In NCAA football, teams do not have to attempt two-point conversions until the third overtime. The first two extra periods give each team a chance to score from the opponent’s 25-yard line; if the game remains tied after the second, teams alternate two-point conversion plays until one finishes an overtime period with more points.
How do the first two overtime periods work?
If regulation ends in a tie, NCAA overtime is played in untimed periods. In each of the first two overtimes, both teams get an opportunity to score from the opponent’s 25-yard line. An overtime period is the pair of teams’ attempts to score from that spot, according to the NCAA football statistical manual.
This is not sudden death: one team’s first attempt does not by itself end the game. The other team gets its opportunity in that period as well. If neither team scores, that still counts as an overtime period.

When do teams have to go for two?
Starting with the third overtime, teams no longer begin with a conventional opportunity from the 25-yard line. Each team instead takes an alternating two-point conversion play. The two-point-only phase began in the 2021 season, according to the NCAA statistical manual.

For example, if Team A converts and Team B fails, Team A wins. If both teams convert, or both fail, they remain tied and continue alternating two-point plays in the next overtime period until the results differ. This is an illustration of the NCAA procedure, not a game result. The NCAA describes the format in its April 16, 2025 rules announcement.
How do overtime timeouts work?
Beginning with the third overtime, each team has one timeout to use for the remainder of the game. The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved this change on April 16, 2025, for the 2025-26 season. Before the change, teams received one timeout for each overtime period.

Are these NFL overtime rules?
No. This explanation covers NCAA college football, not the NFL. The NCAA links its official Football Rule Book and current football rules resources from its football rules page. The NCAA’s 2026 Football Rules Changes publication says its listed changes take effect with the 2026 season and does not list an overtime procedure change.
