A reported test of one Whole Foods make-your-own honey-roasted peanut-butter dispenser found no visible bacterial growth on the plate used to check a swab sample. That is a reassuring result for that sample—not proof that every store’s machine is clean, or that the tested machine was free of every pathogen.
What did the nut butter machine bacteria test find?
Parade reported on October 3, 2026, that the TikTok account @howdirtyis swabbed a Whole Foods dispenser for honey-roasted peanut butter. According to Parade, the account put 1 microliter of sample solution on a nutrient plate and incubated it for 24 hours at 35°C (95°F). The account reported no visible bacterial growth, describing the plate as having “Not a speck of nasty to be seen.” Parade’s report is the source for the test details; the underlying test has not been independently validated here.
The result means no visible growth was reported on that plate under those conditions. It does not establish that the machine was sterile or that all organisms were absent. The report does not establish the exact sampling location, test controls, detection limits, organism-identification methods, or chain of custody.

One swab from one dispenser is a narrow observation. It cannot establish the condition of other Whole Foods machines, or even show that the same machine would produce the same result at another time. Nor does a plate with no visible growth answer whether every possible foodborne pathogen was present or absent.

So, if you are asking “How clean is the Whole Foods nut butter machine?” the most accurate answer is: the reported sample showed no visible bacterial growth, but this was not a comprehensive assessment of the machine or the chain. Parade’s account does not establish a Whole Foods cleaning routine or a company-wide sanitation standard.
Why nut-butter equipment can matter for food safety
Nut butter can present food-safety concerns even when a particular swab test finds nothing. University of Minnesota Extension food safety educator Autumn Stoll explains that pathogens on nut surfaces can spread through the product during blending. Grinding equipment can also introduce cross-contamination. These are general risks, not evidence that the Whole Foods dispenser or the tested product was contaminated.

Nut butter typically does not undergo heat treatment, and University of Minnesota Extension discusses Salmonella and other hazards in nut production. The Extension describes nut butters as having water activity at or below 0.85; that product characteristic is not a finding about this machine or a substitute for sanitation controls. Industrial nut-butter manufacturing uses controls that are not demonstrated by a shopper-facing swab. In an IFT article, consulting food scientist Richard Stier describes validated processing and documented prerequisite programs. He notes that low-moisture nut-butter products can have water activity in the 0.60–0.70 range, and attributes a minimum 4-log reduction of Salmonella for validated nut processing to the Almond Board of California and USDA. Those are manufacturing-context details, not results from the Whole Foods machine test.

Stier warns that wet cleaning can add moisture to low-moisture processing environments, where it may allow Salmonella to establish niches, and writes that “Nut butter processors should not adopt wet cleaning.” This is industrial guidance; it does not establish how Whole Foods cleans its in-store dispensers.
