Yes. Climate-related melting of land ice and changes in water stored on land redistribute mass toward the oceans, altering Earth’s rotation and making the day slightly longer. The measured effect is tiny—on the order of milliseconds per century—and does not make a day perceptibly longer to people.
How does climate change affect Earth’s rotation?
The key is not heat directly slowing Earth’s spin. It is the movement of water. As warming contributes to the loss of grounded ice and changes in land water storage, some water moves from areas nearer the poles into the oceans at lower latitudes. That redistribution shifts mass farther from Earth’s spin axis.
When mass moves farther from the rotation axis, Earth’s moment of inertia increases. If angular momentum is conserved, the rotation slows slightly—the same basic effect as an ice skater extending their arms to spin more slowly. NASA describes this mass-redistribution mechanism in its 2024 explanation of climate change and Earth’s rotation. The planet is not meaningfully gaining mass; the relevant change is where existing mass is located.
Land ice is different from sea ice
Grounded ice on land, such as glaciers and the Greenland ice sheet, can contribute to this effect when meltwater enters the ocean. Floating sea ice already displaces water, so melting it does not raise sea level in the same way or create the same land-to-ocean mass transfer. NASA’s land-ice and sea-ice explanation outlines the distinction.

How much longer is a day because of climate change?
NASA reports that climate-related movement of ice and groundwater lengthened the day at an estimated rate of about 1.33 milliseconds per century during 2000–2018. The study record gives that estimate as 1.33 ± 0.03 milliseconds per century. For periods in the twentieth century, NASA reports a climate-related rate in the range of 0.3–1.0 milliseconds per century. These are rates of change, not the total number of milliseconds added to a day over all of history.
