Sitting out one game does not automatically preserve a quarterback’s season of eligibility. The result depends on the athlete’s NCAA eligibility track, division, enrollment timeline and competition history. In particular, the familiar Division I FBS/FCS rule allowing up to four contests without using a season is not automatically available to every player in 2026-27.

What does sitting out one game mean for a redshirt?

Missing one game during a season is different from sitting out an entire season. Under the legacy season-counting rules, the key question was how many contests the athlete played during the season—not whether the quarterback missed a particular game.

For Division I FBS and FCS, the legacy rule generally allowed an athlete to compete in up to four contests without using a season of competition. That is not a universal rule for every NCAA athlete or every eligibility year, and a game appearance alone does not establish an individual’s remaining eligibility. Which eligibility rules apply in 2026-27?

The NCAA is transitioning to an age-based eligibility model that removes athletic redshirts and seasons of competition for athletes covered by the new system. Under that model, the eligibility period continues when an athlete does not compete; sitting out, transferring or taking time away does not pause it. Academic and other athletics eligibility requirements still apply. NCAA Division I and II eligibility guidance

Continuing athletes and 2026-27 enrollees

For 2026-27, current athletes with eligibility remaining after 2025-26 and students first enrolling full time during 2026-27 may be evaluated under the previous rules or the age-based model, whichever is more favorable. But emergency legislation adopted August 3, 2026 says season-of-competition exceptions—including the football redshirt exception—do not apply during 2026-27 to athletes certified under the previous rules. As a result, a player on that track cannot assume the legacy four-contest allowance applies that season. Prospects enrolling in fall 2027 or later

For Division I prospects who first enroll full time in fall 2027 or later, the age-based model applies. The NCAA says it generally provides up to five years when an athlete enrolls no later than the academic year after the athlete’s 19th birthday and meets the applicable requirements. Five years is not a guarantee for every athlete, and the eligibility period does not stop when the athlete sits out. NCAA announcement on implementation and transition

Legacy redshirt rule versus the age-based model

Question Legacy season-counting track Age-based model
What is tracked? Seasons of competition, with exceptions defined by the applicable rules. An eligibility period; athletic redshirts and seasons of competition are removed.
What does missing a game do? Missing one game alone does not decide the outcome; the applicable season rule and competition record matter. The eligibility period continues when the athlete does not compete.
Four-contest exception Legacy Division I FBS/FCS rules allowed up to four contests without using a season, but the exception is unavailable in 2026-27 to athletes certified under previous rules. Not applicable as an athletic redshirt or season-of-competition exception.
Who is covered? Depends on the athlete’s cohort, division and certification under the previous rules. For Division I, prospects first enrolling full time in fall 2027 or later; 2026-27 transition rules also allow certain athletes to be evaluated under this model.

NCAA eligibility guidance explains the model and transition, while the NCAA legislative text sets out the legacy football exception.

How to check a quarterback’s individual eligibility

A box score cannot establish whether a quarterback has preserved eligibility. The school’s athletics compliance office should confirm the athlete’s certification and remaining eligibility using the full record.

  1. Identify the athlete’s NCAA division and, in Division I football, whether the program is FBS or FCS.
  2. Confirm when the athlete first enrolled full time and whether the athlete is a continuing student or a 2026-27 enrollee.
  3. Ask which system the athlete is certified under: the previous rules or the age-based model.
  4. Review the athlete’s competition record and any documented exception or special eligibility circumstance.
  5. Request confirmation from the school’s athletics compliance office. NCAA guidance describes the framework, not an individual player’s eligibility file.

Why the four-game rule can cause confusion

The NCAA adopted the familiar Division I four-contest change in 2018. Division I Council chair Blake James said at the time, “This change promotes not only fairness for college athletes, but also their health and well-being.” That statement explains the rationale for the 2018 change; it does not describe the 2026-27 transition or establish that the exception is available to a particular athlete.
