir bars are suitable for use with liquids of low viscosity. If used with thick, oil-like liquids, the stirring efficiency may be affected
  • Ideal for Flat Bottom Container: This cylindrical with shaft ring shape stir bar set is suitable for use in flat-bottom containers

The researchers also grew gold nanowires on the bars’ surfaces and used the resulting structures in a reduction of 4-nitrophenol while stirring. This demonstrates a possible combination of mixing and catalytic function in one structure. It does not establish broad compatibility with other reactions or microfluidic platforms, nor does it demonstrate industrial deployment.

What “continuous” means—and what it does not prove

Electrospinning followed by ultrasonic breaking is the reported continuous preparation approach. Corresponding author Xueyang Liu told Chemistry World, “The biggest advantage of our method is the large scale,” and described electrospinning as “continuous, very fast and able to make large quantities of nano-stirrer bars.” Those are attributed descriptions of the method, not quantified throughput or yield results: the accessible sources give no safe figure for production rate, synthesis yield, mixing performance, or durability.

Continuous preparation is therefore a feature of the reported process, not proof of commercial-scale manufacturing. The sources do not establish retail availability, validated commercial compatibility, or a measured advantage over particular alternatives.

How this approach fits microscale mixing

Magnetic actuation is one possible way to move a stirrer in a small system. When assessing it against channel-based mixing or other externally driven approaches, the relevant questions include integration complexity, whether the method could disturb tiny droplets, and whether combining mixing with catalytic activity matters for the application. The 2020 report raises these considerations but is not a comparative trial, so it does not support ranking the bars against specific alternatives.
